Conrails New Toy
On Monday I went ahead and bought a Conrail 19_ _ Leslie Supertyfon RS3L. Yes this is my first train horn I have ever owned and its also my favorite type. It takes 80 psi to speak but to make its legendary sound, it only needs around 130 psi. Ive added some photos and a video below of what it looks and sounds like. In the photos Ive added a 1:24 scale car to show a size comparison.

Put that on your car, go up to a railroad crossing and have a horn duel with a train. Bet he won't see this coming. Nice pickup

The whole railroad community feels that way, since the split in 99 only 27 units still remain in CR paint. We project they all be repainted by May.navycook75 wrote:I havn't seen a Conrail train in years......
So the initial air test went alright. The idiot I was with didnt get all the water out of the air line before we tested itm but it s loud!. Today im taking the reverse chambers off and inspect more for rust, grime, bad O rings etc. Then we plan on taking it to the valley to do an echo test. That should be interesting.

Whatever happened to Conrail by chance? Used to see them all the time. I live in Norfolk, specifically near Wards Corner and it's a real busy crossing for NS trains going to the shipyard. 99.9% of the time its NS but I believe a few months ago, I saw a Conrail engine in action.
I should really go and get some pictures because there's constantly a train coming through about every hour or so. Maybe I'll see a Conrail again. Every once in a blue moon, it'll pop up and I've seen it more than once. Is it me or are the NS horns just really boring? I can remember the difference in sound when the Conrail came around.
Also, my family live out in Buckingham County and there's an old Buckingham Branch Railroad on display there at the station. I should get around to taking my camera out there because the BB comes around.

Re: Conrails New Toy
By 1997, Conrail basically dominated the East Coast Railroad market. So much so that in 1998 NS and CSX made plans to buy out Conrail and split the ownership & property. The buyout was approved and Conrail became the most recent Class 1 Fallen Flag. Last summer CSX finished repainting all of the Conrail units they aquired in the buyout and NS is looking to finish repainting theyre remaining Conrail units by Summer of this year.pepsibottle1 wrote:Whatever happened to Conrail by chance? As for the boring NS horns. Conrail and other railroad in the 80's were using mainly Leslie air horns like this one. Most railroads now are switching over to Nathan Airchime products. Mainly because its easier on the train crews ears and horns and there replacement parts are still being made.
Ive always wanted to come down and see the Buckingham Branch. Heard its a pretty scenic route.
Edit: Heres the link, that shows all of the former Conrail units that are still in their blue paint for NS.

Re: Conrails New Toy
I swear, at first glance I thought you'd gone and bought a train. But, even though I'm not much of a rail fan, this is pretty cool. You could also have some serious fun with that thing, judging by the suggestions I've seen so far.
We don't see many trains around here. Sure, we have tracks, even a station, but I don't go around that area much so haven't seen many of my local trains in action. Every now and again I'll hear a horn off in the distance or I'll see one running under an overpass I go across often. I might go down to the station soon, though, now that it's on my mind.

Once I get out of the Navy in a few months I might go back to watching trains again, I lost interest once I joined the Navy....

The pictures if the actual horn didn't load at first, and I thought 'dear lord, Connie's bought a train!" that's pretty cool though, and judging by the video it has a nice sound.

Never in my life will I see the type of money it takes to buy a trainAlpineopossum wrote:The pictures if the actual horn didn't load at first, and I thought 'dear lord, Connie's bought a train!" that's pretty cool though, and judging by the video it has a nice sound.
We did the test by some railroad tracks, but needless to say we still made a very quick exit out of the area.RandomClassic wrote:I can just imagine a couple somewhere in that area.
