This. IMO, I think it should be a non-points race since it's going to be in the same month of the Indy 500. I'm personally not too crazy about the idea but I guess we'll see how things will go from here.Alta wrote:Interesting.

24 or 33 cars? (personally, I don't think 24 is enough, and that 33 should be Indycar's standard number)

The reason IndyCar won't go back to having that size of a field other than in the 500 is because of Dan Wheldon's death at Las Vegas two years ago. They don't want to risk that happening again.Pyrozooka0 wrote:24 or 33 cars? (personally, I don't think 24 is enough, and that 33 should be Indycar's standard number)
Besides, based on the quality of the races we've seen this season, I think 24 is more than adequate.

I can tell that there will some people crying foul over this because its "breaking tradition". However, I think this would add on to the tradition at Indianapolis.

Actually, I don't believe IndyCar currently has a field limit on any races other than the 500, so technically there could be a 33 car field for the Indy road course. They used one in 2011, which was set 26 cars, but was pretty much ignored because they didn't want to send anybody home. (Hence the huge 30+ car fields in a couple races that year.) Personally, I think field limits should be set by the size of the track.PackerMan71 wrote:The reason IndyCar won't go back to having that size of a field other than in the 500 is because of Dan Wheldon's death at Las Vegas two years ago. Which is exactly how the AAA came up with the 33 car field size after the inaugural 1911 running, even though it wasn't adopted at the Indianapolis 500 until 1915.flyingturns89 wrote:Actually, I don't believe IndyCar currently has a field limit on any races other than the 500, so technically there could be a 33 car field for the Indy road course. The AAA determined that the safest distance between each car spread out around the track would be about 400 feet, equaling to 33 cars around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2.5-miles).

Then again, I highly doubt an Indy car is keeping at 220+ for an entire lap on a road coursePackerMan71 wrote:The reason IndyCar won't go back to having that size of a field other than in the 500 is because of Dan Wheldon's death at Las Vegas two years ago. Well, this is another race at Indy I will go to! And like BBoy said earlier, doing the road course would add tradition instead of breaking it like some people elsewhere are saying. I'm very excited to see it.
