Marcus Gronholm injured at X-Games.

Marcus Gronholm had a big crash in practice for X-Games Rallycross today. Was cut from the car and airlifted to the hospital.

Latest reports say he is awake and alert undergoing tests.

This is the 2nd big crash off the weekend, Toomas Heikennen had a nasty spill yesterday in practice where he suffered a broken ankle

Both of them could of been easily prevented.
1) Why was there nothing in front of the steel ramp in terms of protection? If you missed that jump, it's like driving straight into the back of a semi-trailer.
2) Why was there an exposed concrete barrier within 1 metre of the racing line?

Who the hell designed that?! If you miss the jump it's not going to end well, so they might as well have put lava there a la Mario Kart. Would have been about as smart of an idea.

Do hope he will be ok, especially for a 2-time WRC Champion that was nasty.

The jump looks weird close up. It looks like it goes into a little drainage area.

I think I read that Heikennen needed surgery on something, don't remember what though. I'll try to find the article again. Meanwhile, I think I'd be more scared of the Hot Wheels double loop thing. I guess that went well actually, but it's not something I'd try twice.

Doesn't look like much, but considering he hit the almost unprotected cement wall head-on, I can garuntee it felt much worse than it looks.

That was a terrible idea. No idea what the X Games officials were thinking with that corner. They have the cars line up four wide, and they all go flying in to that tiny little corner all at once. That's dumb.
