Finally learned how to paint pit crews in GIMP
Remove the top two layers to get all of the wording (describing what each thing is) off, then click on "Image", and in that drop down menu, click "Merge Visible Layers". Then, go to "Edit", and click on "Undo Merge Visible Layers". After that, you can start painting the crew.

OR you can just hide the word layers and then paint from their, no merging needed
