Tragedy Strikes Great Lakes Motorsports
(OCC: Given Roush's recent history with airplanes, and Rick Hendrick track record with planes as well, I decided to write this up. This is completely fictional. I have never lost a relative or friend in a plane crash.)
Owner's Brother and Nephew among 9 killed in Plane Crash
Great Lakes Motorsports owner, Jim More as well as the whole team is in shock today after the announcement that a small plane carrying 7 members of the GLM team as well as the 2 pilots crashed in a field just north of Kirkland, Illinois. The plane according to team spokesman, Jeff Went, was headed to Rockford, Illinois, and the crew of 7 was to prepare accommodations for the team for the upcoming Rockford 200 weekend.
The FAA reports that the flight left Grand Rapids, Michigan about 4:30am et this morning and disappeared from their radar at shortly after 5:30am this morning. 911 callers to the Kirkland dispatch had witnesses reporting that they saw a large fireball. Rescue workers arrived on about 20 minutes after the first 911 call. No survivors were found. The investigation into the crash is currently on going.
Those killed in the crash include More's younger brother, Randy; Randy's son, Mark; HP Engineparts representative Kyle Cash; Mark's girlfriend, Jessica Wright; team manager, Paul Lepage; Lepage's wife Sarah; and the car chief on the #38 of Jarkko Forsström, Larry Brown. Also killed were the two pilots, Captain Roger Shirley, a retired Air Force officer, and Captain Jack Travis.
Following the announcement by the FAA, flags outside the GLM shop in Grand Rapids were lowered to half-staff.
Jim's older brother Michael was seen with his son Michael Jr. outside the shop helping to lower the flag.
More has yet to release a statement to the press about the incident, but it is believed one will come this afternoon.
