Re: Tony Stewart Is (Apparently) Retiring At The End Of The 2016 Season
- LOTS OF PROFANITY BELOW:
- Tony Stewart fucking beat Earnhardt in his final NASCAR race against him before the day of his death. Tony Stewart fucking won three titles under three different series names. Tony Stewart fucking invented the perfect mix of Foyt and Junior Johnson. Tony Stewart fucking won THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THREE DIFFERENT SERIES IN THE SAME YEAR. Tony Stewart fucking came into the sport at 30 and still became the hottest rookie. Tony Stewart fucking got AJ Foyt sick. Tony Stewart fucking came from 43rd to win at Pocono. Tony Stewart fucking came from 42nd to win at Daytona. Tony Stewart fucking led 94% of laps in Daytona. Tony Stewart fucking won a CART championship and then two years later won the ROTY and then three years later won the NASCAR championship. Tony Stewart fucking entered with no facial hair and will leave with a grey 5 o'clock shadow. Tony Stewart fucking gave the Victory Junction Gang camp ONE MILLION DOLLARS because he wanted to. Tony Stewart Racing fucking has 5 WoO championships. Tony Stewart Racing fucking has 8 USAC Sprint Car Championships. Tony Stewart Racing fucking has 8 USAC Silver Crown Championships. Tony Stewart Racing fucking has a USAC Midget Car championship. Tony Stewart, again, won all three in the same year. Tony Stewart then opened another team and won two more championships in 4 years, in that series we call the NSCS. Tony Stewart fucking is amazing.
Tony Stewart, without the profanity, is my favorite driver.
Tony Stewart, with the profanity, is my fucking favorite person ever.

It sucks, but the writing was on the wall well beforehand. He messed up his leg in that Sprint Car wreck in 2013 and he hasn't been the same since; of course that's not even discounting the Kevin Ward, Jr. incident.

Not a shock. Tony hasn't been good since 2012 and it's at the point where it's just getting sad..
Here's a scary fact...Tony has a shot at finishing worse in points than he did last year sitting out 3 races.

Ever since 2013 he's been really dropping in talent.
But the guy is a 3 time champ, IRL champ, started first for the 1996 Indy 500, USAC champ, 48 Cup wins, 11 Xfinity wins and 2 truck wins. Also ran IROC, the Rolex 24 almost won it back in 2004, won the Chili Bowk in 2002 and 2007, he also has Eldora, which because of his support, has a Truck date, and we are ever grateful for that.
What does suck is he's been winning every Daytona race, expect the 500. He may be the best driver to never win the Daytona 500. He's a legend in racing, and I wish him the best in his retirement and whatever he decides to do!

Well, when you go from driving cars you've been used to running (Gen 4) to a different style (Gen 6). I think the changes, combined with age and the sprint car incidents, hurt Tony A LOT. Really, this was probably going to be the case no matter if the Ward Jr. thing happened or not.

Clint Bowyer will replace Tony Stewart in the 14 in 2017 after Stewart retires following the 2016 season.

Re: Tony Stewart Is (Apparently) Retiring At The End Of The 2016 Season
It's almost impossible to tell whether or not Stewart's results would have been worsening in the past two years had he not had those two major sprint car accidents; I would imagine that those accidents (especially the Kevin Ward, Jr. tragedy) would be extremely difficult to recover from both on and off the track. I find it to be a shame that such terrible luck has struck him recently.
Nothing will take away from the fact, however, that Stewart has had one of the greatest racing careers of anyone in recent memory, and that he had talent like few others ever have. I remember watching him get turned into the grass at Daytona and coming back up onto the track in turn 1... without ever losing control. That memory stands out to me, but there are so many more examples of how he could drive a car in ways that few others could (and in so many disciplines of auto racing, too).
As much attention as the media have given Tony over the years for aggressive driving and controversial comments, he's done so much for others with charitable donations, and things like him loaning his plane to the Wilson family to use on the tragic day at Pocono this year only exemplify his generosity. He's done a lot for others over the course of his career.
On an urelated note, his #14 car was also the final car that Mark Martin ever raced, at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2013.
I certainly wouldn't expect it, but it would be amazing if he were to to finally win the Daytona 500 next year. While it's unfortunate that he has not been competitive recently, Stewart will definitely be retiring as yet another NASCAR legend.
