Power, Dixon, Newgarden, Sato to incurr grid penalties for Milwaukee
There's additional intrigue lined up for the Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ this weekend as Will Power and Scott Dixon -- 1-2 in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings -- will incur 10-grid spot penalties for unapproved engine changes.
Power, who has won three races this season, takes a 36-point lead over Dixon into the 225-lap race June 16 (1 p.m. ET on ABC) at the Milwaukee Mile. James Hinchcliffe of Andretti Autosport is third (48 points out) and Helio Castroneves is 53 points arrears of his Team Penske teammate.
Dixon's No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car sustained a failure of its Honda engine with a few minutes left in the morning session of a test at the .875-mile Iowa Speedway on June 12. The crew had installed a fresh engine for the test after contact with the Turn 4 SAFER Barrier on Lap 174 of the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway on June 9 damaged that powerplant.
Dixon, who won at Belle Isle two weeks ago, had his first DNF since the race in Toronto in 2010. In eight previous starts at Milwaukee in Champ Car and the IZOD IndyCar Series, he has finished in the top 10 seven times -- including a victory in 2009 from the fourth starting position.
The engine in Power's No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car ceased in the afternoon session. Last year at Milwaukee, Power advanced 13 positions relative to his starting spot to finish fourth. In two other starts on the historic oval (one each in Champ Car and the IZOD IndyCar Series, he has a best finish of 11th in '06 with RuSport).
There's 90 minutes of practice scheduled June 15 at the Milwaukee Mile preceding two-lap cumulative time qualifications (4 p.m. local). Twenty-five cars are entered.
The No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing car of Takuma Sato and the No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car driven by rookie Josef Newgarden also will receive 10-spot grid penalties for unapproved engine changes at Texas.

Barrichello is continuing to impress. So much for having trouble with those ovals.

Meh race. Good win Hunter-Reay. Dario's pretty much done championship wise.

Ex-F1 people tend to do better on ovals like Milwaukee than road courses, oddly enough.
I enjoyed what bit of the race I was able to catch (went out with my family for Father's Day brunch).
Re: Milwaukee Indyfest - Izod indycar series
I enjoyed the race, too. Even though it's Hunter-Reay, it's still nice to see some new faces and teams in victory lane after the Penske/Ganassi domination of the first part of the season.
Re: Milwaukee Indyfest - Izod indycar series
So some side notes:
Dixon's penalty has been officially written as passing during yellow flag conditions. I'm not sure that makes it any less BS, but I certainly don't think so.
Ed Carpenter ran his eighth straight race in the same chassis. His oval chassis was, well, destroyed on Pole Day at Indy, so he's using his road coarse chassis for the ovals, which he's made work so far after Indy was looking like a possible podium until a late spin, followed by a 12th last week at Texas and an eighth this week at Milwaukee.
This race will return next season.

At least IndyCar admits their mistake. NASCAR would have come up with some BS excuse about how it was Dixons fault because he didn't do his homework, and should have accounted for a small 36-second timing glitch.

^This. Brian Barnhart wouldn't have admitted that mistake either. I was really scratching my head on that call. But hey, at least that eliminates another conspiracy theory that IndyCar's biased with the TCG team.

Computer glitches totally means it's their fault....Use your head.flyingturns89 wrote:Bravo IndyCar.

At least they admit the mistake unlike Nascar who would just hide it or blame other people. Remember those speeding penalties at Pocono, I believe they blamed the drivers and the teams for not getting the updated scoring loop sheet or something like that.
