IndyCar Silly Season Rumors

Post by flyingturns89 on Mon Aug 13, 2012 10:03 am

Making a thread about this because I've heard a few stories.

First off, a few days ago it was announced that Rubens Barrichello is expected to leave KV Racing to go to another team. It's unknown who it is, but teams including Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Bryan Herta Autosport, and Schmidt-Hamilton Motorsports. And speaking of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Bobby Rahal may be working to get his son over to RLL from Ganassi. The elder Rahal, who in the past said he wanted to allow Graham to make a name for himself in racing, says he feels that is currently a good time to bring them together. No word on how either of these stories would effect current Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver Takuma Sato.

Re: IndyCar Silly Season Rumors

Penske (Chevrolet)
2 - Briscoe? Massa?
3 - Castroneves
12 - Power
Briscoe is supposedly in danger of losing his ride. I've heard rumors of Bourdais replacing him, but I'd say that's a long shot. Barrichello? Again, probably not. Rahal? It's either Ganassi or RLL. Some have said that if Massa is out of F1 next year he could head to IndyCar (Miller's Mailbag, August 6)

Panther (Chevrolet)
4 - Hildebrand
?? - ??
Second car is a possibility

KV (Chevrolet)
5 - Viso
8 - Barrichello? Pantano? Guirreri?
11 - Kanaan
Barrichello might leave. KV tested Esteben Guirreri (not sure if I spelled that right) early this year, so he might be a replacement

Dragon (Chevrolet)
6 - Legge
7 - Bourdais?
Legge is trapped in, I mean signed to Dragon Racing for another year. If Bourdais gets a better ride I'd imagine he would leave. I would. I would imagine that most of the desirable free agents (Rahal, Barrichello, possibly Briscoe) would avoid this team.

Ganassi (Honda)
9 - Dixon
10 - Franchitti
38 - Rahal? Pantano?
83 - Kimball
Kimball and Dario are back for sure. And I think Ganassi would be insane if he didn't retain Dixon. So I assume Dixon will return. I would imagine that there is still a chance we will see Rahal return to Ganassi if funding appears.

Foyt (Honda)
14 - Conway? Baguette? Cunningham?
41 - Austin (part time)
Foyt doesn't seem happy with ConMan and Foyt goes through drivers faster than most people go through lightbulbs in their house. They talked to Baguette early in 2012, and Cunningham ran Indy. The former NextBigThing in NASCAR is now TheNextBigThing in IndyCar running the 500 and maybe more races for AJ Foyt. I believe he would be the first African American to race in IndyCar since Willy T. Ribbs in the 1990s. If I'm wrong about that feel free to correct me

Rahal Letterman Racing (Honda)
15 - Sato? Rahal?
30 - Rahal? Jourdain?
Many have said that Rahal will run two cars next year. Not sure if Sato will return. If they can afford the repair bill he will. Graham may join this team I'd he leaves Ganassi

Dale Coyne Racing (Honda)
18 - Wilson
19 - Jakes? Briscoe? Bourdais? Barrichello?
Jakesy might be gone after next year. With the Boy Scouts behind them they no longer need a pay driver (not to mention that the Boy Scouts deal gives them a pretty good paint scheme). So many free agents could end up here.

Ed Carpenter Racing (Chevrolet)
20 - Carpenter
21 - ???
they might have a second part time car. Special Ed returns for another year of being off the pace 90% of the time and being shockingly good 10% of the time. He's a real hit or miss driver, very similar to Kevin Cogan. Except with Cogan, it was hit or hit the end of the pit wall.

Dreyer and Reinbold Racing (Chevrolet)
22 - Servià
?? - ???
Another team that the rumor mill has said might have two cars. I think Servià will return

Andretti Autosport (Chevrolet)
25 - Saavedra?
26 - Andretti
27 - Hinchcliffe
28 - Hunter Reay
Okay, before everybody says 'Saavedra? The guy who failed at Conquest last year at Andretti? Cameron's going nuts'. Well, consider this. The Indy Lights champion gets sponsorship to run in the IndyCar Series. That's the "road to Indy": Star Mazda, F2000, IndyLights, IZOD IndyCar Series. The winner of each rung gets funding to move up. Right now, Saavedra is a leading contender for the Indy Lights championship. He drives for Andretti in that series. He ran the 500 for AFS, which is kind of a Andretti B-Team. Except for last year, when it was a Sam Schmitt B-Team. And Saavedra is running for Andretti / AFS at Sonoma. So I think we'll see him next year. Marco isn't going anywhere. Neither is Hinch, he will return. And from the HUGE amount of people I saw in RHR's hospitality unit at Mid Ohio, his sponsors are happy and RHR will return.

Conquest Racing (Chevrolet)
34 - Beatriz? Jakes? Baguette? Plowman?
These guys might be back...supposedly

Scuderia Coloni (???)
45 - Fillippi?
Scuderia Coloni, a former F1 team said they might race in IndyCar next year, possibly with Luca Fillippi.

Sarah Fisher Racing (Honda)
39 - Clauson?
67 - Newgarden
Newgarden will be back (its official). They said they'll run a second car if they have the money. I think that six or so teams say they'll run a second car if they can afford it. Two or three usually do, but it's hard to predict which ones.

Shank Racing (Honda)
60 - Howard? Allmendinger? Tracy?
MSR skipped 2012 due to a lack of engines. They might make it this year. They want Allmendinger, but he seems sponsor proof. Maybe Drug Mart would want to... Razz Howard and Tracy are also candidates. I thought PT said he was retiring after Las Vegas.

Schmitt / Hamilton (Honda)
77 - Pagenaud
?? - ???
Another team that says they might expand. Pagenaud and HP are likely to return.

HVM (???)
78 - De Silvestro
Not sure if Lotus will be back or not.

Hertz / Agajanian (Honda)
98 - Tagliani
Don't expect changes here

Newman / Haas (???)
02 - ???
there's a chance they might be back. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Some manufactur news...
- Lotus may withdraw entirely at the end of the season
- Porsche was looking into an engine. A guy who I raced against in karts (I usually lost) ran in the German Scirocco cup last year. He went to the Porsche Racing Development Center and they had an engine on the dyno that looked like and IndyCar engine
- Robin Miller said that Randy Berhard was in talks with Alan Mually (Ford CEO). I think it would make sense for Ford. Chevy and Ford have such a long rivalry, that I would imagine Ford would be intersted in IndyCar.

If I made a mistake above, just let me know.

If Massa's out of F1 next year, I wouldn't be surprised if he called it a career, he just doesn't seem to enjoy racing anymore, as opposed to Barrichello who really wanted to stay, even at the cost of having a proper farewell. Also, didn't Lotus already confirm they won't be back in 2013? Or did I just imagine that?

Re: IndyCar Silly Season Rumors

I'm not sure if its official, but I would say its at least an 75-80 percent chance Lotus won't be there next year.

Also, there has been a lot of talk about schedule expansion. Tracks that are apparently under consideration are:

* Circuit of the Americas - Not sure if F1 would like that, because having another big open wheel series there might take away from F1 crowds.
* Cleveland - I REALLY hope this happens. Partially because this was always a good race, and partially because I live ten miles away from this track. Honestly, it would not shock me if it comes back, because recently there has been a lot of new investment in Cleveland. The new Casino, the MedicalMart complex, the new Flats development, a new Lakefront district, major renovations to the art musuem, a much less corrupt county government...So with all the investment coming into the city, the timing is pretty good.
* Michigan Speedway - Would be a good race, but if you also have a race at Belle Isle, I don't think the attendence would be good.
* Phoenix Int'l Raceway - Not sure about this one. This rumor just won't go away...
* Pocono Raceway - Pocono seems to really want it, and I believe they just repaved their track. Back in the old days, the "Triple Crown" was Indianapolis, Pocono, and the Ontario Motor Speedway in the LA area. Now Ontario is gone and Fontana is pretty much its replacement. So all you need is Pocono...
* Kentucky Speedway - knowing the traffic problems there, I'm pretty sure there are still fans from the 2011 IndyCar race there that haven't left the track yet, plus a ton of NASCAR fans.
* Road America - This seems to stand a fairly decent chance of happening. The ALMS is there Labor Day weekend, and that weekend is open for IndyCar. Randy Berhard wants a race there, so we might see Road America on the schedule. ALMS and IndyCar is a good combination, too. They are two of my favorite racing series.
* New Orleans - I believe this would be a street circuit but there is also a permanant road course in New Orleans that could be upgraded relatively easily...Not sure about this one.
* Richmond Int'l Raceway - I thought this track was too small for modern IndyCars. The promoters of the track want open wheel racing back, but I would say this is a longshot.
* Virginia Int'l Raceway - VIR is a pretty cool facility. It closed in the 1970s, but came back from the dead about ten-twelve years ago. The only problem is it can be rather dangerous, because there is a sudden turn at the end of the backstretch that has caused A LOT of accidents. An intersting note is that VIR has a hotel on site, which should prevent huge lines going into the track in the morning.
* Palm Springs - A group of investors wants to build a road course to snag an IndyCar race. I don't think this is a possibility for next year, because I doubt they can finish the course in time.
* Vancouver - This would be a revival of the street circuit that was there in the 1990s and early 2000s. I don't know which version of the street circuit they would use.
* Calgary - The race at Calgary would probably be at Stampede City. I honestly don't know what that is.
* Quebec City - A street race to replace Edmonton. The airport that the Edmonton race is at is going to close in the next few years as the town's other airport is expanding. Some have said that the current Edmonton track could just be turned into either a Permanant track or a street circuit. If that happens, I don't think we will see a new Canadian race.
* Chicagoland Speedway - see Chicago street course
* Chicago Street Course - There have been a number of proposals. One each at the Chicagoland Speedway and the Street Course. Another that has been thrown out there is that they could have a race on Saturday at the street course. Then, there would be a race on the oval course on Sunday, and the finishing order for the previous race on the street course would form the grid.
* Ft. Lauderdale - There seems to be a promoter willing to do this, and it almost happened this year. I think there's a strong chance that this will happen.
* Sepang Int'l Circuit - I'm not sure what this one is all about. Sepang is a cool track for sure, but I don't think that Sepang can sustain two top flyte open wheel weekends in one year
* Marina Bay - aka Singapore. From what I understand, if F1 doesn't come back to Singapore, the promoters of the race will try to get an IndyCar race so that the Singapore GP can still be held, but for a different series
* Sentul - Sentul is a track in Indonesia that was used for an A1 GP race a few years back. I don't know much about it. But there are many, many road courses that are more worthy in Asia such as Shanghai, the aforementioned Sepang, Suzuka, and the Fuji International Speedway.
* Losail - This is the MotoGP track in Qatar. It's an intersting possibility, but I don't see it happening.
* Surfers Paradise - This one makes a lot of sense to me. You have Australian drivers doing well in IndyCar: Will Power is a championship contender, and you also have Ryan Briscoe, who while in a slump at the moment has shown signs of brilliance. But I'm going to hand this one off to our Australian friends at EFR. Is IndyCar big enough in Australia to support a race again? I would love to see it happen, because that was a cool track. Most of the drivers seemed to like it. url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfOzkQQx4Ok]Well, maybe not Tora Takagi[/url], but Parker Johnstone could explain why his opinion is invalid.
* Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez - I doubt this will happen.
* "Former F1 Venues in Europe" - Zolder, Imola, Zandvoort, Magny Cours, Jerez, Jarama, Red Bull Ring, Anderstorp, Brands Hatch, Donnington, Dijon...

I would like to see Bourdais get the Penske ride, see if he still has it in a good ride for American open weel racing.

As for tracks, at the very least, bring back Surfer's Paradise. That seemed to usually have good races, and it just seems odd to this day not having any major open wheel racing there

I feel like Indy car doesn't do enough here in Canada for marketing. Its weird having to explain to people who watch sports a lot about Indy racing. They dont just seem to understand it. I barely saw adds for the Toronto race I attended and I live within a hour of there. Races in Quebec and British Columbia would be great. On a side note. The race in Toronto was attended pretty nicely it seems. even on Saturday. And you could sure hear the Hinchcliffe Hoorays and cheers during the race. That race will stay as long as a Canadian is racing.

Surfers Paradise is now a marquee event on the V8 Supercars Calendar, doubt V8's would want to give it back to Indycar, would like to see Indycar come to Eastern Creek though, A1 was okay there, and I wouldn't mind having Indycars 15 minutes from my house.

They shortened the Surfers Paradise track by about 1 & a half kilometres, so I doubt they'll go back there. These are tracks I would like to see them at:
Adelaide Street Circuit
Homebush Street Circuit
Bathurst (I don't think it will happen though, because of the high speeds down conrod & the narrow parts on top of the mountain.)
There probably aren't enough indycar fans here in Australia to host another event though.

Didn't they just make some big layout changes to Eastern Creek?

They added an extra section to the track, and change a corner, V8's will still be using the original layout when they go there in two weeks.

^Original layout

^New layout.

They only shortened it for the international V8 Supercars drivers, to make it a little easy. They will extend the track again for Indycar if it ever came back.

As for Eastern Creek I would have changed the short circuit link. Having driven it in ToCA Race Driver 3, it was VERY abrupt.

They've changed that part as well, my Dad drove on it in a V8 Supercar last November and said it was fantastic to drive on.

I'm doing that at another track in October.

The whole Graham Rahal situation makes no sense. Ganassi wanted him back, and yet he leaves the team with zero chance of driving for a top caliber team and is looking at (possibly) a part time schedule. Huh? And if he does manage to get a ride, it will be with the back marker RLL team. I mean Sato has had a few strong runs with the team but not many.

I don't think he is officially left yet, I think they just haven't signed the deal yet so he can look at other teams. Oh, and I wouldn't call a team and driver that have had two podiums and almost won the Indy 500 a backmarker team. Neutral

Except Penske and Andretti. And while KV and Panther aren't as good as them, there not back marker teams.

Team Chart Update Time

*Apparently Rahal and Penske want to get Hunter Reay.
*Graham Rahal is looking for a ride. Hopefully RLL will find the cash to field a car for him.
*Barrichello might leave KV for another team, supposedly a second car from Schmitt / Hamilton
* EJ Viso is thinking about starting his own team.

Team Penske (Chevrolet)
2 - Ryan Briscoe or AJ Almendinger or Justin Wilson - IZOD / PPG / Hitachi
3 - Helio Castroneves - Shell / Pennzoil / Penske / AAA
12 - Will Power - Verizon Wireless
If Roger can't get RHR he'll probably keep Briscoe. Penske couldn't get Hunter Reay but he said that AJ Allmendinger is an option. Justin Wilson may be in the mix as well.

Panther / Dreyer & Reinbold Racing (Chevrolet)
4 - JR Hildebrand - National Guard
22 - Oriol Servia - WIX Filters / Charter Bank
No expected changes. A third car is possible, but unlikely

KV Racing Technology (Chevrolet)
5 - EJ Viso? - Citgo?
8 - Simona de Silvestro - Entergy Nuclear
11 - Tony Kanaan - Geico / Mouser
EJ Viso might start his own team as a KV satellite. Barrichello might leave. The team tested Esteveem Guirreri... There might be an ownership change (9/22) and only Kanaan's car is forsure returning. Simona de Silvestro is joining the team. EJ Viso may or may not be back.

Dragon Racing (Chevrolet)
6 - Katherine Legge - True Car / Virgin
7 - Sebastien Bourdais - True Car / McAfee / Bing
Both Legge and Bourdais are signed for next year.

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Stabatas (Honda)
9 - Scott Dixon - Target
10 - Dario Franchitti - Target
38 - Ryan Briscoe??? Giorgio Pantano??? - NTB or Target
83 - Charlie Kimball - Novo Nordisk
Graham Rahal is gone. Not sure if Chipster (whose real name is Floyd Ganassi BTW) will run the #38 or if NTB will go with Rahal. They historically have been attached to Graham Rahal, but they would probably get better value sticking with Ganassi as opposed to following Rahal to a lower team. It seems like NTB is going with Rahal. Ryan Briscoe is a leading candidate for the 38 if he doesn't return to Penske.

AJ Foyt Enterprises (Honda)
14 - AJ Almendinger? Wade Cunningham? Bertrand Baguette? - ABC Supply Company
41 - Chase Austin - ABC Supply Co. (Part Time)
AJ Foyt doesn't seem happy with Conman. AJ Allmendinger was said to be in contention for a seat here. Chase Austin will run at least the 500 and maybe a few other races. Conway is gone and Cunningham and Allmendinger are in contention along with a small army of others.

Rahal / Letterman Racing (Honda)
15 - Takuma Sato or ??? - MiJack / Panasonic
30 - Graham Rahal - NTB? Quick Slim?
45 - Michel Jourdain? - Office Depot (Part Time)?
I hope Rahal gets a full time ride here, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. This is really his only hope, which in unfortunate, because Graham Rahal has a ton of potential. If this team lands Ryan Hunter Reay I will be shocked. More than shocked. It won't happen. Sato isn't confirmed but he brings sponsorship. This team is Graham Rahal's only option for 2013, hopefully it will be full time. Sato may be leaving

Andretti Autosport (Chevrolet)
17 - Sebastian Saavedra - Automatic Fire Sprinklers (Part Time)
25 - Carlos Munez - Buffalo Wild Wings / Dr. Pepper (Part Time)
26 - Marco Andretti - RC / Dr. Pepper
27 - James Hinchcliffe - Go Daddy
28 - Ryan Hunter Reay - Sun Drop / DHL
Hunter Reay isn't necessarily staying here, but if I were in his place I would. Saavedra might be full time if he wins the Indy Lights title (he didn't) [9/22]. Carlos Munez has been confirmed for a run in the 500. Hunter Reay may or may not use the #1

Dale Coyne Racing (Honda)
18 - Justin Wilson? - Sonny's Real Pit BBQ
19 - James Jakes - Boy Scouts of America
Sounds like both of these guys will be back. I may be the only one saying this, but Jaksey is getting a lot better, but he still has a ways to go. Justin Wilson is expected to return unless Penske calls.

Ed Carpenter Racing (Chevrolet)
20 - Ed Carpenter - Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka
21 - Buddy Rice or Bryan Clauson - ???
Ed Carpenter returns. He is thinking about fielding a second part time car for another driver. Special Ed can't seem to get it done at all this season. Carpenter might team up with HVM. [9/22]

EJ Viso Motorsports (Chevrolet)
32 - EJ Viso - Citgo / PDVSA
Viso wants to start his own team as a KV satelitte.

Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing (Honda)
67 - Josef Newgarden - Dollar General / Angie's List / Direct Supply
Newgarden is already signed for next year.

Schmitt / Hamilton Motorsports (Honda)
77 - Simon Pagenaud - Hewlett Packard
88 - Esteben Guirrerri? - Vortix?
99 - Rubens Barrichello or Tristian Vaultier - Lucas Oil or Copart or BMC
Pagenaud and HP are signed for next year. Team might expand. Barrichello might come here. Vaultier won the Indy Lights title so he has Road to Indy scholarship. Guirreri seems like he is heading toward SSM, and he has a sponsor in Vortix.com

HVM Racing (Chevrolet or Lotus or Honda)
78 - ??? - ???
Sounds like Lotus will be out for next year. HVM lost Simona and Entergy

Scuderia Coloni (Chevrolet or Honda)
45 - Luca Fillippi or ??? - Ray Braun / Hisset
GP2 team and former F1 team said they might head to Indy in 2013.

Bryan Herta / Agajanian Autosport (Honda)
98 - Alex Tagliani - Barracuda / William Rast
Tags will supposedly return

Newman / Haas Racing (Honda or Chevrolet)
02 - ??? - ???
If they can find the sponsorship they say they will be  back.

Definatly Full Time:
Ganassi #9
Ganassi #10
Ganassi #83
Penske #3
Penske #12
Andretti #26
Andretti #27
Andretti #28
Foyt #14
Rahal #15
Panther #4
Dreyer & Reinbold #22
Schmitt / Hamilton #77
Dragon #6
Dragon #7
KV #11
KV #8
Coyne #18
Coyne #19
Carpenter #20
Fisher #67
Herta / Agajanian #98
KV #5

Possible Entries
Ganassi #38
Penske #2"
Rahal #30
Coloni #45
Newman Haas #02
Viso #32
Andretti AFS #17
Schmitt Hamilton #99

Also there is the Indy 500 one offs
41 - Chase Austin - AJ Foyt Enterprises
25 - Carlos Munoz - Andretti Autosport
17 - Sebastian Saavedra - AFS/Andretti Autosport
29 - Danica Patrick - Andretti Autosport
66 - Alex Zanardi - KV Ganassi Partnership
99 - Townsend Bell - Schmitt Hamilton Motorsports
45 - Michel Jourdain - Rahal Letterman Racing

RLL Racing isn't being very smart right now. Talking to 4-5 drivers when you have only 1 car isn't a great idea. Germain tried that with their Truck program, and look how that ended up.

There was an article on speed about how apparently AJ Allmendinger, who recently completed rehab and has been reinstated by NASCAR, is under consideration for the #2 Penske car.

Ryan Hunter Reay has resigned with Andretti Autosport. He hasn't said whether he will use the #1 or not.

The rumor is that Service Central is pulling out of racing for 2013. So therefore Graham Rahal's career is over. Sad.

Cleveland might be a viable option for 2013, but I would say there's a decent chance it could return in 2014.

Some News
- Esteban Guerrieri is likely to go to Schmitt with sponsorship from Vorterix (whatever the heck that is)
- Service Central may not be gone after all and we might see Graham Rahal in IndyCar, most likely with Rahal Letterman

So my guess would be as follow

Penske: Briscoe or Wilson or Allmendinger, Castroneves, Power
Panther / DRR: Hildebrand, Servià
KV: Viso, Vaultier???, Kanaan
Dragon: Legge, Bourdais
Ganassi: Dixon, Franchitti, Pantano or Briscoe, Kimball
Foyt: Cunningham or Allmendinger, Austin (PT)
Rahal Letterman: Sato or Briscoe or Barrichello, Rahal
Coyne: Wilson or Sato, Jakes
Carpenter: Carpenter
Andretti: Andretti, Hinchcliffe, Hunter Reay, Saavedra (PT)
Conquest: Beatriz (PT?)
Fisher: Newgarden
Schmitt: Pagenaud, Guerrieri
HVM: de Silvestro
Herta Agajanian: Tagliani
Newman Haas: Martinez (PT?)
Coloni: Pantano or Fillippi (PT?)

Re: IndyCar Silly Season Rumors

So this is the end of this thread now. The chances of there being a 2013 IndyCar Season aren't good. So this thread is speculating on a season that in all likelihood will never occur. It is a sad moment. The Dario Franchittis, Ryan Hunter Reays, and Hélio Castroneves of the world have enough cash. The Bourdais, Legges, Serviàs, and Barrichellos will race somewhere. But the really sad part is crewmens, the aerodynamicists, the team accountants that have are looking at a dim future.

So unless a miracle happens the final statistics are as follows. AJ Foyt has the most race wins. Sébastien Bourdais has the most consectutive championships. Dare Franchitti is the final winner of the Indianapolis 500. Ryan Hunter Reay is the final champion. And most depressing, Ed freaking Carpenter is the final race winner.

RIP IndyCar
I hope I am wrong.
