ZakkTek Motorsports Team Dissolves
The Tuesday before the Round of Georgia, it was announced by Team Principal Zack Kovach that his ZakkTek outfit would be splitting from The Motorsports Team, ending a partnership that has lasted a total of nine races.
"While our partnership was productive and produced good results for the team, our differing business models and means of operation have caused friction and infighting," Kovach said. "I wish the team luck in the future, and hopefully this consolidation of resources on their side will result in a good points finish."
Kovach and ZakkTek take their registered number (23) with them, and the Round of Georgia will be the first race since 2006 that the 23 car is not entered. The Motorsports Team, which has re-branded as Matthews Motorsports Team to recognize minority owner Ryan Matthews and his contributions, will likely run their fourth car, the 00. MMT has already petitioned the series to allow for the points accrued by the 23 car to carry over to their new number.
Both Casey Lester and Carter Fitzgerald took laps in the #00 car during first practice, with Lester bettering Fitzgerald's best time by over a second.
Gibson to do Double Duty
Clay Gibson, winner of the PCC Trucks Round of Garrettsville, announced that he will be pulling double-duty between the PCC Cup and Lites series this weekend at Road Atlanta. Gibson will drive the #28 Wilson Harnesses Zastava in the Lites race, with team owner and lead driver AJ Murphy announcing that he will step aside for the road courses to let ringers drive his car. The Tuesday before the PCC Cup Round of Georgia, it was also announced by Paloma Autosport that Gibson would also be driving the #52 Saar Eagle, replacing the injured Lenny Jacobs for the event. Kyle McWulla will drive the #52 in the following race at Rockingham UK. Wilson Harnesses, who sponsored Gibson in his motorsports endeavors in Australia, will likely sponsor his Cup effort as well. Both races will mark Gibson's debut in the two series.
