Maria de Villota Seriously Injured in Test
This doesn't sound good at all, but it sounds like a mechanical problem (stuck throttle) caused it.
Source
Marussia test driver Maria de Villota has been injured in a crash while testing the team’s car today.
The team were running at Duxford Aerodrome in Cambridgeshire when de Villota’s car apparently struck a stationary vehicle, believed to have been the team’s truck.
De Villota, who was driving the car for the first time, was taken to hospital following the crash. Her injuries have been described as “life-threatening”.
The team issued the following statement: “At approximately 09.15 BST this morning, the Marussia F1 Team’s Test Driver Maria De Villota had an accident in the team’s MR-01 race car at Duxford Airfield where she was testing the car for the first time.
“The accident happened at the end of her first installation run and involved an impact with the team’s support truck.
“Maria has been transferred to hospital. Once her medical condition has been assessed a further statement will be issued.”
Cambridgeshire police confirmed a racing car had been in collision with a lorry at “low speed”.
The BBC’s Chris Mann gave the following account of the crash: “It suddenly accelerated into the big truck that had brought it there.
“There was a sort of board down, like a loading board, and the car went careering into the side of that. Probably on 20 or 30mph at that point – it had been doing obviously 200mph when it was going down the straight at Duxford.”
De Villota, the daughter of former F1 driver Emilio de Villota, joined the team as test driver in March.
This article will be updated.

Hope she will be okay, I even thought at one point that she could be a star for Women drivers in F1. Clearly I don't think that will happen anytime in the future.

Here's another artical on it with audio from a reporter and audio of the accident itself.

Forget racing again, I just hope she pulls through.

Re: Maria de Villota Seriously Injured in Test
From what I've most recently heard, she's either having surgery now, or is about to. It's sounds like it's mostly face and head injuries, but she is awake and alert according to team officials. Apparently the main concern was brought on from the fact that she was motionless for about the first 15 minutes after the wreck.

I won't be surprised if the FIA tries to make any kind of rule changes relating to this issue. It's bizarre how something like this can happen. I'm glad she's awake at the moment. I hope she pulls through.

Unfortunately, Maria lost her right eye in the accident. She remains in critical yet stable condition.

That's pretty much career over for Maria. Real shame, hopefully her condition improves and she can go on to live well

She is no longer in a critical condition, which is better to hear.

I really wish she would become the new talent of Women drivers in F1, looks like that may never happen. Hope she does make a good recovery.

Not at all. Despite Maria's large CV, she really wouldn't ever have been a part of the starting line up of the team. Additionally, they are Marussia now.

Re: Maria de Villota Seriously Injured in Test
Before the source, my post was this:
Why in the hell would they park their truck on the circuit? That's the team's fault for that. If the truck was safely off the track, they never would've had the accident.
After the source:
So she was coming into the pits. Why was she going so fast? Brake failure? Where was the truck anyways; sitting on pit road somewhere?
After finding it on Wikipedia:
Straight line tests? Alright... They still should have had the truck clear from the racing area.

According to the link Nelson posted, she was coming into her pit at about 15-20 mph, which is a pretty slow pit speed, but just as she was about to put it in neutral so the crew could back the car in, the throttle hung and sent her flying into the truck, which was, from what I understand, a reasonably safe distance away.

OK, the throttle hung? Well, any way you look at it, Marussia really needs to make some improvisations with safety...

Re: Maria de Villota Seriously Injured in Test
They're testing at an airport (I believe the one that Top Gear uses) which doesn't have an actual pit garage area, so what they do is they set-up a makeshift garage area, using a marquee tent as a pit which would be right next to their hauler.Casey Lester wrote:OK, the throttle hung? This is what one would look like, on the left is the side of the team truck.
