NASCAR and ARCA @ Talladega

Never too early for this. This week, the Sprint Cup, the Xfinity Series and the ARCA Racing Series make their way too the fastest Superspeedway in the world, the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. Joe Gibbs Racing swept both of last year's race here in Sprint Cup and Xfinity with Denny Hamlin and Elliott Sadler, while Tom Hessert won the ARCA Race here last year driving for Cunningham Motorsports. Stewart-Haas Racing's Kurt Busch will also hope to keep his winning momentum up after dominating the most recent Sprint Cup race at Richmond and claiming victory.

Oh so they shortened it.

All the field size rules are the same as last year's rules. Daytona has 40 cars, tracks that are .75 miles or longer have 36 cars, and tracks that are shorter than .75 miles have 35 cars.

Jimmy Means has been in NASCAR since 1976. In that time, he has never had a car finish in the top 5 in any NASCAR series. His Xfinity program has been running since 2001, and has never finished in the top 10.

First Xfinity race I've watched in a long time. It wasn't bad. I'm very happy for Joey Gase and Jimmy Means. Means is one of those journeyman owners. He reminds me a bit of Junie Donlavey in that sense. It's great to see the little guy get a good run.

An update on Brad Smith has been announced. Smith broke both ankles and his left shoulder, as well as a laceration on the left ankle. He had surgery last night on both ankles. He is in stable condition and in good spirits, but will remain in the hospital.

I only just watched the ARCA race. The impact that the #48 took to the inside wall really scared me, and I'm honestly surprised (and gladly so) that his injuries weren't more severe. And I didn't see the post-race coverage, but I'm still not sure why Bobby Gerhart took to the pits coming to the white flag.

Aside from those incidents near the end, I thought that the race was one of the more entertaining ARCA races that I've seen at Talladega; the race for the lead was really competitive there were at least 10 cars that I thought had a legitimate chance to take the win near the end.

And Blake Jones did an astounding job for only his second superspeedway start! The Cunningham cars weren't the only ones who had a good chance at winning, but as usual, they were fast! It's a shame that Hessert couldn't make the "White-Checker" finish on fuel.
