NASCAR Changes The Lug Nut Rule
So, they decided to listen to Tony Stewart after all.
Yet they decided to keep Tony's fine in place.
And NASCAR wonders why it's considered the joke of the motorsports world.

And that's a start.
Now maybe invest in one big lug for the cars like the open wheel guys do, and then that should totally solve this issue for the most part.

The new rules seem like a fiasco waiting to happen, human error happens especially in pit road.

Nascar should never fined Stewart if they decided now to make a 5 Lug Nut Rule but it was about time Nascar listened to Smoke

Re: NASCAR Changes The Lug Nut Rule
I like the idea of one giant lugnut on the cars like literally every other major racing series.
Until then, I think they shouldn't have changed the lug nut rule, but should have made the penalty for a wheel falling off on its own (barring anything like the whole wheel assembly being ripped off in a huge crash) more severe. Maybe taking away Chase eligibility for the most recent race win or something like that. Something really big.
Teams should be able to take risks, but should pay big penalties for anything really stupid.

Re: NASCAR Changes The Lug Nut Rule
Wasn't the whole reason for the previous rule was to not have to monitor 5 lug nuts and make things more simple? This seems like a pointless thing to bring back. If you take a risk and lose a tire, well that's your fault for being greedy. Like Cynon says, give them a penalty if their wheel pops off because of it.

Re: NASCAR Changes The Lug Nut Rule
The problem is this is a potential safety issue, and unless you define very clearly what is right and wrong, somebody is always going to push the boundaries. Taking away Chase eligibility sounds good in theory, but that happens only if the wheel falls off. If a team fastens 4 all day and nothing falls off, they still gain the advantage, whereas if another team fastens 5 all day but makes a mistake on one wheel on one stop, and the wheel falls off, they still get the penalty. And if there's one thing we should all know about motorsports, it's that there are always people in the garage who are going to exploit and and all possible grey areas.
The best solution, though, is just having one nut, as mentioned before, but, well, since when has NASCAR been in the business of taking the best solution?

Me personally, I like the rule. I would definitely want 5 lug nuts on my tires. I also agree that a stern penalty should take place.
