2013 Great Lakes Invitational Hockey Tournament
Defending champions Michigan Tech entered the tournament, riding on the momentum of their title from last year. The win was Michigan Tech's first championship at the tournament in 32 years. Playing Michigan State in the semi-finals again today, their last-15 record against State before today was (1-14), with their lone victory coming last year. That didn't stop the Huskies, however, as they defeated the Michigan State Spartans in the overtime shootout period. They will go on to possibly defend their title from last year when they play in the championship game tomorrow.
The second semi-final game pitted the Western Michigan Broncos against the University of Michigan Wolverines. U&M was officially ranked third in the Division 1 NCAA standings coming into the tournament, sporting a (12-2-2) record, while the Broncos are (7-8-3) on the season. Wolverines' Forward Travis Lynch sniped one for a goal to tie the game 2-2 in the third period, effectively sending the game into overtime. It appeared as if the game would conclude in the shootout as the clock rolled, but with just 18 seconds left in overtime Josh Pitt from WMU dazzled the U&M defense and scored. Western Michigan, now (8-8-3), set up the rematch of last year's championship game between WMU and Michigan Tech.
Will post recap and possibly highlight videos after tomorrow's games
