2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Just one week after another fantastic running of the Indianapolis 500, the Verizon IndyCar Series makes it's way this week to the Belle Isle Park Raceway in Detroit, Michigan. Juan Pablo Montoya will be wanting to continue his winning form after taking the brilliant victory in the Indy 500, while two of his teammates, reigning champion Will Power and Helio Castroneves, both won the races here last year and will look to do it again this weekend. Let's hope for some more fantastic racing following up from Indy!
Oh and meanwhile this is Tony Kanaan's paint scheme he will run this weekend:

That car is actually really nice.
And she's not terrible, I'm actually quite fond of a lot of her recent stuff

I was planning on attending Race 1 for the second year in a row, but the track and field state finals for Michigan will be on the same day. I'm a little disappointed; I really enjoyed the event last year, and I'll definitely try to go again the next time that IndyCar is in town!
Considering his results so far this season (and the fact that he finished 2nd in Race 1 here last year), I'm wondering if victory #2 may finally be in store for Rahal this weekend. I'd expect a Ganassi or a Penske car to win them first, but I'd still consider it a possibility.

If I had the money right now to spare, I'd try to go. One year I'm going to. In an unrelated note, I did once meet Roger Penske before. I was 3Rd or 4th grade I believe and my grandfather worked for Detroit Diesel and they had an open house event and he was there.
Downtown Detroit is (keyword here) trying to bring itself back up. But, between the city government corruption and the crime in the outlying areas, doesn't matter what they do. Though, I give Penske credit for trying to bring life back to the city.

DCR going all out with the mid-season driver changes, 6(7) drivers across 2 cars after only 7 race weekends.

All four Penske cars have qualified in the top 5 for Race 1. Will Power and Helio Castroneves will make up the front row (with Power on the pole position), Montoya will start in 3rd, and Pagenaud will start in 5th.
The only non-Penske driver in the top 5 is 4th-place qualifier Takuma Sato. For me, this is a pleasant surprise! I hope that he can do well in the race, as well.

As of right now (2:30 EST), weather reports are calling for thunderstorms to arrive sometime at Belle Isle sometime around 4:00, not long after the scheduled start, and to last well into the evening.
There is also rain predicted for Race 2 tomorrow, but at the moment there are not supposed to be any more thunderstorms.

Race has been called, Carlos Munoz is the winner.
Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Flippi gets 9th after wrecking during the last yellow lol.
Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Alright Carlos Munoz! glad to see him get the W.
Race was a bit smashy but got that green flag run when it mattered. I had fun.

Not the worst race ever, but IndyCar as a whole desperately needs to learn how to use local yellows.

I've been thinking about that for a bit now. There was at least 3 debris cautions that should've been kept at local yellows, because if they did the marshals would take a jiffy to get on track, pick it up, retrieve it no problem. Shame we couldn't get any long green flag runs because of it, that really hampered the race quite a lot to me.
Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Well, this race was a bit caution heavy early on, but it was mostly for debris, so yeah, IndyCar really needs to learn how to local yellow.
But the rain strategy was crazy to say the least, and Carlos Munoz snags his first career win by staying out on dry tires longer than everyone else before stopping for his rain tires, and then lightning forced the end of the race, giving him the win.
Race #1 gets a 7.0/10. Let's see what Race #2 brings.

Turned off the TV when Filippi ended up in the barriers only now to find out the race was stopped and he kept his top 10. Fairly happy about that

I guess you missed the bit where Fillippi and Coletti running 3/4 and Eddie Cheever was drooling in the booth over them

Good race today. Congrats Munoz on the first IndyCar win. And yes. IndyCar needs to learn how to utilize local yellows. Tomorrow should be interesting as well with more rain in the area. I'll give the first race a 6.5/10.

Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Seriously, was Michael Andretti the only person who bothered to actually get out from under his umbrella to see if it was raining?! Literally the ENTIRE FIELD barring Munoz, Pagenaud, and Marco looked like idiots (even though Daly had an excuse, being RHR's front end) because it seemed like race engineers just didn't check to see if it was raining or not outside. It was like they collectively said to themselves; "Right, Taku is pitting, it's clearly bone dry, and it's going to rain in 15 minutes... PIT FOR RAIN TIRES NOW."
At least a Honda won the race sponsored by Chevrolet in Chevrolet's backyard...
Cheever loves the both of them... and all of the Italian drivers (or drivers of Italian descent) in the field that are not named Andretti. I heard he used to be a part of the Italian F1 coverage because apparently he speaks fluent Italian (having lived in Rome for awhile, well...)

Even then, Michael wanted Marco to pit with Power originally.

I did catch Cheever's praise of them And yes, Cheever has been in Italy for some team, his son was born there and started his motorsport career in Italy (through F.Abarth, F.Renault Italia and F3 Italia) and even competes under an Italian racing license.

I knew the moment Luca went to the slicks he'd end up in the wall Connor Daly impressive so far, GP3/2 experience coming in much more handily than Filippi and Coletti's GP2 experience so far.

Jesus Christ come on Karam, quit throwing your brain out the window.
Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Good call by IndyCar to red flag it. GG Vautier.
Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Karam should be parked, cause he ain't learning XD

Karam needs to be kicked out of the series. He's more of a joke than Francesco freaking Dracone. Honestly.

Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
The first half was pretty clean, but once the first caution came out, the second half of the race got real crash happy.
Rejects of the Race go to Vautier and Kimball. Getting into a few of the championship contenders was pretty dumb on their parts.
Great work by Bourdais and Sato, and Rahal getting yet another podium, putting himself right into championship contention, and I can't believe I'm saying that.
Race #2 gets a 6.0/10. Average rating for the weekend: 6.5/10. Not bad, especially since it was a double rain race weekend for Belle Isle.
The bottom might fall out, though, because the next race is at Texas, and we all know how crappy that track is regardless of what series races on it.

No offence but I think you forgot Sage Karam, for taking out Jack Hawksworth twice in the same corner, and what's funny is that Hawksworth finished 7th, while Karam was 12th.PackerMan71 wrote:Rejects of the Race go to Vautier and Kimball. That 2nd half of the race was like a moshpit, people bashing into each other and one guy that's in there to kill people (Sage Karam). First half was good.

I think Vautier deserves to get off the hook for finishing 4th in a Dale Coyne car.

Hmmm, maybe he thought Hawksworth was Sato and was still mad at him for what happened at Indy.
Re: 2015 Chevrolet Indy Duel in Detroit - IndyCar Series
Great race today. Sage Karam is my reject of the race. The fact that he thought Hawksworth was Sato after Indy was funny, but I expected just a good run out of him and I've lost all respect for that guy, and it wasn't just once he spun him. He better stay away from AJ Foyt if he wants to have no broken bones.
Anyways, great job Bourdais. And yes it was smashy. I'll give race 2 a 7.0/10, averaging a 6.5/10.
