In all honesty, for offline leagues then yes NR2003 is a fantastic game. At it's time it out did the majority of the games around it, apart from Grand Prix series by Geoff Crammond and Grand Prix Legends (also developed by Papyrus).
I put a list for best games based on specific components and an overall:
Physics: GP series, GPL, NetKar Pro
Online: rFactor, iRacing
Additions: rFactor, NR2003, GP series (in particular 3 and 4)
AI: NR2003, GP series, GPL
Graphics: Unfortunately Codemasters F1 2011 and DIRT series are by far superior, despite a shit physics etc.
Offline leagues: NR2003, GP series
Set up (speed of installation, wheel/controller set up, system/graphics set up): NetKar Pro, rFactor
Wheel usability: rFactor, iRacing
Cost: GP Series, rFactor, GPL (NR2003 would if it had come out, but now £100...)
Overall: GP Series, GPL
Of course, I will have a different opinion as every will do. In general, this is probably more of a European and also the opinion from someone that drove irl as well.

I haven't played enough sims to have a real good opinion, but I would say NR2003 is the best. Though I do think eventually there will be a sim that matches it or betters it, I don't see it in the near future.

NR2003 is the best Nascar simulator out there. Really high up on the racing simulators as well.

Re: Racing game Throne Poll
NR2003 will definitely hold a legendary place in sim racing history. Let's go back to January of 2003 when the game was released; Who would have guessed that it would be living on 10+ years from that point? Few games have ever had lifespans of 10 years, and I can only think, right now,of game series that have had life spans that long, not necessarily video games themselves.
I remember when NR2003 first came out, and I played it for the first time. I was amazed at how the graphics looked and the way the cars drove; It was simply so far ahead of its time. When I first went online, that brought the game into a new dimension. Back then, the thought of racing with 40+ other real people was astonishingly far-fetched, but Papyrus made it work, and it worked well. All those innovations attest to the reason why this game is still living on relatively strong in 2012.
Unfortunately, the modding community has managed to self-destruct due to overinflated egos and mindless bickering between big heads, but the amount of mods for this game is another reason why it's lived on for so long. If the core code wasn't locked around 2004 or so, we might have seen double the mods that we see today, but for having only four sets of physics to work with, I don't think many of us can complain about the quantity of mods available.
Anyway, the game is now aging, as we can all see. iRacing is a superior game in all aspects, but the fact that it's so expensive and exclusive in many ways is going to keep NR2003 afloat for a few more years at least. And, with the fact that developers seem to be shying away from PC-based simulations and flocking to gimmicky arcade console games, the next big all-inclusive NASCAR simulation might be a couple of years on the horizon.

^ This. And as amazing as the game is now, imagine what it would be like if Papyrus were to have been allowed to develop it for another 10 years after 2003! Or is that basically what iRacing is?navycook75 wrote:may be 9 years old, but NR2003 is the best.

The way I like to think of it is NR2003 is like the Chuck Berry of racing games. It was the first of its kind and was the kind of stepping stone to iRacing.
Like Berry to rock and roll, NR2003 will always be the top dog, but that doesn't mean that another game can't come along that will be better.

Re: Racing game Throne Poll
The main problem I have with NR2003 is that my wheel doesn't connect properly, how do people with a DFGT get around the soft slight dead-spot in the middle of the wheel?

Re: Racing game Throne Poll
Honestly, I think that iRacing is the best one out there for a couple of reasons. First off I love the fact that they put the effort into laser scanning the tracks so they can be as real as they can be. The physics for most of the cars are as good as it gets. For example, The Dallara indycar. If I'm not mistaken, they got all the physics info from Dallara themselves which in my opinion makes it the best car in the sim and lastly, The graphics are unbelievable.

It's a shame about the cost. I think that Assetto Corsa could take the thrown-DX11, laser scanned tracks, and if it's anything like NK Pro-Physics. It also has AI, a first for Kunos.

Unless the apocalypse comes in December and takes us all out, there will be. You can't honestly tell me that a PC game from 2003 is going to hold it's position on it's pedestal until the sun burns out and takes everything with it, because it's not going to. As long as technology continues to progress, there will be a better game, although maybe later than sooner.
As for my view on things, I'm sure some of you will mark me insane for saying this, but I think the NASCAR The Game series will eventually produce a better game. It might be far on down the road, but the people working on that game are some of the most dedicated, interactive developers I've ever seen, and if they keep improving every year, I know they can make a great product. Once they get around to a PC release (which they've stated they're interested in), I think the series will take off.
