2011 TMMC points, Latfordized! Empty 2011 TMMC points, Latfordized!

Just a silly little time-wasting project I did a while back. The exact system used is the 1975-2003 version, without the extra bonus points for race wins. Karjala and Indy still get double points.

1. Tom Delgado 2592
2. Marcos Leonard 2576
3. Chris Johaanes 2525
4. Louis Kingston 2499
5. Adrien Devereux 2493
6. Leonid Roderick 2465

116. Jacob Eichholtz 49
117. Alexey Stoyanovich 43
118. Brian Sendack 40
119. Takumi Nagata 12

For some reason, I listed the Independant's trophy points by team, not driver. And off the top of my head, I can't recall who drove each one, so it'll just get listed this way.

1. Palmer Stiles Racing 479
2. M&J Racing 474
3. Alexisports 452
4. Fortner Motorsports 450 (The 121)
5. Racing For the Community 402
6. McDermott Motorsports 400 (The 69)
7. Motorsport Hermanos Gutierrez 395
8. Finntech 392 (The 12)
9. Fortner Motorsports 391 (The 122)
10. McDermott Motorsports 364 (The 68)
11. Mitchell & Sons Racing 358
12. Finntech 355 (The 22)
13. Team Thunder 334
14. Alex Harrison Racing 310
15. Ian Masterson Racing 232
16. RUS Autosports 91

Volpi's #1 easily won the owner's championship, with 2713 points.

If each race counted the same, Chris Johaanes would have won the title with 2453 points.

Thanks for doing the math. Very Happy

Scott Steudler and Yuliya Nosova's placings are proof-positive why I don't award points to the whole field (or in English, award points for simply starting). In Steudler's case, its because he spent most of 2011 way back with people he had no business racing with considering that the 23/64 got more A class draws than anyone else. Steudler racked up three DNQs (but started Indy in Savin's place), and Nosova usually ran nowhere but managed to sneak in a few points finishes here and there.

Steudler is still last of all the full-time cars here with 1602 points compared to Tom Delgado's 2592. In actuality, he wound up with 90 compared to Adrien Devereux's 463.

Let's punch the numbers. He wound up with 61% of Delgado's points haul despite being pretty bad most of the time. With the actual points system he wound up with only 19% of the champion's points tally. Steudler only finished in the top 10 twice and retired from nine races.

Nosova's figures are even more telling. She had 81% (rounded up from 80.9) of Tom Delgado's points haul, only cracked the top ten twice, and had six DNFs. Translation? Nosova is only 17th because she was running at the finish. In the actual points system (she ended up with 105), she had 27% of Devereux's points haul and was a distant 33rd in the driver's points -- only four points ahead of Curtis Darcy (started two races and could have won Indy).

Furthermore, Nosova is behind Charlie Waters, who when he wasn't wrecking was actually pretty fast, Independent's Trophy winner Palmer Stiles, Super-Sub Kraig Mummert, and the master of scoring points in special events, Ian Cooper. She's well ahead of all of them in this system.

Thought I'd share that. Cool

Nosova also benefited from having the eighth highest point total in the double-point events. Yeah, with an average finish of 20th in those two races, she scored more points than 3/4's of the field. I'm not sure if that's a reflection of the point system, or of just how inconsistent the rest of the field is. Probably both.

If you think that's bad, take a look at the late Scott Hamilton. Before his untimly demise, he was running 12th in points, and had been flirting with the top ten all season long, despite only having one top ten finish. Basically, he'd coasted by on finishing 18th on a regular basis. (Much like Kevin Harvick in Cup this year. In the last 19 races, Harvick's finished between 10th and 16th 16 times.)

However, there are a few drivers who I think are more accurately represented with this system. Take Kurt Plissken for example. He had 8 DNF's, as well as three DNQ's. As far as I'm concerned, he has no place being in the top twenty with a year like that. And with this system, he falls to 29th. A few flukey good runs shouldn't erase a sucky season.

Avery Holtzman is an even better example. He had 8 consecutive races where he either finished 23rd or worse (including 4 straight 30th or worses), or missed the race entirely. And yet, he still was able to coast his way to a top ten point finish thanks to his early season cushion. Meanwhile, Tom Delgado, who finished in the points in 13 out of 20 races (compared to Holtzman's Cool, only finished outside the top 30 once all year, and more importantly, won twice compared to Holtzman's zero wins, wound up outside the top ten. That doesn't seem right to me. Not that Tom should have won the title, but he should definitely have been ahead of Holtzman.

In summation: There is no such thing as a perfect point system.

76th place, I'll take it, even though my driver finished outside the top 20 both times. Indy due to tire issues and Decatur... well, the car wasn't going the way it was intended too.
