Alta pretty much called this race, apart from what Montoya did, tame race, and an absolutely tame finish. Greg Biffle sucks big time. Good night.

Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
Well, that finish ended rather less spectacular then the other races.
Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
What a crazy and bizarre weekend. But in the end, I think the strongest won regardless of Biffle chickening out at the end.
Congrats Matt Kenseth. You now have joined drivers like Sterling Marlin, Michael Waltrip (like he matters), and Bill Elliot who have one the 500 more than once.

I do that all the time. Sometimes by accident.
Anyways, probably the only we'll see Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Juan Pablo Montoya all trending on Twitter at the same time.

Yup. @AndyLally: Wow.. unreal. THAT may be the hardest thing Biffle has ever done. He rode the brake that entire last lap. That is a commited teammate.

Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
Now that the 500 is over, here is my race rundown, compared to the other races in speedweeks, this race was the calmest, yes I saw Montoya hit a jet dryer. Throughout the race however, it just didn't feel like the Daytona 500 without the intense hype, or maybe the fact it was a night race. However, I think Helton might be considering somthing he learned last night. I am wondering if they will move it back to Presidents Day weekend, and hold it on a Sunday night. This is Nascars biggest race, and it would get a larger viewing audince with it being run in prime time. But this 500 was very strange, it didn't feel right, and the atmosphere was just wrong for the 500.

No.
I'm kind of glad that Junior didn't win it...because I would have been beside myself if my driver won and I didn't get to see it (I had to get up early this morning). With a good points finish though, hopefully he can keep his momentum up through the season; it has been just too hard to be a Junior fan for the last 7 (SEVEN!!!) years. If he can catch just one win this year, I'll be satisfied.

Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
Meh. NASCAR still has a lot of work to do in order to create a entertaining superspeedway package. Yes, the changes have created a bit more pack racing but the two car tango is still very much prevalant. It was really nice to see pack racing make a return but still, I can't help but wonder what could've been if NASCAR could have only stuck to the old car. For example, just look at the show ARCA is putting on. Yeah, you've got your fail drivers there but simply put, the racing is exciting and the sanctioning body realizes the good in sticking to tried and true methods. However, harping on how dreadful the COT is really isn't going to do anything because it's not going to change anything.
As a Ford guy, even I was pissed off to see Biffle holding back at the end. It's the 500 for f***'s sake, grow some balls! As much as you can say about Kenseth pushing Ragan to the win and his accounts of sandbagging, at least he had the nerve to go for the win in the Duels and even I was quite suprised he did that despite considering it was pretty much a "fun" race. He ran a good race and was there at the end, so props to him. As for Biffle on the other hand, it's shameful to be content with second in any race and I haven't forgotten all of the times Kenseth has done the same. But to do so in perhaps the biggest race of the year, the 500, is a disgrace. Son, you just don't roll over and be your teammate's ***** at the 500. If you are satisfied with rolling over and not even attempting to challenge for the win in a race of such magnitude, you deserve to be kicked in the face. Who cares whether Jack gets all pissed because you leave Matt out in the open, grow some balls and race! Had I been in that car, I guarantee you I would have gone for that win. Maybe not with 5 to go, but I'd definitly would have made a move with 2 to go for sure. Screw teammates, it's the DAYTONA 500! COME ON!
As for the jet dryer accident, I lol'd. Perhaps not the best thing to do in that situation but jeez... Thankfully, everyone walked out alright but with a fail of that magnitude, you can't help but laugh. Come on, who the hell hits the freakin' jet dryer out on the track? And if he knew he had a problem, there's no excuse for pushing it in an area of the track where there are safety vehicles on the track.
Rejects of the Race: Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montaco (hit the bullseye for sure) and Danica Patrick (Nice ARCA brakes there...)
Drivers of the Race: Joe Nemechek (hey, he didn't SNP!), Dave Blaney (very strong showing), Regan Smith (had a fine race before the accident)

Well, it doesn't help Biffle's case when Jr. pretty much had Biffle jacked-up for that last lap. If Biffle had gone to the outside, Jr. would've went with him, and he probably would've run the race.
Instead, he rides the brake and lets his teammate win, almost the same thing that happened in the Coke Zero 400 last year, and quite frankly, it's getting a little old.

Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
For sure, this year's Speedweeks was by far the craziest one I'd ever seen in my entire life. I honestly hope all of this that happened throughout speedweeks never happens again because of the amount of fail there was. I'm really kicking myself for staying up late for that finish being that it's boring and I'm feeling tired as hell. The TV coverage was probably the worst I've ever seen. Sadler, Logano, and Stenhouse proved themselves why they shouldn't be in the NSCS. And most importantly, my hatred for Greg Biffle has increased dramatically. I'm glad Montoya and the guy driving the jet dryer is okay. It just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Hopefully, the V8 Supercar season opener coming this weekend will be better and more exciting than the race last night.

I actually disagree with everyone who says this is like the 400 last year. If Kenseth tried to pass David at the end, David and Matt would have been passed period. This time, however, there was no one close enough to Jr. to make Biffle afraid. They had the tantum and the chance. Biffle just didn't take it.
Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
Basically Biffle and Earnhardt waited too long to make their move. Biffle wanted to make a super late pass so Earnhardt couldn't get by.

That's exactly what someone replied to me in the YouTube video of the finish. I was very proud of Dale Jr though for coming 2nd (his same result in the 2010 race), but I am expecting him to visit victory lane in one of the next 35 races this season.
Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
I honestly think Biffle didn't make the move because he was convinced that if he did, Jr would pass him, based on what happened in the qualifier. But it's also completely possible he just wanted to have his teammate win a race.Alpineopossum wrote:Basically Biffle and Earnhardt waited too long to make their move. I think Biffle wanted to wait till the last minute that way he could still have Kenseth end up 2nd but they just wanted to late.

Why? His car broke down, not his fault.
Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
Never got a chance to do this.
DriverS of the race:
-Matt Kenseth (forget Biffle, that 17 car was bad fast)
-Jeff Burton (this guy had how many top 10's last year? yet he was strong all night and ended with a top 5.)
-Dave Blaney (had the lead, if only the track was damaged)
Rejects of the Race:
-Elliott Sadler (Come on Elliott, forget that it was lap 2, you have to know you can't lean on the left rear.)
-Mother Nature (Really, we had to wait till Monday night? I hope Father Time kicks your big behind)
-Joey Logano & Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (I believe this is self explanatory)
-Jet Fuel (Why you catch on fire?)

I still can't get my head over how Montoya managed to crash into the Jet Dryer. I mean WTF??????

Tyre cut, weight shifts to one side of the car, swings out and is nearly uncontrollable.
EDIT: Apparently the suspension broke, again, weight drops to one side of the car...

Oh gosh I hope something like that never happens again, it could've possibly been fatal.
Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
What JPM proved was that you can't get killed in the COT (as if we really needed that kind of proof ._.;
Drivers of the Race: Matt Kenseth (Even without Biffle holding up Jr, he had one of the best cars of the night and was there most of the race), Jeff Burton (a good way to start the year), BK Trash (before the wreck I was impressed they were running up so well)
Rejects of the Race: Elliott Sadler (Proving why he hasn't had a cup ride in a couple years), Ricky Stenhouse (Making me wonder why HE has a cup ride to begin with), Fox's coverage (I expected Danica fapping but not at levels that would make ESPN feel embarassed).

Re: 2012 Daytona 500 (Qualifying , Duels and the Race)
From what I saw, Biffle was in a no-win situation and decided that hanging back was the best bet for the team. Had he pulled out to pass on the backstretch when Jr got the run on him, Kenseth would have been dropped to 3rd in a heartbeat, and then Biffle would be easy pickings for Jr off of turn 4. By killing Jr's momentum on the backstretch, he ensured that at least one Roush car would win the 500, if not himself. Honestly, a pretty good bit of driving, if only because he was able to block so well without wrecking people
As for the race, it wasn't nearly as fail as FOX's coverage. I literally was counting the laps, and found they were repeatedly doing 3 laps of racing and 3 laps of commercials. Then they have 40 minutes uninterrupted of drivers texting during the red flag, and go side-by-side, only for the final cautions. This could by far be one of the worst race broadcasts of the year

This caught my attention:
1. READY FOR PRIME TIME: Who knew that running the Great American Race on a Monday night would garner FOX’s largest audience (36.5 million total viewers) for a Daytona 500? The show also earned the second-largest number of viewers for the event since 2006, when 37 million viewers were recorded to have watched the 500 on NBC. FOX also topped the 18 to 49 adult segment Monday night as well.

It appears that after Montoya's incident, the Jet dryer drivers now have to wear Firesuits and Helmets.
