Sprint Unlimited - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
We're exactly 1 week away from the first events of Daytona Speedweeks, one of which is the Sprint Unlimited! Formerly known as the Busch Clash and the Bud Shootout, this race began in 1979. The inaugural race was a 20 lap dash consisting of 9 cars, which would be won by Buddy Baker. Since then, the format has seen lots of changes. Now, the format is decided on by NASCAR fans on NASCAR.com or on the NASCAR Mobile app. Fans can decide on the format of how long each of the three segments are, the pit stop requirements, if or how many cars are eliminated after the second segment, and what Miss Sprint Cup wears in victory lane (though I really don't know what that has to do with the race itself). The voting concludes at the end of this upcoming Wednesday.
Now, here's the entry list for the Sprint Unlimited, which consists solely of pole winners in 2012 and former Sprint Showdown winners who started at least one race in 2012.
55 Mark Martin (4 poles)
5 Kasey Kahne (4 poles)
48 Jimmie Johnson (4 poles)
16 Greg Biffle (3 poles)
11 Denny Hamlin (3 poles)
22 Joey Logano (2 poles)
43 Aric Almirola (2 poles)
42 Juan Pablo Montoya (2 poles)
24 Jeff Gordon (2 poles)
18 Kyle Busch (2 poles)
99 Carl Edwards (1 pole)
56 Martin Truex Jr. (1 pole)
?? AJ Allmendinger (1 pole)
9 Marcos Ambrose (1 pole)
20 Matt Kenseth (1 pole)
14 Tony Stewart (1 pole)
88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (1 pole)
78 Kurt Busch (former winner)
29 Kevin Harvick (former winner)
?? Bill Elliott (former winner)
32 Terry Labonte (former winner)
?? Ken Schrader (former winner)
How will this all play out? Which of these 22 drivers can earn momentum heading into the Great American Race? We'll see all this on Saturday night...

This is also the first time since 2004 that the series champion will not race in the shootout/unlimited.

The fans can also decide the starting lineup for the race. Voting will open the day of the race. The three options are most wins, which puts Gordon on the pole, 2012 points finish, which puts Johnson on the pole, or the speed of the pole the driver won, which puts Ambrose on the pole.

Re: Sprint Unlimited - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
AJ & Bill Elliott probably won't race. Schrader is unlikely too unless FAS Lane Racing shows up with a second car, but I doubt it.

I would think AJ would be in the #51.

Srsly, Schrader might buy a FAS Lane ride with Federated money

Finch already stated the 51 won't be there. They don't have many cars and can't afford a wreck.
Re: Sprint Unlimited - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
I hope the entire field doesn't get taken out in a big one, it will ruin my night big time.

Indubitably. Option A is clearly the only logical choice.

Option D: Line the field up by age (oldest to youngest); this would put Schrader, Elliott, and Labonte in the Top 3 starting spots.

Official entry list is 19 cars. Only three that did not enter were Allmendinger, Elliott, and Labonte.
Not really surprised about any of them not running. AJ couldn't get a ride, Awesome Bill says he's done Cup racing, and Labonte has only run this race once or twice since going part time.

As i mentioned above Allmendinger is testing same day for a potential Indycar ride, Finch is also not participating in this as they can't afford to wreck equipment up in the shootout and Allmendinger appears to be one of their guys that's running for them anyway.flyingturns89 wrote:Official entry list is 19 cars. I can only hope it won't be a repeat of last years race which was a crashfest.
Re: Sprint Unlimited - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Nice info Zach, Option C is order of poles in terms of when it happened during the season, not the speed, thus putting Edwards on the pole. Hopefully people vote option C anyway since A and B are both Hendrick front rows, with A being the worse option.flyingturns89 wrote:The fans can also decide the starting lineup for the race. Re: Sprint Unlimited - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Fan Vote has determined the Sprint Unlimited format: A few short hours after voting closed, the annual NASCAR Media Day opened. The first announcement of the day: Fans have decided the race format for The Sprint Unlimited, Saturday night's season-opening event. In voting that closed last night at 11:59pm/et, fans voted on the first component the length of the race's three segments to be set at 30 laps, 25 laps and 20 laps. For the first time in the sport's 65-year history, NASCAR and Sprint announced last month that fans would vote to decide several key competition elements in The Sprint Unlimited at Daytona.
The winning combination for the segment lengths received 55% of the votes, while the option for 40 laps, 20 laps and 15 laps finished second with 23%. In last place, the format consisting of 35 laps, 30 laps and 10 laps finished with 22% of the votes.
"By giving the fans the power to decide the length of the three segments in the Sprint Unlimited, we feel there will be an unprecedented buzz surrounding the event," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. "The 30-25-20-lap format the fans voted for will create three distinctly different segments that will keep fans enthralled throughout the race."
Fans still have an opportunity to vote on two other competition elements during Saturday night's race:
1) Fans have until the green flag drops at the start of the race to vote for the type of pit stop each team must make after the 30-lap first segment. The three choices are a required four-tire pit stop, a required two-tire pit stop or no stop at all at the completion of the first segment.
2) Fans also have until the start of the second segment to vote for the number of cars that will be eliminated after the 25-lap second segment. The four choices are none, two, four or six.
Votes for the remaining two categories can be cast on NASCAR's new official mobile app NASCAR Mobile '13 or at NASCAR.com/SprintUnlimited. All votes made through the NASCAR Mobile '13 app will count twice.(NASCAR)(2-13-2013)

That's why this race is too long with such a short field. I'm afraid it might end up being a laughingstock, worse than last year.

I find that camera angle very amusing, it's pretty cool.

As do I. I've always thought the "through the windscreen" camera view hasn't been used enough lately, and I think this should be a cool new way to present it.

Hopefully people vote option C anyway since A and B are both Hendrick front rows, with A being the worse option.flyingturns89 wrote:The fans can also decide the starting lineup for the race. Voting will open the day of the race. The three options are most wins, which puts Gordon on the pole, 2012 points finish, which puts Johnson on the pole, or the speed of the pole the driver won, which puts Ambrose on the pole.
and you got your wish, Option C was chosen

This was the opening graphic I was going to use for the starting-lineup video for this race, but since they let the fans vote on it and let the results out so late it really wasn't possible.
