What Local Tracks Have You Visited or Like to Visit? Empty What Local Tracks Have You Visited or Like to Visit?

Post by RealRacer4 Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:14 pm

http://travel.usatoday.com/destinations/10great/story/2012-05-31/10-great-places-for-small-town-NASCAR-racing/55315134/1#.T8i_mx69DrE.email

It's cool seeing Limaland being on the list, especially since it only got recently sanctioned by NASCAR. It's disappointing to not see Wall Stadium on the list since it's had a long history and the politics have been destroying its reputation. Sad

You people pretty much know I've gone to Eldora and Limaland. Here's the list of tracks I've gone to:

Tracks I've raced at:
-Wall Stadium (NJ. Both the quarter midget track and the big track)
-Bethel Speedway (upstate NY)
-Shenandoah Speedway (Virginia)
-Southside Speedway (race track Denny Hamlin grew up on. I was only there for a driver's clinic)
-Thompson Speedway (Connecticut. I've only raced on the quarter midget track though. I did get to see a couple of races while I was there)
-Kil-Kare Speedway (southern part of Ohio. Same thing applies with Thompson except I never actually got to see a race on the big track)
-Charlotte Motor Speedway (I know it's not exactly a local track but there were some track layouts I've raced on in events I would consider local. One of them was a 1/5 mile oval I've raced on that's built on a landfill located behind the 1.5 mile backstretch. I raced on the infield road course as well, which was fun)
-There were a bunch of the other tracks I've raced on that were quarter midget tracks but weren't near any local track.

Tracks I've visited but never raced on (yet):
-Eldora
-Limaland
-Riverhead (Long Island, NY)
-Englishtown Raceway Park
-Daytona
-Pocono
-Watkins Glen
-Kansas Speedway

Tracks that I want to visit or will visit:
-Volusia Speedway (dirt track in Florida I'll be visiting in February during Speedweeks)
-Bowman Gray Stadium (Do I need to say more)
-North Wilkesboro (although it's kind of dead)
-Irwindale Speedway (see N.W.)
-Bristol Motor Speedway (I'll only be there for the modified & truck race)

I've raced here in karts, tested a Spec Racer Ford there as well, and I'm currently working on fixing the alpha version of the track for NR2003. Cool

I've only ever been to Oulton Park to watch a race, but I've visited Daytona before.

I'd love to go to Star Speedway, or a track similar to that. I want to see what it's like to visit a short track, even if I have to fly thousands of miles to see it xD

I've been to Silverstone before for various amounts of race meetings including the BTCC, but I've never had the chance to actually be there to watch the British GP in Formula 1. I hope to go there in the future. I also went to see last year's Aaron's 499 race at Talladega as well.

I used to live right down the street from Bowman-Gray. Couldn't count how many times I went there. Most of the tracks I've been to that would today be called "local tracks", are ones that formerly had a NASCAR race. Or at the very least, ARCA, IMCA, or USAC.

Trenton International Speedway (Trenton, NJ)
Valdosta Speedway (Valdosta, GA)

And that's just the ones important enough for Ultimateracinghistory to list. I know there are others (West Liberty Raceway for instance) that aren't on the list. So at minimum, I've been to 130 different tracks in my life. Which probably explains my hearing problems.

Good lord. How did you manage to go to a lot of tracks?? Shocked

Too bad Trenton International Speedway and Old Bridge Stadium (the town I actually grew up in) got shut down due to developments. It would've been cool to see how the racing was back then, especially Trenton with the kink on the backstretch.

Since you brought up a ton of tracks, I got this booklet for free that lists every race track that exists throughout the U.S. and Canada. It's a really interesting what information is in there. http://speedwaysonline.com/

RealRacer4: When I was a kid, my family went out to the races like most people go out to clubs. My dad's job had us on the road most weeks (Winston-Salem was just 'home base'), so whenever we were in a new town, we'd always be sure to check out the nearest track. That explains most of the tracks east of the Mississippi: the west coast ones came from when I lived in California, and the midwestern ones have been slowly added over the last 17 years. I don't go to races nearly as much as I used to.

What Local Tracks Have You Visited or Like to Visit? Empty Re: What Local Tracks Have You Visited or Like to Visit?

Post by Alpineopossum Sat Jun 09, 2012 5:56 am

Having traveled around the eastern half of the us with my dad racing, I went to quite a fewnroad courses.
Some of the more famous ones were Daytona, Mid Ohio, Road Atlanta, and Road America.

Many were small local road courses
Putnam Park (Indiana) is a fast smooth track that is used for testing by the IZOD IndyCar Series teams.
Gingermen Raceway (Michigan) is a local road course in Michigan. I haven't been there in a loooooooooonnngg time.
Pittsburgh International Speedway (Pennsylvania) was formerly called Beaver Run. It's a special place because my father won a lot here and I raced on the kart track. That kart track was INTENSE.
Nelson Ledges (Ohio) is one of my favorites. Fast and bumpy, it's really close to home and I've been there a lot. I'm hoping to drive on it soon. Nelson was known for years for the The Longest Day, a sort of low end Le Mans, which my dad and my uncle raced in many times. Nelson Ledges is kind of old and is showing it's age (it needs to be repaved badly), but it is still awesome. More on Nelson later.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway ('04 Brickyard Practice, '05 Brickyard, '06 Brickyard, '08 Brickyard, '09 or '10 Brickyard, I can't remember which)

Indianapolis Raceway Park ('04 Busch Race, '05 Busch and Truck race, '06 Busch race I think, A Sprint car and Late Model race a couple years back)

I-69 Speedway [Gas City, IN] (My home track, only actually been once or twice)

Anderson Speedway [Anderson, IN] (Some race there, I think there were Figure 8 and Full Track races)

Michigan Speedway ('07 Cup race, didn't actually see the race, it was the one that was rained out for two days)

Bristol Motor Speedway ('07 Busch and Cup race a.k.a. the first COT race)

I'm 95% certain it was motorcross. I might have been there for a Cup race in 1970, though. I remember going to a dirt race where Johnny Halford's "Sponsor Wanted" car was leading for a while, and I can't recall if it was Columbia or Raleigh.

The track in your link is for N2003, right? This old computer can't handle that game.

You might be interested in one of the links in my signature as well.

Well there's that, and then there's the link to the documentary on the speedway.

Karting: Bayford Meadow, Lynn, Buckmore Park

I haven't been or attended a non-karting meet this year but I am planning to go to the British and Italian Grand Prix's (in a way, both local tracks for me Very Happy)
