Re: RROL NOMAD
- Olenick 'Fed Up' With Lack of Pace:
- BELTSVILLE, MD - Speaking to beat reporters after a 27th-place finish, Jess Olenick admitted that the relative lack of pace her #23CT Saar has shown in the 2020 NOMAD season has been "frustrating".
"It's getting to the point where I'm seriously questioning what we're even doing here. We're not competitive, and we have had over a year to develop our cars. I'm fed up, to be honest. Something has to change, whether that's on the team's end with the Saar deal or on mine."
It is unknown what Olenick is referring to by "her end", but speculation in the garage is that she is looking elsewhere for a ride in 2021, possibly not in the RROL.

- Info:
- So far, locked in due to their wins: Mike Falls, Frank Azzaretto, Charlie Burroughs, Jeff Wilkens, and Mercedes Diaz. With up to two new winners coming from the Scarborough 50/50, at least 5 drivers will make the Knockout Cup based on points. Currently holding those remaining positions are Herbie Beetle with 6 points, Matt A'dore with 5 points, Jonathan Cox, Cris Cole, Chip Pasteur, and Lukas Fabian with 4 points each. B. J. Brozembek is tied with Tip Dover for 12th in the point standings with 3 points yet is ahead in a tie breaker that goes from points->wins->laps lead (green flag only)->average finish. Brozembek's average finish so far in 2020 is 9.6 while Tip Dover is at 13.8. Everyone is still in contention for a Knockout Cup position; however, Clay Cooper, Nathan Ormond, and Jessica Olenick will only qualify with a finish of 2nd or better. Zachary Fitzwater technically has the same odds, but is not scheduled to race at Beech Ridge.

This is actually incorrect - I apologize. The next round serves as the final race of the preliminary round (qualification period) - which sets the grid for the Knockout Cup.
With that said, the next round's race, the Live Free or Die 100 at the Magic Mile is open for one-off entries. Reach out to me or post here if you want to enter.

- RROL acknowledges significant flaw with NOMAD point system:
I realize now, with this point system in place for some time, there isn't much sense in taking points away from drivers in a race when a driver making their first start always starts with zero. I've really dropped the ball there and it is ultimately an unfair system. When I created this system, I really hadn't thought of one-offs or part-time entries; obviously that was a big oversight on my part. For those of you negatively impacted by this, I am sorry.
I would like to say that I will change this in the future, but I don't really know what the future holds for me. For now, my objective with this project is to finish this season.
Lukas Fabian in Need of a Ride
Lukas Fabian qualified for the RROL Knockout Cup on the strength of being very fast in his limited time in the RROL series. In doing so, Fabian snagged a spot for the RROLs prestigious knockout cup.
However, Fabian currently does not have a ride lined up for any race aside from the Dover season finale that makes up the RROL playoffs. He and his 35 number would need a ride for the other 4 knockout cup races
As such, Fabian is in need of a ride, or else he may not be able to contest the knockout cup.
When asked about his dilemma, Fabian simply stated
"I'll take a ride from anyone who would be willing to offer. Needing a ride for the knockout cup is a problem I never envisioned I would face at the start of this season. But, beggars can't be choosers I guess, so who knows if anything will come up at all."
The one benefactor behind Fabian is the rather strong backing from Duracell he has, as they have been impressed by him in his few starts this season. As such, money shouldn't be an issue, at least for the time being.
Will any team offer Fabian a ride?

Lukas Fabian to contend every RROL Knockout Cup race as a second car on the Reach Motorsports with Forkner Performance for every race minus Dover
Fabian will hop back in the Carolina Concord Team car for the season finale
Fabian will still pilot the 35 Duracell car, just driving a Forkner as opposed to a Saar

BREAKING: NOMAD race at Hartford cancelled, stadium will be used for vaccine distribution
The upcoming NOMAD race at Hartford Stadium has been cancelled on late notice as the facility will be used for vaccine distribution as a response to the ongoing global pandemic.
An RROL spokesman delivered a statement outside the arena, formerly used for the Hartford Whalers professional hockey team.
“With the gravity of the situation at hand, we are happy to support the vaccine distribution efforts.”
“The stadium owners were very open about their desire to help local officials with this process and we will not stand in their way.”
Asked about a replacement date and/or track, the spokesperson stated: “There is nothing to announce at this time, but we will proceed with the next race at Thompson Speedway [Motorsports Park] which will conclude the quarterfinal round of the Knockout Cup and serve as Round 9.”

Nathan Ormond: surprise championship contender? written by Scott Bigsby
MILLVILLE, NJ. — On the eve of the 11th race of the 2020 NOMAD season, at New Jersey Motorsports Park, there are only 8 drivers still eligible for the overall points championship. The biggest surprise amongst that group has to be Nathan Ormond.
Mike Falls, Frank Azzaretto, and Jeff Wilkens were the strongest drivers in the series inaugural 2019 season... and they've returned in 2020 with similar form. Charlie Burroughs has jumped into 2020 from a running start with his successful part-time campaign in 2019 and the same can be said for Herbie Beetle.
Nathan Ormond on the other hand, had a very hit or miss 2019 season, 5 top-10s but also 5 finishes of worse than 20th with 14 laps lead and 2 DNFs.
5 races into the 2020 season and it looked like Ormond was headed for a sophomore slump — tied for 31st with -2 points. Ormond did pick up his first top-10 of the season in the 5th race at Burlington Raceway, but the next round (at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway) is when/where his season really started to take off. Ormond lead 63 laps enroute to winning one of the Scarborough 50/50 races. He would then struggle at Loudon and Lime Rock finishing 25th and 33rd, before back to back wins at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park and Ocean State Speedway.
Now, he's tied for 4th with 26 points, only 7 behind leader Charlie Burroughs. And through all of this, Ormond has also punched his ticket into the final four of the Knockout Cup tournament, giving himself a chance to pull off the double. This scenario looked very unlikely after the first 5 races of the season. Say what you will about this point system, but it has allowed for a miraculous season turnaround for Nathan Ormond.
Other than the drivers already mentioned, Mercedes Diaz and Cris Cole are also still in the championship hunt, but the odds are against them with 11 points each. They sit 22 points behind the leader and need to win, have a negative result for Charlie Burroughs, a neutral result or worse for Mike Falls, along with Herbie Beetle finishing 3rd or worse, as well as Frank Azzaretto and Nathan Ormond 2nd or worse. One of the two will definitely be eliminated because they both cannot go on to win the race. Jeff Wilkens' situation is hardly any better being only 1 point ahead of these two.
Regardless, for Diaz and Cole, this has been a good season so far. Diaz missed 4 races after suspension due to erratic behavior at the season opener, but won on her return at Burlington and has had competitive race speed ever since. She has only 1 negative result on the season.
Cris Cole is known for having high expectations, and while it may not live up to what he wanted to achieve this season, 5 top-10s, a pole, and 67 laps lead with only 1 DNF is certainly respectable. Especially compared to his 2019 season where he had only 1 top-10, a pole, and 6 laps lead with 1 DNF.
How does it unfold from here? Tune in at New Jersey Motorsports Park for the next chapter.

Re: RROL NOMAD
Battle for Rookie of the Year
One of the awards up for grabs at the end of the season is rookie of the year. This award has not received as much coverage as the others throughout the season; but better late than never, here's a quick write up of who's in play for this award going into the season finale at Dover.
Leading the battle right now is Lukas Fabian with 6 points. After making his series debut in the finale last season, Fabian was originally only going to run 4 races this season. He finished 2nd in the season opener, had a solid showing in an appearance for Klein Racing, LLC at Beltsville, and scored another top-10 at New Hampshire. His performance in the first half of the season was good enough for Fabian to qualify for the Knockout Cup. He would then strike a deal with the Reach Motors with Forkner Performance team, who ensured that he would appear in every race while he was still in the Knockout Cup. Fabian did well enough to make the first cut, but did not advance to the final 4. The youngster from South Carolina sits 13th in the overall point standings. Winning rookie of the year is likely the resume boost he is looking for.
Next in the rookie battle is a tie between Oswald Stane and Freya Mast, who sit 19th and 20th in the overall points with 4 points each. Stane is his father's prodigy and while inconsistent has had some strong showings this season. Martinsville and Beech Ridge come to mind, but his best showing was in the most recent race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Perhaps Stane could carry his momentum into the season finale. Freya Mast is a self-made hands-on owner-driver who, unfortunately, seems to get more attention for her "lowlights" rather than her highlights. But her numbers are actually pretty solid. She has only finished outside the top-20 twice this season and both were caused by issues out of her control (flat tire at Middle Georgia and engine issues at NJMP). In addition, Mast has managed 3 top-10s this season, so it's fair to say she has flown under the radar.
For both Stane and Mast, they'll need a podium finish to give themselves a realistic chance of taking rookie of the year honors away from Lukas Fabian.
Riley Kent is also in contention with 2 points, which would require her to finish 2nd or better in order to have a chance. Kitty Galore can position herself to take rookie of the year honors by running 2nd or better (and leading at least 8 laps if she finishes in 2nd). Dale M, and Maxwell Caulden are also in contention but essentially have to win the race for a chance here.
Kyle Pike is technically a ROTY contender as well, but he is not entered in this race. Sheniquah Barnes has chosen to retain her ROTY eligibility for next season - this is available to her because she will have made less than 4 starts prior to the start of the 2021 season.

Echoes of NOMAD debut in 2020 season finale
Another intense down-to-the-wire NOMAD championship battle has concluded; but this time, the way it unfolded was reminiscent of the series' debut. Suddenly, when the race looked decidedly over, fuel came to mind.
It started with race leader Alex LaRosa hitting pit road with 6 laps to go. Nathan Ormond, who had an incredible run of form in the latter half of the season, was gifted the lead of the race after fierce competition with Jessica Olenick and Jonathan Cox to take what was then the 2nd position.
For Ormond, this is exactly what he needed. Winning the race would give him the best chance at the title. The laps ticked away and others dropped out of the running, forced to pit.
Herbie Beetle's championship bid would officially end with whispers of fuel left in the gas tank. Beetle had fought hard all race long but struggled to make his way through the field. His valiant effort was to no avail on this race day. Lawrence Allen and B. J. Brozembek would also need to pit in the closing laps. Allen was in only his second NOMAD race (and not having a particularly good race). Brozembek was running 13th in the final race of a season which he marked with consistency.
Then Jerry Richson took to the apron for pit road. Richson lead a race high 33 laps (his only laps lead in 2020) and had by far his best run of the season. Needless to say, having to give up a top-10 was disappointing.
Nathan Ormond had done everything realistically possible to make it to the finish when his #95 machine began sputtering down the back straight with only 2 laps remaining. Ormond was left with no choice but to refuel to finish the race. Jonathan Cox's pass around Jessica Olenick couldn't have been timed any better because he ended up becoming the leader of the race almost immediately afterward due to Ormond needing to pit. Cox would hold on for his first career win in a race that ended in dramatic fashion.
Even after the race, cars ran out of fuel on the cool down lap. This included Frank Azzaretto and Mike Falls, who have had what many consider to be a rivalry that is full of respect. Azzaretto and Falls never resorted to dirty tactics in their many battles with each other. There was never a war of words in the media either. Both drivers have been admired as class-act level on and off the racetrack. In the end, Falls bested Azzaretto for the title again, but again it was a terrific ride. Thanks to both drivers and their teams for making the championship battle worth watching!
