Re: (LDS) Race 3 - Zing Energy Left Turns @ ABQ 100
- Spoiler:
- Malone endures Albuquerque slugfest for first LDS victory
In 2013, Mike "Knuckles" Malone brought home his first racing victory in an ARLA Street Stocks event at the ABQ Speedbowl; in 2014, he made his FARC Lowe Dollar Series debut at the track; and in 2016, he won his first Lowe Dollar series pole. This year, the L.A. restaurant's career came full circle as he brought his #5 Knuckles' Sandwiches to victory lane for the first time in the FARC Lowe Dollar Series.
The Super Series regular, making his first of two planned LDS attempts in 2018, quickly made a statement by again winning the pole, the third of his LDS career. The feature race did not begin as positively for Malone, as he found himself unable to hold off his more experienced and well-funded competitors, falling to the tail of the top ten in the running order, and soon finding himself swept up in several pileups as he tried to race back through heavy traffic. But Malone was far from finished.
Standing beside the hoodless and dented #5 in victory lane, the ever-confident and imposing Malone explained: "Everyone in the garage was countin' us out! They didn't think I have the car or the money to beat 'em! But fallin' back through the field, gettin' in those wrecks, only made me and the boys hungry! And where I come from, ya know what they say?! Hungry dogs run faster!"
"Speakin' of hungry. If yer hungry, and yer in L.A., get down to Knuckles' Sammiches! When I win, ya get 5 subs fer 5 bucks 5 days a week!"
Malone remained resilient on the race track, and used pit strategy to his advantage, putting a long line of lapped cars between himself and his challengers late in the race, to cruise to the checkered flag. While still scheduled to run the full season in the Super Series, Malone's victory and the new ten-race championship format in the Lowe Dollar Series led to reporters asking Malone if he might attempt to compete in additional races in the flagship series.
"I know what yer sayin', I'd love to see if I can get this team to more Lowe Dolla races and see how far we can go. It's all just a matta of gettin' the bucks togetha. But I just want ya punks to know you ain't seen the last of Knuckles! And that's not a message; That's a warnin'!!"

- FARC @ ABQ:
Tony Long Takes a Quiet 14th After Dismal Qualifying
The lone qualifier for the feature race in Albuquerque for SWH Racing was Tony Long as he managed to barely squeak in qualifying a dismal 36th.
"It is difficult, I'm not gonna lie" Tony stated. "I struggled in qualifying to get in the feature but I was still able to make it. Short tracks have never been my cup of tea but it is a good thing to make the features to get as many laps in as possible."
Even though Tony was involved in 2 yellows during the feature, he was able to slowly crawl his way forward. He was able to climb through the running order to take a respectable 14th even with a severely damaged car with no hood.
"There were a couple of good hits I took in the car but we were able to still recover" Tony said. "These guys at SWH work their tails off everyday and I am happy with this hard fought result for the team. Given my lack of a short track background with a team that believes in me and my ability, results happen."
"Texas will definitely be a better race for me" Tony continued. "NAAC is going to Texas in the season so I can use this race as practice for NAAC. I hope we get a good result at a track that better suits my driving background so we can get the team some momentum to build on for the rest of the season."
When asked about the Trophy Dash crash between his teammates Danica Holifield and Rich Roy, Tony said "I don't think it will harm anyone. It seemed like a racing incident, that just happens sometimes so I think Danica and Rich will be able to move on about it and not hold any grudges."

Re: (LDS) Race 3 - Zing Energy Left Turns @ ABQ 100
- MSR @ ABQ:
- The weekend didn't pan out exactly like Alexa Lake thought or wanted as during practice runs, her Kanako-mobile seemed to be lacking speed and even breaking down for no reason. This was after practice - "I am dumbfounded how a car can become so awful to drive after only two laps. This car is too tight and I'm already feeling vibrations, y'all. I felt these same vibrations at the open'r and it cost me a good run. I talked to Manny after the race and he said similar things. I will not succumb to Kanako. I sure do miss my Calton-Morel..but I will be tryin' my best here too."
Qualifying proved to be an ordeal as Alexa Lake's car would very quickly lose pace and she'd only get in a really slow, but quick enough lap before her car would give out on her. She was the slowest on time and qualified 40th.
"Drat. These vibrations caught up to me again and my vehicle began to slow coming out of turn 4. I'm lucky I got a lap in before my car died on me. I'm not liking this vibrating, y'all, and I sure hope it stops soon. Otherwise, my season's going to be plagued with mechanical failures of sorts."
Come race time, Alexa Lake started out well in her #26 Binco Kanako, but nearly immediately she reported some more vibrations taking place and it was causing her to be very wide. Not even ten laps in, Alexa Lake would pit to have the car checked out and diagnosed, losing her a lap and a bit. She returned to track and in the process of being lapped, the vibration got worse and it knocked out a cylinder, which made Alexa Lake run even slower..
She also got herself into several wrecks, all which she continued on from. She clipped a poorly car and sent herself around and collected others as well, which brought out another caution in the wreckfest of a race it already was.
Later on, a four wide situation with multiple lap down cars and lead lap leaders saw Alexa Lake and many more spin and crunch into the outside wall in turn 3, sending Alexa Lake and another on their sides, and Alexa Lake would even roll the car.
TOUGH AMERICAN METAL as Alexa Lake would surprisingly continue on after rolling.
Coming to the close, Alexa Lake would cross the line 25th, four laps down with significant damage from a very mechanically battered car and a very beaten up car. A quick study shows that car was mere laps from losing its engine. It is already a miracle the car didn't fail.
"Well folks, that isn't how I expected my run to go in ABQ, but I am mere shocked this trashed up clunker didn't die out on me. I'm told the engine was givin' up a ghost, 'er, close to it. I am not a fan of this Kanako brand - but, here's to hopin' this car won't be the death of me."
"In other news, my move to Ft. Worth, Texas has occurred. I am finally moved in back home and getting things ready for a portion of Master Sport Racing's details ready as I believe we're going ahead and moving the headquarters to Texas - a few miles from where I just moved back.
"I am also gettin' ready for my junebug to be born. I was actually born here in Ft. Worth, Texas but when I was 20, I moved to Jacksonville, Florida to help pursue a career in racin' and that is where I gained ownership of Master Sport Racing. About my baby boo, when he is born, I am not sure if I will miss a race or not..."

- Roy Speaks About Spin
Rich Roy had this to say after his spin in the trophy dash. "My team and Danica's didn't do anything wrong. It was people not using their head." When asked if his relationship with the team was damaged, he replied "What Tony said was right."

- Spoiler:
- Malone added to Texas entry list with new sponsor
Coming off his first FARC Lowe Dollar Series victory at the ABQ Speedbowl, Mike Malone announced that he had added at least one additional race to his LDS schedule. The #5 Knuckles Racing team will attempt to score a second straight victory in the Patriot Cola Star Spangled Flavor 100 at Texas Motor Speedway, with new sponsorship from Milton's Mustard.
"Milton's gave us a call the mornin' after the race and asked if I wanted to do bidness", explained Malone in a Facebook video. Startin' today, we're servin' Milton's Die-john Mustard right here at Knuckles' Sandwiches, and they're gonna be on a brand new Saar that I'm gonna drive in the next race at Texas!"
"I was so proud of me and the boys after we brought home the trophy this week, and dis deal makes things even betta. We're gonna go out there and try to make it two inna row, and I'm gonna keep making calls and see how far we can go in the Lowe Dollah Series this year."
