CWTS - Mudsummer Classic
Well, what to do this week? After all there is only the NWS race at Chicago right? Oh way a minute, the trucks ON dirt.
That's right. For the first time, the trucks take to Eldora. This is Wednesday night, so not only is it a midsummer classic, it's a midweek classic.

- Spoiler:
- Jared Landers: He runs regularly in the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series. He moved up through the ranks winning a bunch of dirt modified races and won numerous dirt late model races for Clint Bowyer Racing (who he currently drives for). He's not exactly as good as some of the driver he competes with but he can hold on his own pretty well.
Jimmy Wellers III: This surprises me a bit. He's raced and won a few sprint car and dirt modified races for a few years before switching over to asphalt and has raced late models since '07. He has some experience on the K&N Series but overall, his resume doesn't stand out from the other drivers.
Tracy Hines: He's raced in NASCAR before, and has spent a lot of years racing in USAC and is usually a serious contender. He's one of the "dirt ringers" I think people should keep an eye on.
J.R. Heffner: He's raced several ARCA races and only finished in the top 15 a couple of times. He regularly runs big block dirt modifieds and has won a few championships. It's hard to say how well he'll do.
Scott Bloomquist: A few of us should at least heard of this guy. He's considered a dirt late model HOF'er and has won over 500 feature races in his career and won the Dream 100 at Eldora last month. He's another "dirt ringer" people should watch out for as he's racing for KBM.
Jeff Babcock: Unless you follow dirt racing closely in the western part of Ohio, you have never heard of this guy before. He typically runs a dirt modified and late model on a weekly basis and does pretty well. He's won one or two feature races at Eldora this year, but I don't think this will indicate he will do well in the truck race.
Kenny Wallace: Before moving up to NASCAR, he was a notorious driver in USAC.. Kenny Schrader currently runs his dirt modified at a bunch of different dirt tracks and is a force to be reckoned with. I can see him do very well.
Ryan Newman: The same can be said for him as with Schrader, though I don't think he's raced on dirt in a while other than competing in the Prelude.
Kenny Wallace: He never started racing on dirt until several years ago. He's not exactly the best when it comes to dirt racing but the equipment he runs makes up for it.
Ty and Austin Dillon: When they have their weeks off in NASCAR, they race their dirt mods and late models for Team Dillon Racing. This won't surprise me if one of them ends up winning this race.
Kyle Larson: Do I need to say more? He's raced in a ton of dirt races and kicks everyone's butt out there.
Dave Blaney: He's competed in the WoO Sprint Car Series before moving up to NASCAR and is a popular driver in Ohio. You could say that Dave Blaney leading at Eldora would be like Dale Jr. leading at Talladega.

Wouldn't be surprised that the fact NASCAR locked in the top 20 for a 30 truck race turned away potential one-offs.

Re: CWTS - Mudsummer Classic
We only have two true one-off teams in this race. The 44 and the 6. We do have a bunch of one-off drivers. Also, despite JJC being listed as the driver of the 10 truck, it will be her father Joe.
Re: CWTS - Mudsummer Classic
Nascar has a rule that if the owner of a track is a NASCAR driver, the driver cannot compete at that track.
That's why Tony isn't racing Eldora.

Also:
Eldora tire developement a challenge for Goodyear: For Goodyear, the challenge of building tires for NASCAR is a diverse undertaking. Making safe and competitive tires as the exclusive supplier for NASCAR's top three national series means developing tires for race tracks ranging from one-half mile to 2.66 miles long, on concrete and asphalt, and surfaces as rough as a cheese grater and as smooth as glass. This season, with the Camping World Truck Series adding the dirt track of Eldora Speedway to the schedule, the challenge got even bigger. The inaugural "Mudsummer Classic," scheduled for Wednesday, July 24 at the half-mile track in Western Ohio, will be the first NASCAR national series race held on dirt in more than 40 years. But for Goodyear, who has been involved in a wide array of racing disciplines over the years, it was just a matter of dipping into the playbook and coming up with a solution. The new "Wrangler" tires that Goodyear will bring to Eldora for the Truck Series are based upon a dirt modified tire in its tire line. However, the NASCAR dirt tire has been widened to 11 inches (from 10 inches) to provide a larger contact patch with the track and give the trucks more grip. The two primary differences from the standard race tires run on ovals in NASCAR's top three series is that the Eldora tire will be a bias ply tire and feature a tread pattern. The bias ply tire construction is not as stiff as the radial tire used on paved NASCAR ovals, therefore it is more compliant and more able to envelope the irregularities of a dirt surface. As far as the tread, the Eldora tire features Goodyear's G23 pattern, which is a standard block pattern. It has grooves and biting edges to help evacuate dirt from underneath the tire, giving the trucks more grip. The tread compound itself is on the "softer" end of the spectrum, which will also help with grip. While the Eldora right-side tire will basically remain the same height as a NASCAR tire run on asphalt tracks, the left-side is a little shorter to build in more stagger, which will help the trucks turn better. For Goodyear, the tire development process started last October with a test on the 10-inch tire at Eldora with track owner and three-time Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, former Camping World Truck Series champion Austin Dillon, and his brother and current Truck Series contender Ty Dillon. In addition to seeing how the tread pattern evacuated the dirt and the compound put down rubber, it was important that there were no clearance issues which could lead to the tires rubbing against the truck or its suspension parts. Once Goodyear produced the 11-inch tire, Ty Dillon went back to 311 Speedway, a dirt track in Pine Hall, NC. When everything checked out with that test, Goodyear had its Eldora tire.(Goodyear PR)(7-12-2013)
Also, it's called the MUD Summer Classic, not Mid Summer.

It's an RCR truck with RSS owner points so that they could be guaranteed a spot in the field, if I remember correctly. Since they're using Ryan Sieg's owner points, he's probably going to go over to the other RSS truck driven by Chris Jones in the #93.Lucstar88 wrote:Dillon with RSS... wat

I think calling it the Mudsummer Classic was Stewart's idea.

Jason Bowles will drive for Richie Wauters in the 5 truck at Eldora in place of Tim George, Jr. with Valvoline sponsorship.

It's a weird feeling knowing that I'll be at Eldora in person tomorrow. Being there to watch a NASCAR race at a dirt track is going to be something else.

Re: CWTS - Mudsummer Classic
Sorry for the double post but SPEED is currently broadcasting truck practice and these are the first practice session results:
1 Larson-19.645
2 D. Blaney- 19.656
3 R. Blaney- 19.918
4 A. Dillon- 19.982
5 T. Dillon- 20.205
6 B. Gaughan- 20.349
7 J. Townley- 20.483
8 S. Bloomquist- 20.496
9 R. Hornaday- 20.499
10 D. Armstrong- 20.538
Some big surprises like JWT and Armstrong. I heard JWT tore up a car in the first practice session though.
Holy crap. I've never seen Eldora that bumpy before. After hearing what happened during the Late Model Dream last month, having those windshields aren't the worst thing in the world. A couple of drivers had their helmets damaged from rocks flying into their cock pits (dirt cars never run windshields), one of which had a broken nose and bruised eye as a result of it. I still wish they can remove the windshields and have drivers wear tear-off on their helmets so it gives the track workers more freedom to do what they want with the track, like making it a lot more tacky than it was when they first started the first practice session.

Re: CWTS - Mudsummer Classic
Such an odd site seeing the trucks sideways through the dirt but then again, I said the same about the TORC series when they plowed through the turns. Looks just as cool.
One thing I do wonder is going off the winged sprint cars, maybe having something like a blade across the top (down the right side) of the Truck as well as some more of that skew as well as some additional stagger would help them turn through the dirt better.

Re: CWTS - Mudsummer Classic
That does it for the practice session. Watching it on SPEED has certainly given me a good idea of what we might be seeing tomorrow. Though, the way the track conditions are now won't mean anything tomorrow. It's supposed to be cooler here tomorrow and the track workers will completely re-do the track once the dirt late model race ends tonight (which I wish SPEED Channel was broadcasting ). Track conditions on dirt change a lot more often than pavement tracks, which is what makes dirt racing a challenge.
JWT has certainly shown his old self today. A few drivers, like James Buescher and Jeb Burton are struggling quite a bit on getting the hang of driving on dirt. Seeing the Dillon brothers, Blaneys, Larson, Schrader, and Tracy Hines being fast is no surprise at all. A driver worth keeping an eye on is Scott Bloomquist. He tends to take a much different approach from most drivers and has great knowledge on race cars as far as set-ups, what lines to run, etc. I've read some articles on him and they're worth reading. One of the surprises have been Ron Hornaday. He's been consistently quick in both practice sessions. I have expected Matt Crafton to do well in practice since he raced some dirt modifieds earlier this year and has struggled.
I'll be watching this race at the track tomorrow. I can't wait to see how the racing will be throughout the night.

When does Johnny Sauter not through a fit about contact? You don't have to even so much as touch him when he wrecks and he'll get all bitchy. Remember watching him on that program that use to air when it went behind the scenes with him, total brat and this was a guy in crappy equipment not even capable of qualifying every week.

Still, thoroughly enjoying this racing, wild start in the LCW. And the 07 goes around, caution. This just got good.
