Per news reports, they were using it as ballast instead of lead, due to it being heavier and allowing them to place the weight in a more ideal manner. It's also much more expensive than lead, thus putting the other teams at a disadvantage.

Right now it's just a rumor, but there may be another rookie running full time next year. BK Racing does not have their lineup set next year, and both drivers are on the hot seat. David Reutimann's performance last year was pretty bad, and I'm sure the team wants to do better than 33rd in points. Travis Kvapil had a better season, scoring five top 20 finishes compared to Reutimann's one. However, Kvapil's ongoing legal troubles could cost him his ride. As a result, BK Racing has decided to bring Alex Bowman to Charlotte to run the open test for the team. Bowman was of course fired from his ride at RAB Racing this year.

Some other news and notes:

Expect Austin Dillon to be confirmed for Richard Childress Racing today. RCR has a press conference scheduled for today at 12:00 PM.

Many crew members from Roush Fenway Racing have left the team. Most of them worked with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for his first season in Cup. Stenhouse's car chief, Pierre Kuettel, as well as his engineer Mike Bugarewicz, and mechanics Brent Wentz and Joey Elliott have all departed from the team.

Darrell Wallace Jr. will stay in the Truck Series next season with Kyle Busch Motorsports, but KBM's general manager is leaving. Rick Ren, who has been with the team since it opened, has left the team due to consolidation. No word on what Ren plans to do.

For those of you that didn't catch the press conference for RCR, they will have no Truck teams next year, but their Truck equipment has been sold to Gallagher Motorsports, owned by Maurice Gallagher and his son Spencer. The team has just now confirmed a driver, which will be Joey Coulter. Coulter run for Kyle Busch's team this past season, but had troubles all season resulting in a 15th place finish in points.

James Buescher has just been confirmed to be leaving Turner Scott Motorsports, the team co-owned by his father-in-law, Steve Turner. Buescher has signed a contract to driver the #99 Toyota for RAB Racing for the full 2014 Nationwide Season. No word on who will replace Buescher, but Turner did say that the team lineup will come soon.

It's really odd that James Buescher is leaving a team that he's been on for so long and is married to his daughter. I wonder what the whole story is behind it.

I'm assuming that he wanted to go to Nationwide but they didn't move him up yet. Makes sense too, the last time he tried a full Nationwide schedule didn't work out so well. In 2010, he tried to go a full season, but made it 10 races before he was fired.

In other news, the Nationwide silly season continues to get interesting, as JD Motorsports has announced that Landon Cassill will join the team full time next year in the #4, which will now be the team's lead car. Mike Wallace, who had driven the team's #01 car for the last few years, will not return. A second car will be run on a part time schedule, with Canadian driver Daryl Harr driving.

To add to this, it's also a massive safety hazard to other drivers if it gets loose and falls out of the car. I think that actually happened to Tony Raines about ten years ago or something, I remember his crew chief got a massive fine and or suspension out of it.

Weights falling from cars are an issue in all motorsport. When I was karting, a team used low strength brackets to hold their weights to make the car lighter. During a race on a particularly rough track (it was either Barberton or Eastlake) the weight came off the kart, which was two places ahead of me and was run over by the kart in front of me. It caused the car in front to spin into a barrier.

Other than that, the only other drivers confirmed are Darrell Wallace Jr., Jeb Burton, and Timothy Peters returning to their respective teams, and Joey Coulter running for a team owned by Maurice Gallagher, which will presumably have an additional truck for Maurice's son Spencer, who has been running ARCA for the last two years.

In a surprising move, Turner Scott Motorsports announced today that Ben Kennedy will replace James Buescher in the #31 next season. Kennedy, the great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., ran in the K&N Series this year, as well as some Truck races. No word on any other changes at the team.

Carl Long forming own Nationwide team: According to a post on his website, Carl Long will operate a Nationwide team in 2014:
"I am putting my own team back on the track in 2014. I This effort will be a combination of people. First is Gregg Mixon and partner, they have purchased two Penske Dodges so far. I have different people who have helped me attain 3 more Penske Dodges. JC Blum owns one car at moment, and plans are being made for him. John Carter, owner of the #37 and #08 cup cars I drove a few years ago, has contributed with parts to help me with Daytona. Chuck Friedel owner of #54 nationwide car I raced at Dover some years ago has made the purchase of Penske Dodges possible. Chuck and his wife Joan have been supporting my racing effort for the last few years. Although limited, we now will be able to put all stuff together. I have a purchase pending of a Toyota team equipment. I have a few drivers that may work through us to on their own car and race under our banner. Otherwise, myself and Matt Carter will do [start and park] to keep payroll while we look for sponsors and develop the team. We will be using Penske engines and looking at different locations for the shop. If a funded driver is available to race, Matt will do the S&P and I will get out of the seat. Hope to give a formal announcement in weeks ahead."(Carl Long)(12-26-2013)

Who do you guys think will drive the #20 next year? Will they go with buschwackers or will they give Drew Herring a chance.

Sportscaster Allen Bestwick will remain with ESPN /ABC after it loses its NASCAR contract and work primarily as play-by-play announcer for the network's broadcasts of IndyCar Series events, The Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com have learned. Bestwick currently serves in the same role for network's NASCAR broadcasts but ESPN/ABC will lose broadcast rights to those races at the conclusion of the 2014 season. NBC and Fox and their respective sports networks will broadcast all NASCAR events beginning in 2015. Bestwick will do both IndyCar and NASCAR events this season for ESPN/ABC, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to The Observer. In 2015, Bestwick will do IndyCar broadcasts and work in other sports, sources said. An ESPN spokesman declined to comment. Bestwick began his NASCAR career in 1986 when he joined Motor Racing Network as a race reporter and eventually became co-lead announcer with Joe Moore and Barney Hall. He moved full-time to TV broadcasting in 2001.

Good to know Allen will still be involved in racing.

Good to see. Bestwick is a good commentator, and thank God that Marty Reid has hung up his helmet, or to be more accurate, his oversized headset microphone.

XXXtreme Motorsport's team owner joined the NTG forums and said that they got 6 Hendrick cars from last season (3 48, 2 88, 1 24), they won't be going to Daytona testing, and will announce everything else in about 2 weeks, including a new sponsor and their driver.

I was really skeptical at first, but I just checked the thread and holy crap, they did. Seems like an odd thing for a team to be doing, but, hey, they're interacting with the fans, so I guess that's a good thing.

And the fate of the hottest Nationwide free agent has been decided.

Hornish to share ride with Kyle Busch for Gibbs: Last November, Sam Hornish promised he wasnt going to settle for any ride just to be able to "say Im a race-car driver." Thanks to Joe Gibbs Racing, Hornish wont have to. Sources tell FOXSports.com that the three-time IndyCar Champ and Indianapolis 500 winner will share seat time with Kyle Busch in the #54 Toyota in the Nationwide Series this season. Hornish could not be reached for comment. Hornish finished second in the Nationwide points standings to Austin Dillon last year in his second full season on the tour driving the No. 12 for Penske Racing. He finished fourth in 2012. However, Penske Racing could not secure sponsorship for Hornish to continue in the ride. Busch ran 26 Nationwide races last season with Adam Stevens as his crew chief. He won 12 of the events in the #54 Monster Toyota. Busch is expected to run a similar schedule in 2014 with Hornish filling the balance.(Fox Sports)(1-5-2014)

Add one more name to the possible rookie list this season. Last month, BK Racing had Alex Bowman run one of their cars in the Charlotte test, and now Ryan Truex is getting a chance to run a Cup car. Bowman and Truex will be running BK Racing's two cars during the Daytona test this week. The team still has not set a driver lineup for 2014. Last year, the team's two drivers Travis Kvapil and David Reutimann finished 31st and 33rd in points, respectively.

Hopefully, Sam can also get some Cup races out of this deal.

Chase Elliott to run full season for JR Motorsports, NAPA Returns: Chase Elliott will compete full time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series for JR Motorsports starting in 2014 and do so with NAPA AUTO PARTS as his full-season primary sponsor. With Elliott as its driver, the 2014 season will mark NAPA's 19th in NASCAR sponsorship. NAPA (National Automotive Parts Association) has more than 6,000 stores nationwide with more than 400,000 quality parts and accessories for automotive and industrial applications - the most extensive inventory in the industry. NAPA headquarters is in Atlanta, Ga., just a short distance from Elliott's hometown of Dawsonville, GA. "NAPA is pleased to continue its long standing involvement in NASCAR, the most popular form of motorsports in the United States supported by its many loyal and passionate fans," commented Dan Askey, President of NAPA. "Equally, we are proud to form this new partnership with JR Motorsports. Kelley Earnhardt Miller, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Rick Hendrick and its many employees have developed one of the premier teams in the Nationwide Series. Chase Elliott is a young and talented, future star in the sport and will represent NAPA well both on and off the track. We welcome Chase and the entire JR Motorsports organization to the NAPA Family." Elliott will carry the #9 on his NAPA Chevy - the same number his father, legendary racer Bill Elliott, carried for much of his storied career that included the 1988 Sprint Cup Series championship. The 2014 season will mark the younger Elliott's Nationwide Series debut. He turned 18 on Nov. 28, becoming eligible for competition. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime," Chase Elliott said. "My family and I are still trying to believe it all. I couldn't ask to be partnered with anyone better than Dale Jr., Kelley and Mr. Hendrick, along with all of the people at their organizations who have put in countless hours to pull this together."(JR Motorsports/NAPA)

Should be fun to watch.

This silly season is getting weird.

The open seats are as follows
#15 - most likely to run a series of one race pay drivers
#20 - no idea with this car or if it's even running. Darrell Wallace Jr. is staying in Trucks, so if the #20 is around I would imagine Drew Herring would be the leading candidate. That said, if they had sponsorship lined up you'd think that Sam Hornish Jr. would be in it.
#23 - Robert Richardson is almost certainly going to run some races. Beyond that who knows.
#24 - paydrivers
#30 - Not sure if Piquet is returning. I've heard both that he is and that he's left. If Piquet does leave the team that could make Miguel Paludo the leading candidate
#31 - Allgaier might run most of the races a la Kyle Larson. This is (I believe) a fully sponsored car.
#52 - paydrivers
#74 - I cannot fathom where this three alarm fire of a team is heading.
There's a long list of people that could fill those seats: Mike Wallace who's out at JD Motorsports and might be retiring, the Brad Sweet/Kasey Kahne duo that could take their Great Clips sponsorship somewhere else, possibly back to Turner Scott in the #30 car, or run the JR Motorsports #88. Nelson Piquet Jr. might be out at Turner and could be returning to Trucks. Timmy Hill's fortunes might be "poynting" back to Nationwide. Jason Bowles is still out there searching for a ride, and if the election year American Majority sponsorship returns he could make a reappearence. Not much has been heard from Tayler Malsam, Ryan Truex, Erik Darnell, or John Blakenship. Bobby Labonte's new job as a Daytona only driver for Phoenix could lead him to something with Turner Scott. Bobby should've turned to Nationwide several years ago in my opinion. Look how successful it's been with Elliott Sadler and until this offseason Sam Hornish.

That's a real shame, a driver of Sam's caliber should be racing at the very least the full nationwide series in top equipment. 7 races is an insult really.

Dave Blaney is reviving the #77 Ford for Sprint Cup team owner Randy Humphrey. It's expected to be a full-time ride for 2014. Blaney also raced a #77 Ford for Jasper Racing in 2002-2003. Veteran crew chief Peter Sospenzo will oversee the operation. "We dealt with each other at Front Row (Motorsports)," Blaney told FOX Sports. "I always liked him, but we never raced together before. Obviously, it helps that we'll have Doug Yates engines and picked up some really nice cars that Casey Mears drove before Germain switched to Chevys. So we're off to. Good start."(FoxSports), Humphrey and Sospenzo ran the #19 Toyota with Mike Bliss doing most of the driving in 2013.(1-8-2014)

Very pleased to see not only that Blaney has a ride but a revamped full time team is in the works.

Dale Jr. to look for a new Crew Chief for the 2015 Season, as his current one Steve Letarte will be leaving his role at the end of the 2014 season to join the NBC Commentary Booth after the Season is over.
