2016 Monaco GP Empty 2016 Monaco GP

Post by The_Wall_91 Mon May 16, 2016 5:56 pm

Round 6 takes us to one of the smallest countries with one of the most famous race tracks in Monaco. The tire compounds will be Soft, Supersoft, and Ultrasoft. Here are the storylines entering the 1st race of the Greatest Day in Racing.

Lewis Hamilton vs. Nico Rosberg

If you missed this, you are either deaf or blind. Entering turn 4 on lap 1, Lewis Hamilton went in to the grass taking himself and Nico Rosberg out. This move ended Rosberg's win streak at 7. Let's just say that the drivers weren't happy with eachother and their bosses were not happy with them.

Ferrari: What Happened?

After the Mercedes debacle, most people expected this to be the race for Ferrari to lose. They not only lost to Red Bull, they were, in my eyes, utterly disappointing to the expectations they set for themselves. The Prancing Horses will definitely have some explaining to do rather soon.

Max Verstappen's Miracle on Asphalt

The winner of the Spanish GP was an 18 year-old, 2nd generation driver from the Netherlands named Max Verstappen. His weekend in Spain broke several major records in Formula 1. He became the youngest driver to lead a lap and the youngest driver ever to be on the podium, breaking Vettel's records.

Is Red Bull the Team to Challenge Mercedes?

Over the past few races since China, Red Bull has proven that they are a force to be reckoned with. There has been a lot of talk (from a certain person(Cynon) that Monaco will be the race Red Bull will destroy everyone. We will see if whether or not Red Bull is the 2nd front runner instead of the 3rd.

Carlos Sainz is on Fire

The other hero of the Spanish GP was Carlos Sainz. In an underpowered car, he topped in P3 and held on to finish 6th. His season has kept him in the top 10 in points all year long. Could his season end up in a ride with a better team for 2017?

Who Will Improve From Test?

This Tuesday will be the first of a two day test in Spain. This test will see many upgrades by all teams except Sauber. All Ferrari powered cars will get the 2016 spec engine, Red Bull is getting many upgrades, Renault is expecting huge upgrades. No word from Mercedes and Manor on upgrades that will happen.

Monaco is likely to be Red Bull's, and McLaren's for that matter, best opportunity at this point in the season. The track relies on low-speed grip far more than any other, while relying much less on power, and that's Red Bull's chief strength and weakness.

Not that I'm complaining.

My question is, will we see Verstappen back in the Red Bull? (I feel like he will based on what he did)

Driver swap was confirmed to be for the rest of the year and beyond.

I think this stretch of races really decides if it's a championship run for Rosberg, albeit he was killing at the start of the year my worry was once he faltered he might not get back up again...we'll see.

Pascal Wehrlein Testing the Silver Arrow

In a move by Mercedes, they have decided to give Manor driver Pascal Wehrlein an opportunity in the Silver Arrow.

There is no reason as to why Mercedes did this but now, neither Lewis nor Nico can drive in the second test of the season after Silverstone.

Pascal's a Mercedes Junior driver, and a driver with a lot of talent too with more room to learn. At the same time, depending on what Kimi does at the end of the season it wouldn't surprise me too much if Lewis ends up wearing red in a season or two.

I think Rosberg's in as good a position as he could be. Although outpaced in qualifying by Hamilton he still managed to get back past before being taken out - I'd imagine he feels as wronged as Hamilton did back in Belgium 2014. The fact that Niki Lauda, who historically has been more pro-Hamilton, came down on his side will only reinforce that feeling. This is also on top of the fact that Monaco is a track where Rosberg has traditionally been stronger than Hamilton anyway.

Grosjean to Use Tribute Helmet

As remembrance to the late Jules Bianchi, Romain Grosjean will use a helmet inspired by the memory of Jules.

In 2014, Bianchi finished 9th in the Manor in what turned out to be Bianchi's highlight before passing away last July due to injuries sustained in Japan GP in 2014.

Commentators were being dumb. Because everyone slowed down under VSC, the gap in time increased, and the VSC ended at the perfect time for Markalov to pit and take advantage of Nato and Rowland still getting up to speed. if the VSC stayed out another 30 seconds, Markalov would of lost his advantage.

Rosberg Out of Mercedes?

F1 recently did an interview with Manor driver Pascal Wehrlein about his F1 season. In the interview, he believes that he will be in a Silver Arrow for 2017 due to the fact that Nico Rosberg's contract is supposedly expiring at the end of 2016.

In my eyes, Rosberg has been driving his ass off this season for that reason. He knows that his contract will expire and he is doing an audition for the other teams. But, I think Wehrlein may need to be careful if he is around Nico.

If Rosberg is out, where does he go? McLaren may need a couple of drivers but that would be a massive downgrade for Nico. Ferrari only makes sense if Raikkonen retires. Manor and possibly Sauber are the only other options.

Why would you get rid of Rosberg when he's been arguably outperforming Hamilton? Sure, Hamilton's still faster over a single lap, but he's been making the errors while Rosberg has safely banked every single result he's been able to. Why fix what's not broken?

EDIT: Niki Lauda would appear to agree with this sentiment.

No, you just need to meet the minimum time the FIA sets for each sector. And since everyone's going slower, obviously the time gap will increase since while the track distance between two cars is the same, by going slower, more time will pass. Otherwise, if maintaining a time gap was enforced, the VSC would be incredibly unfair cars in front since once you get back to racing speed the car behind will be a lot closer.

I don't think I've ever seen a driver who can execute a given strategy like Daniel Ricciardo. Barcelona last time out aside, every time the team give him something tricky to do, he goes out and aces it.

That could make the race even more interesting.

Daniil Kvyat's miserable last couple of week has worsened after he fails post-qualifying inspection.

Solid Monaco GP that kind of petered off at the end. Boy Red Bull blew that race so hard it wasn't even funny, the decision to play to what Hamilton did was already a not smart move but then the pit stop blew any chance they had left.

Also Perez on the podium makes me a happy camper. Good run for him.
