The in-game paint shop is useless.

GIMP is pretty good for starters, I think.

If you do plan on using GIMP, turn off the following in View menu:

- Turn off Guides (the blue lines)
- Turn off Layer Boundary (the yellow lines)
- Turn off Snap to Grid! That can get very annoying when you place layers where you want them to be.
- Sample Points? Meh. I don't think you need them. Turn that off, too.

I would however recommend attempting to paint in-game first, to get the feel for painting, then move on to say GIMP.

I personally use guides for the logos to ensure they are centered.

I tried GIMP but I wasn't a huge fan of it. I use Paint Shop Pro 8 for assembling cars once I have all the parts and I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 for graphics and details that I can't do in PSP. If you need help with those programs you can send me a PM and I'd be glad to help you out.

When I paint (and that's rare, TBH) I use Paint.NET, and it works fine. I just haven't understood everything yet.
