Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
Well that was a silly smashfest. The new rules had a really bad debut tonight tbh, but the argument i'm seeing is tonight was the "worst case scenario race"
I'll give it to Grala i had him causing the lap 2 crash, not in anyone shape or form did i expect him to be the only car to leave without damage. So good for him.
Crafton did a nice Chaffin reenactment...which makes perfect sense in a how this race went and from a build-up point of view (I felt the two early airborne wrecks were warnings of the big one)

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
That was definitely one of the most destructive Truck Series races that I've ever seen. From the bits of racing that we did get to see, it definitely could have been great, otherwise. At the very least I was hoping that the finish would play itself out without being interrupted by an accident, but seemingly everyone was being extra-aggressive with their bumpers all night. Congratulations to Kaz Grala on his first NASCAR victory!
I reiterate that I do not prefer the new segmented format, but I think that it's even less appropriate for the Truck Series; the races are already short enough to where there can be action most of the whole race through if the trucks are competitive, with interruptions being unnecessary.
This race was also a little less enjoyable for me, personally, because I only got to watch Ryan Truex race for one lap. Spencer Gallagher had a very solid race, but was one of the many cars caught up in the last lap mayhem.
Oh well, we move on to Atlanta Motor Speedway next week. I anticipate that the racing there will be a lot of fun to watch!

The last lap wreck was horrifying, I'm glad everybody is alright.
Good on Kaz Grala winning, I'm really starting to like him just on that post race interview alone. I hope there's more where that came from.

This Xfinity race is playing out the same way as last night's Truck race. I really think NASCAR needs to reconsider using the stage formats for Daytona and Talladega.

I don't think the stages are at fault here. Everybody's just driving like an idiot. This is making ARCA look like the cleanest race in Speedweeks.

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
I don't get why people aren't blaming the stages. Everybody wanted to win stage one, so they drove aggressively to get to the front to win the stage. All of that caused huge wrecks early on because of that. That is why final stage will likely be more calm than the first ones because it is longer. Same deal with the truck race as well.

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
My only problem with the stages is the drivers. I have no idea why in a 120 lap race at Daytona to be so aggressive. It's like watching 10 lap NR4 and NR2003 races at restrictor plate tracks.

Because it's exciting. The stages has done exactly what Brian thought it would do. making it by far the most successful thing Brian France has ever done. I would rather watch a race where the drivers are fighting every lap for scraps than most of the 2016 500.

It is definitely exciting, but the big problem is the amount of big wrecks in the lower series races. I'm sure that the chance for a huge wreck near the beginning of the Daytona 500 is minimal due to experience, but the lower series shouldn't have stages if drivers are gonna' race the way they did in the truck and Xfinity race.

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
Any other track that would've been a comedy show, but since we're doing 200 mph here it go very old, very fast. I remember 98-99 being glorious smashfests but my god even those we're 10 times lesser than tonight.
Good win Ryan Reed, kept it the somewhat cleanest and seems to be a pretty good SS driver.
I do think the stages need dumping on superspeedways. We had 3 unnecessary wrecks (2 with 5 laps) cause of drivers getting over-anxious for crazy bonus points. Gimmicks that actually could end up hurting people is not a cool gimmick in my book. (It's a good thing safety has come along way, because Jones' hit looked so similar to Earnhardt's it was scary).

Yeah but a race that should have went for about 2 hours went almost double that time. If that pace is kept, the 500 could go for about 7 hours. It will just get way too stupid way too quick.

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
Jesus, that race was an ungodly crash fest. I thought to outdo the Truck race they would've had to junk it up on the initial start before the green flag. Guess not.
Scott Lagasse wasn't able to cause the big wreck last night, so he got it done today. On the contrary, Ryan Reed did some very impressive blocking on the final lap en route to that win. I give him props for that. GW #16.
That was a fun race when they were actually racing. Otherwise it was the worst race of the weekend so far. I anticipate that the 500 will probably be the cleanest race of the weekend. But then again, the Waltrip Bros. Tag Team Duo of Death have been out in force this year, so who knows...

First caution out fo rLaJoie. It...was actually tame compared to the first wreck of the Xfinity and ESPECIALLY the Truck race this weekend.

Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr are not gonna' win. Awesome
If only Jimmie got involved...
Also Elliott Sadler is in the lead and Brendan Gaughan is in the top fifteen.

That wreck just took out most of the biggest contenders this race. This last segment is going to be rather interesting I think.
Cole Whitt and DJ Kennington got wrecked which makes me pretty upset, but oh well.

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
Before this race, I wrote:Bold prediction: If the SHR cars haven't been affected by the switch to Ford, Kurt Busch will get it done today. It'll make for a good headline, the car carrying the new title sponsor wins the Daytona 500.
I CALLED IT.
After years of frustration, Kurt Busch has become the anti-hero (or "The Outlaw", as he used to call himself) of NASCAR -- he got booted out of Penske for his explosive temper, and settled for lower-tier teams like James Finch and Furniture Row, then he finally got another chance with a winning team in SHR, before he had the whole court case involving his ex-girlfriend which nearly ended his career. And now, after enduring all of that, he's finally a Daytona 500 winner. All things considered, for him, his crew chief Tony Gibson, and his team owner Tony Stewart (who's finally a Daytona 500 winner as an owner, by the way), it's hard to say that win wasn't well-deserved. They played all their cards correctly today. Good win and great job by Kurt Busch and the entire #41 team.
The #24 and the #88 had the cars to beat today. Junior was running well, as was to be expected, but he was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time in that accident with Kyle Busch in Turn 3. That really sucks; Junior's been talking a lot about retirement lately and his contract with HMS runs out after this season, so for all we know, that might have been his last Daytona 500 (probably not, or at least I hope not). Chase Elliott made some great moves, but he was throwing some overly-aggressive blocks, and when it came down to the end he came up short on fuel.
Ryan Blaney, though -- I was pulling so hard for the #21 that entire race. It would've only been fitting for the Wood Bros. to get their 100th race win in the Daytona 500. And Blaney was hauling ass all race long -- worked his way up from last place, ran up front and led a couple of laps, even overcame a problem with like fifty laps left which probably would've knocked him out had it not been for Jeffrey Earnhardt being retarded. He could've won that race if he had a better run on Kurt Busch right at the end there. Great job by Ryan for that second place run, though. Same for AJ Allmendinger in P3.
That was a really enjoyable race, formats be damned, but this has to have been the smashiest Daytona Speedweeks since at least 2012. And Jamie McMurray, man -- I love you, but easy on the bumping. Caused two unnecessarily big crashes today, and it's not the first time he's done that on a superspeedway either. As for everyone else, I couldn't understand why they were making it three-wide on the restarts. No need to be racing that hard with 50 laps to go.
And with Michael Waltrip finally retiring and Darrell slowly descending into senility, the Waltrip Bros. Tag Team Duo of Death is over with. But not with the bang I was quite expecting -- while I don't know how Darrell Waltrip was doing in the broadcast booth (because I wasn't listening), Michael actually was one of five cars not involved in a crash today and he finished eighth. Nevertheless, I must now retire this gimmick, which means I'll have to replace my avatar. What to replace it with is the question...

Re: 2017 Daytona Speedweeks
Solid race. Pretty good finish and a save from a clean sweep of crashfests (It got ugly around (120-150)
GW Kurt, Good to see him get the win at Daytona. Blaney and Dinger with great runs as well. (That power move by Blaney near the end was straight impressive)
Really need to talk the driving standards though, 75% damage rate at the very least from what i understand and that's just straight unacceptable, lot of dumb driving this weekend and in some cases from people who know better.

Good 500 overall, despite the mid-race demo derby. And congrats Kurt on finally breaking through. Wanted Blaney or Chase to win it, but Kurt deserved it after what he's been through.

I saw video of Tony Stewart in the post-race presser just now. His first comment was priceless:
"If I knew all I had to do was retire to get it (the 500) done, I'd have done it a long time ago."

Xfinity Gets an OK Rating from Me. too Many Wrecks outweigh the Good.
the 500 Gets a GOOD Rating. The Exact Opposite. Too much Good Overweigh the Stage 3 Brain-less Crashing. Glad Kurt Busch Finally Broke Through.
