- Post-Race Press Release:
- Fochesato Achieves Career-Best PCC Cup Series Result at Road America
April 30, 2017
Vincenzo Fochesato leads over Sapphire Anderson, Denny Adams, and Sam Burkhart in the opening laps of the Round of Wisconsin.
Lambert Motorsports was an unexpected and late addition to the roster of full-time teams for 2017 PCC Cup Series season. And Vincenzo Fochesato was an unexpected and even later addition to the roster of full-time drivers. But the pairing managed to produce a strong run together in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin this afternoon, resulting in a career-best 7th-place result for the young Venetian racer.
While team-owner and PCC veteran Andy Lambert nearly stole the victory - taking the checkered flag mere seconds after the fuel-depleted car of Duncan Cobb had crawled across the finish line to win the race - Fochesato appeared to have one of the fastest cars of the day. A clean lap in qualifying gave the rookie the pole position by 0.143 seconds over New Zealand's Sapphire Anderson, and while Anderson would lead to the end of the first lap, Fochesato reclaimed it a few corners later and went on to lead 15 of the race's 47 laps.
His race wouldn't be without adversity, however. Fochesato made a costly error while exiting the pits during the first cycle of green flag pit stops, driving into the wall at pit exit after seemingly not expecting one to be there. The damage inflicted upon the right side of his Dodge Challenger was minimal, but enough to hamper its top speed down Road America's long straightaways for the remainder of the race.
Fortune swung his way, however, when the final caution came with 19 laps to go. The timing of the restart resulted in a fuel mileage race to the finish, and while many of the leaders had to pit again and others ran out of fuel on the track, car #87 was one of the few that managed to make it all the way to the end, running empty just as it overtook car #20 of Nikki Contey and crossing the line in seventh.
It's an effort that was sorely needed for the #87 team and for Lambert Motorsports as a whole. Fochesato originally planned to race full-time for his family team in the Trucks Series this year, and was only assigned to drive Lambert's third full-time car after Zach Meyer was injured in a civilian motorcycle accident late in the off-season. His first three races of the year all resulted in DNFs, and a potential podium run at New York Autoring was undone by a backfired strategy call that left him a lap down as one of the fastest cars on the track. James Beverley hasn't seen much in the way of luck, either (the aforementioned final caution from today's race was a result of his car being turned hard into the tire barriers and nearly overturned in the process). However, today's top 10 finishes from both Lambert and Fochesato were enough to finally lift the team out of the relegation zone for the first time since the Round of Australia.
Fochesato could not be located for comment at the time of this report. He reportedly left the track upon climbing out of his car in search of somewhere to buy an ice cream cone.
