And for the 15,000th time...
...the All-Star race's format is changed once again.
Can they seriously just pick one and stick to it? I mean, it's no wonder this race has become a running joke.

This is fucking awful. What's with the draw for 9, 10 or 11 cars to pit at the end of the segment 2???

They just need to take the all star race to a track other than Charlotte. That's all they need to do. Bristol would be a good idea.

Re: And for the 15,000th time...
I see this getting gamed EASY. What's going to stop a driver with a decent lead pitting right before the very end of the second segment, finish outside the top 11, and have fresh tires ahead of the guys that are forced to pit.
This is going to be a fucking joke of an idea.

This format was created by Brad Keselowski, with approval from the Driver's Council, which I actually think is a neat idea.

Honestly, I kinda like this idea. I'll probably ask this question to myself after the All-Star Race, "What do I think of it now?" However, why not change the venue to Bristol or something like that?

Re: And for the 15,000th time...
The idea isn't the problem for me.
The problem is that NASCAR can't make up their damn minds when it comes to keeping a format. I get that change can keep things fresh, and sometimes you do need to change things up to keep something from getting stale (i.e., the schedule, for example), but changing it EVERY SINGLE YEAR is getting a bit ridiculous.

I don't understand all the pissing and moaning over a non-points event.

Maybe because it used to mean something, and a lot of people would like for it to be that way again? (shrug) I mean, is it really that hard to believe? I don't know...

It's a non points event, it never meant anything other than a check to the winner.

All star events are always gimmick driven.

In terms of 'prestige', it used to mean something. But maybe it's just me looking at it from an old school point of view.

The All Star should be held at a track that isn't on the schedule already :/

Still, 15 lap old tires vs. fresh tires?!? Not that huge of a drop off unless you got some tires that'll drop off QUICK.
As for the changing of the formats so often, that doesn't bother me in the least. The reason that the All-Star race has lost its prestige is because NASCAR has lost its prestige. Simple as that.

Re: And for the 15,000th time...
The organization as a whole never really held my attention for a long time. If there is one thing I know about Mike Helton and his group, they're definitely not changing the formats for sake of making racing better, they're doing it for the noob redneck fans who don't know a thing about racing since many are too busy swilling Buds or whatnot, eating half-assed hot dogs that all the sudden gives them diarrhea. To me sadly, NASCAR's become a fad to me. Until they come with something everyone agrees upon, sorry.

... I don't think this race really meant anything after Wallace and Waltrip's crews had a massive pit road fight, to the point where a joke among commentators in the late 80s during CART broadcasts was "Who will Rusty piss off in the All Star this year?". That stopped suddenly in 1991 or 1992.
The race is a waste of fuel, time, and effort. It's been a practice session for the 600 for 20 years, and it's been a real low draw on TV. Exhibition races are best suited to new markets to test if there is a crowd there that would embrace NASCAR. Maybe take last year's Chase guys and anyone else who wants to tag along to a non points race at Portland, or even somewhere in Canada or Mexico?

My idea of the All Star Race:
1: Montreal
2: Standing start
3: 50 laps, can't pit
4: Winner wins.
