Michael Schumacher injured in ski accident
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher has suffered a head injury while skiing in Meribel, France.
The German, 44, who retired from F1 for a second time in 2012, was taken by helicopter to hospital in Moutiers before being moved to Grenoble.
BBC Radio 5 live F1 correspondent James Allen said: "The injury is serious, but not life threatening."

Schumacher is being examined in hospital, with his wife and two children also present.
Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director of the Meribel resort where he suffered his injury, said "he was a little shaken but conscious" after crashing.
Speaking to Radio Monte Carlo Sport, Gernignon-Lecomte added: "He was wearing a helmet and banged [his head] against a rock."
Schumacher was skiing with his 14-year-old son and others in an off-piste area between two marked runs above Meribel when he fell on Sunday morning.
He was attended to by two ski patrollers who requested helicopter evacuation to the nearby valley town of Moutiers, before he was subsequently moved to a bigger facility at Grenoble.

Michael Schumacher was transferred to a hospital in Grenoble following his skiing accident
The German is receiving the attention of Professor Gerard Saillant, a close ally and friend of Schumacher and his former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt.
Saillant is an expert in brain and spine injury. He oversaw Schumacher's medical care when the German broke his leg in the 1999 British GP.
Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said in a statement: "We ask for understanding that we cannot give out continuous information about his health.
"He was wearing a helmet and was not alone. No one else was involved in the fall."
Sources are saying his condition is worsening.
Really hope Schumi will be okay as he was the driver that was tossing down the records when i got into F1. A fantastic driver without a doubt.

Is there a reliable source to say that his status has been moved to critical? I've only found British paper "The Mirror" which is usually piss-poor standard.

I'm already feeling nervous about the outcome. I was never a big fan of Michael, but I pray that a miracle pulls through and he lives on.

Schumi, win this one just like the rest of your battles.

Hopefully he pulls through, but when you hear these stories of ski accidents, they usually don't turn out well

Oh, man, isn't this something? Some twenty-odd years of auto racing and he gets himself into a fix skiing. Life's weird sometimes.
I really hope he comes out of this alright. I've never been particularly partial to him as I driver, but he's definitely one of the all-time greats, and you never want to see something like this happen to anyone.

Yeah, apparently Ferrari used to have media weeks in the Alps. It just seems kind of odd that a man who drove race cars upwards of 200mph on a regular basis for 20 years injures himself in a skiing accident.

Re: Michael Schumacher injured in ski accident
I believe it was a semi-induced coma in which the trauma caused a loss of mobility motivating the medics to anaesthetise him, placing him into his coma before being air lifted to the Grenoble hospital.
I hope Schumi will be perfectly fine, and he's with some of the best medical care in the world. Also helps that he is most likely one of the most physically fit athletes in the world.

I soon as I heard the news, I immediately thought of the actress Natasha Richardson, who died in similar circumstances, but she wasn't wearing a helmet. I hope Schumi pulls through; he's too big of a legend to go out in such a way.

A spokesman for the hospital said: "Michael Schumacher was the victim of very serious trauma. He was very agitated when he arrived and we decided he was in a critical situation and he quickly went into a coma.
"The neurosurgical treatment he received brought us quite a lot of information. We had to operate urgently to release some pressure in his head. Unfortunately, he has some legions within his brain."

Doctors say the next 48 hours determines whether Schumacher survives or not.

Re: Michael Schumacher injured in ski accident
At first, I was thinking Schumi would be okay since he was still conscious after his accident and knew he would get immediate treatment. The fact that it's come down to this has me really worried. I hope Schumi can pull through.

"Neurosurgeon Stephan Chabardes said that a post-operative scan had shown "diffuse haemorrhagic lesions" on both sides of Schumacher's brain."
Link.
That's very not good. In plain english he's bleeding from large areas on both sides of his brain. There is a fairly high chance of him not surviving this

It's from the Daily Mail, so, I'd take it with a grain of salt. That being said, there are, unfortunately, precedents for such a situation.f1fan12 wrote:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/racing/news/20140115/michael-schumacher-injury-coma-may-be-permanent/

On Google News, the only sources confirming this are 2 of the worst media sources in Europe; Daily Star and Daily Mail. The reports comment that 2 German newspapers have also made the comment, but there is yet to be an official statement.
The most recent quote of anyone working within the situation is from brain injury specialist, Dr Richard Greenwood, who only comments that Schumacher will have to adapt to a new lifestyle. Thankfully, posted by The Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/michael-schumacher/10575877/Michael-Schumacher-will-have-to-adjust-to-being-a-very-different-person-brain-injury-specialist-warns.html
