Apocalypse Survival Special Pre-Race

As we all know, we narrowly escaped with our lives as the world didn't end on December 21, 2012.

To celebrate, the ARLA Elite Series has organized an all-star race of sorts at Rockford Speedway for December 22, billed as the Apocalypse Survival Special.

The field of 25 was entirely decided by ARLA fans; some of the names on the grid come to the shock of nobody, while there are others who surprisingly had bigger followings than suspected. TM Master Cup stars Kevin Dwyer and Adrien Devereux were voted into the race as well; Dwyer announced his intention to bring his own car, while newly-crowned series champion Devereux was invited to the race in a promotion by the Rockford Speedway, in which the track would provide a car for whoever won the Master Cup championship.

A notable absence from the entry list was 2012 champion Rip Tyler; his three wins and late-season charge to the top of the standings apparently did not impress fans enough.

Zachary Zins was voted in, and he has been cleared to race by the Mathers Clinic in Rockford, Illinois, after having been held there during the month following the Rockford 200.

Kalvin Oreiller was probably the biggest surprise on the entry list. Despite this reporter having only seen one #672 hat at any race this year, Oreiller had gained enough support to get into the race.

Team Burr never announced an intention to compete, but both Derek Dudding and A.J. Young were voted in by their legions of psychotic fans. Paul Lyons, the team's third driver, found a better ride at Grease Burger for this race. Lyons had competed in the #09 Grease Burger car in a few other races this year.

The starting lineup was determined by a random draw.

Zachary Zins cleared to race the Apocalypse Survival Special, will return to the Mathers Clinic following the race

After being announced as one of the drivers voted into the Apocalypse Survival Special; Zachary Zins, who continues to be under suicide watch after his breakdown during the Rockford 200 B-Main, was cleared to be put on temporary leave for the race. Afterward, he would be escorted back to the Mathers Clinic where he would remain until his scheduled release date of January 15th.

Zins, who was clearly under the influence of loads of antidepressants and anti-psychotics prescribed by the clinic, was able to speak with us briefly about his thoughts on being voted into the special event.

"Wow, well I'm just so happy to be voted in...I just want to spread love and flowers around the place..."

When asked if he had any thoughts on the tragedy that struck the Formula Overdrive finale a month following the Rockford 200 and if he believed there was some sort of conspiracy that led to the deaths, he responded in a shocking manner.

"Well, it was a real tragic event, life is short, and they died doing what they loved. Why would you think someone conspired to kill five drivers? What a horrible thing to say!"

Zins subsequently nodded off and began talking in his sleep about "Destruction and corporate corruption", ending our interview.
