- Post-Race Press Release:
- Fochesato Intentionally Caused Crash at Talladega; Torgeson "The Wrong Target"
May 7, 2017
Vincenzo Fochesato's sudden maneuver to the outside of turn 4 that put then-race-leader Joey Torgeson into the wall at Talladega was no accident, as revealed by the #87 team's radio communications from lap 109. Torgeson, however, was not the intended target.
With only 15 laps to go in the 123-lap race and with one green-flag pit stop yet to be made, Torgeson's #65 Tonare was well clear of the remainder of the field, including the other cars who had not pitted. But while trying to put Fochesato's damaged #87 Dodge a fourth lap down, Fochesato recklessly swerved to his right and put both cars hard into the wall.
The source of Fochesato's initial damage had been a crash on lap 40, in which his teammate Carson Lambert abruptly moved down the track moments after the field had taken the yellow flag for a separate incident, making contact with car #87 and causing both Fochesato and Daniel Leckliter to spin into the outside wall in Turn 1. Fochesato was running in the third position and had been enjoying a strong start to the race, but the damage sustained in the accident was significant, and his car would be well off the pace once the race resumed.
For the most part, the Italian racer had remained silent over the radio after the incident up until lap 109. Following his crash with Torgeson, however, he exclaimed to his crew, "Two can play at this game, Carson."
Upon being informed by his spotter that Fochesato had in fact wrecked an entirely different car, Fochesato replied, "I don't care if he's the boss's kid. If that spoon-fed punk thinks that I'm just gonna let him- wait what did you say?"
Further exchanges between driver and spotter confirmed that Fochesato had indeed mistaken Torgeson's car for Lambert's. Both Torgeson and Lambert were sporting black and red liveries, which likely contributed to Fochesato mistaking one car for the other.
No members of the press were able to locate Fochesato following the race, as he had quickly fled the grounds of the speedway shortly after climbing out of his battered race car.
The victory would go to Bryce Tanner in a stunning upset from the young Johnson Racing driver. Torgeson would finish the race ranked eighth and, ironically, one place behind Carson Lambert. Fochesato retired following his failed revenge attempt, ranked seventeenth.
