Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
11th hour entrant Eric Molina took out the pole for the first race of the 2012 TM Lights season. The entire field of 38 was within 1 tenth of a second of the pole. Tyrone Stanley drove the #51 car in this race as Mike Andrews was running the ARLA race in Talladega, which occurred only a few hours before this race started. Andrews will drive the #51 in as many races as his schedule allows. Or, in other words, every other race this season.
I have to admit, but up until the very end, this race was really just a big revolving superspeedway shuffle, meaning, pretty damn boring until the last 3 laps. Interestingly enough, another one of the 11th hour entrants, the #29 car driven by James Davison, appeared to be the car to beat along with the unsponsored EV Racing car driven by Jacob Kard.
Roger Kendall's race was screwed before it began, as he had to pit on the pace lap due to a puncture. He returned to the race three laps down. He ended up finishing last after losing another lap.
Early in the race, Troy Adams had a tire going down and pitted, losing four laps. He was at least able to race with Roger Kendall and both were at the same speed as the leaders.
The first caution came out on lap 33 for Nasu Tsunemochi stalling on-track right as everyone was going to make green flag pit stops. Jim Hayes, notably, went to pit from the outside lane, doorchecking Zach Gott in the process. Hayes pulled away, and then pulled hard into Gott's door again, prompting officials to call him to the hauler after that hilarious display of petulance. Everyone but Tsunemochi stayed on the lead lap.
Tiffany Matthews led on the restart but immediately hit the pitlane with a flat left rear tire. Tough break for the Matthews Motorsports bunch.
Sakura Motoko dropped back through the field and lost the draft. Not sure why.
Lap 68 of 80 saw the second caution, caused by Brian Morris coming into the pitlane, and James Davison cutting him off and spinning the 14 car around. Morris continued on. Behind Morris, Bernhard Strauss slowed to enter the pitlane and was whacked from behind by Archer Harris, sending the 7 car for a harmless spin.
Under that yellow, Zach Gott slammed into the back of... ...Jim Hayes. Could I believe it? No. I honestly couldn't. I believe Roger Kendall also hit the back of Hayes... meaning the 71 and the 2 earned trips to the Stewards' Office as well...
At this point, there are 32 cars on the lead lap. Afzal Tahmid, Nathan Ferguson, and Nasu Tsunemochi are 1 lap down, Tiffany Matthews is down 2, and of course, Adams and Kendall were down 4.
The restart was with less than 10 laps to go, and only Sakura Motoko and Jim Hayes were really off the pace. Meaning, of course, that the lapped cars were fast... and therefore getting in the way a bit. Dermit Scott, Brandon Lareau, Tyrone Stanley, Bernhard Strauss, Thomas Kade, Andrea Kinasa, and James Davison all made legitimate challenges for the win, but Brian Morris took the win by less than a tenth of a second over Mark Blackwell and Axel Andersson. All 38 cars finished the race.
Oh, if anyone thought the Jim Hayes shenanigans were over is in for a shock. Hayes must not have appreciated how Quan Xing had raced him at some point, because I don't know why else Hayes would slam into the back of the 3 car and cause a really big pileup in the process on the cooldown lap. Both the Lynxe Women's Team cars, both of Roderick's cars, and... pretty much anyone who didn't finish in the top 20 minus Motoko, Kendall, Adams, Tahmid, and Matthews got damage due to Jim Hayes being a dumbass.
Penalties will be coming before the next race at Road Atlanta, also a companion event with the TM Master Cup Series. If anyone wants the replay, ask for it.

Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
I can't help but notice the header on the results page says "1 January 2001."
- Spoiler:
- Harris pleased with Top 10 finish, questions Jim Hayes' on-track behavior.
"I gotta say, our Cash America Bolden had a good run today, we managed to snag a Top 10 in the first race, which could do wonders if we can keep our noses clean. But I gotta ask, what the hell was Jim Hayes doing? Wrecking someone on the cooldown lap? That isn't exactly gonna help you in the points, or help your reputation any" Archer Harris stated, after scoring a solid 6th place finish in the round of Las Vegas.

Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
- Spoiler:
- Jefferson 14th in TM Lights Debut
John Jefferson's TM Lights debut was going along swimmingly, he had started 6th and led 4 laps earlier in the race, but he lost a bit of speed when it mattered the most and ended up finishing 14th. While still in the points, Jefferson felt he could have done a bit more with the car he was given.
"We were in good position most of the race. It's just a shame that we couldn't do any better than 14th today" Jefferson said after climbing out of his MRD Motorsports #37 Exide Bolden. "This MRD team gave me a package capable of winning today, and I kinda' blew it. We'll just push on to Road Atlanta, and try for a better finish then" Jefferson added before walking away.

- Spoiler:
- Cummings Disappointed in TM Lights Debut, Upset About Jim Hayes
With the lack of experience on super speedways, rookie driver and North Carolina College student, Joseph Cummings, started last and managed to stay on the lead lap to finish 30th. It was a struggle for Cummings of what to do in the pack and figure out how to get around in the field.
"First off, I'd like to thank this school for giving me this opportunity," Cummings said. "Racing in a pack on a super speedways was a new thing today. It was really difficult for me but there's no doubt I've learned a couple of lessons about racing on a super speedway. Being that it was the first time our team has in such a competitive league, kept my nose clean until the cooldown lap, and managed to stay on the lead lap, I really can't complain about it. We, as a team, hope we can move forward and have a stronger finish the next time we race at a super speedway."
Shortly after the pile-up, Cummings showed some frustration when getting out of the car. He received some cosmetic damage on the car while trying to avoid the wreck. The fact that he was part of the cooldown pile-up made it injury to insult in his debut.
"If someone is wrecking over a small thing, none the less on a cooldown lap, you are making a huge mistake. I know I'm a rookie myself but pulling a move like that is just ridiculous."
The next race will be on a road course, something that the NCC student is new to. He hopes to do his best in getting ready for Road Atlanta for the next race weekend.

Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
- Spoiler:
- Quan Infuriated with Hayes
Quan's race hadn't been very spectacular to say the least, while he finished in the points, he felt he could've done better than his position showed.
"We were fast in the draft, we simply didn't get enough push to move higher up front, and on the last restart..we just faded back a bit from where we restarted."
What he didn't expect, was for the 07 of Jim Hayes to turn down on him in the cooldown lap, triggering a massive wreck.
"I want to know who gave him a License to be here, that was just...stupid. The 07 clearly can't drive and the driver should be fired, plain and simple. That was just....pathetic. [Jim] Hayes proved he was a piece of crap, and he should just stay out."

- Spoiler:
- Davison Happy with 13th place
James Davison was happy with his 13th place finish today despite being put on the entry list of the 2012 season in the closing hours of the deadline. Here's what he had to say after the conclusion of the race: "This team put so much effort into getting me into the series, and this was the result. Hoping for more good results later in the season, but it's early days yet."
Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
(OOC: Any chance the full schedule will get posted? I have a funny feeling that Tiffany might be in the same boat as Mike Andrews as she was in the same ARLA race that Andrews was.)
Anyhoo...
Anyhoo...
- Spoiler:
- Bum tire bums Tiffany Matthews out:
Thirty-two laps into her TM Lights career, Tiffany Matthews seemed to be on top of the world. She was leading the Round of Las Vegas, and things were going swimmingly.
Then her left rear tire went flat, forcing her to pit and lose two laps in the process.
"I just ran over something," she said. "It was probably leftover debris from the Gott-Hayes incident. I'm starting to think my VSCC luck followed me here."
She, like several of her fellow drivers, had harsh words for Hayes' antics, though, unlike most of her follow competitors, she managed to avoid the post-race shenanigans.
"I've never seen such erratic driving in my life," she said. "I don't know what Hayes was thinking. I just hope the stewards come down hard on him, because that kind of behavior doesn't belong in this level of racing. You're one step from the being among the world's best stock car drivers. Act like it."

- Spoiler:
- ]Kinasa starts off 2012 with a top 10
"It feels so good to be competitive again, even though I led only one lap, 7th place is good enough for me.
EDIT: Damn it Ryan you stole my question.

Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
- Spoiler:
- Lareau 16th in Lights debut; displeased with Hayes actions
With only 3 laps to go in the race, Lareau was leading the field. However, it wasn't meant to be as he dropped to 16th by the time he hit the checkered flag. "I feel like that race was in my hands and it just got ripped away."
When he was questioned about Jim Hayes, Lareau stated "I don't know what the hell he was thinking, but that is some of the most moronic driving I've seen in a long time."

- Spoiler:
- Unit 11 Pleased with 2nd by Blackwell
After the running of the season opener at Las Vegas, Mark Blackwell climbed from his cars and said " So Close!" Mark's 2nd place finish is the highest recorded finish for the Unit 11 team since they started in 2010. Although Justins day didn't turn out as well, he was still pleased he got some seat time in front of the field.

Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
- Spoiler:
- Griffin finishes 11th in TM Lights debut
Ryan Griffin's day at Las Vegas was just like an average superspeedway day. The 21 year-old driver was able to get up front and lead four laps before settling for 11th. Afterword, Griffin gave his thoughts on the day.
"The car was great. We showed we could get up front and be competitive. If not for the late race shuffle, we might have gotten a better first. I feel for Ike [Durbin] though. Their car just didn't look that good."
Griffin also offered his thoughts on Jim Haynes incidents.
"Well, someone has been taking driving lessons from Derek Dudding. [laughs]. But, seriously, he needs to get a better handle on these cars 'cause we can't be having wrecks and incidents like he was causing today."
Re: Race 01: TM Lights Round of Las Vegas
- Spoiler:
- Emotional Caldwell: Morris' win is best day in MT Motorsports history
Fred Caldwell gave up being a crew chief to own his own race team in 2004. Middle Tennessee Motorsports started out in the CRL Modified Division. It took them five years to win a race with Kraig Mummert, before Jon Halks got them into Victory Lane three more times, along with a second place finish in points in the 2010-2011 season.
Only recently have MT Motorsports gotten into stock cars full-time.
But it didn't take as long to pay off. Today in the 2012 TM Lights Series season opener at Las Vegas, Brian Morris handed the team its first-ever victory in a stock car race. Morris only led four laps, and survived a late-race spin after contact with James Davison attempting to come into the pit lane, which brought out a caution.
Morris managed to hold off Mark Blackwell for the win.
For the 47-year-old Caldwell, this is one small dream come true.
"Our first stock car win, I can't believe it came so soon," said the emotional Caldwell. "Everybody thought I was crazy to sign Brian, but I knew he could race a stock car, and today he proved it. I just hope he can keep it going."
As for Morris, who will be 33 on March 31, he couldn't believe where his first win in a stock car came at.
"I was a road course guy before I got into stock cars," the Red Deer, Alberta native said. "I damn near won at Philip Island last season, but my first win ended up coming on an oval. This is a great day.
"I was lucky to survive that spin, and I'm shocked I finished first after that. I pulled a spin-and-win. That's pretty cool. I've never done that before."
Morris can't wait to get back to Red Deer.
"Right now, I just want to see my wife, Kara, and our two daughters. Daddy's ready to celebrate with the kids."
As for Caldwell, this is the start of a great year. Lane Cranston finished 9th in MT Motorsports' ARLA Elite Series debut at Daytona earlier in the month.
"This is, without question, the best day in our history. And it's only the beginning of the best year in our history."
(OOC: When I saw the results, I pumped my fists like crazy. In the words of Jenson Button, oh, it feels so good!)

The Earnings use the old points system, so if anyone wants to calculate what they'd be like with the old system... there you go! Just read the Earnings tab!

You can assume they're in thousands, so if you really wanted to you could say the winner earned $90,000
