NASCAR at Sonoma
The Cup Series is back in action for the first road course race of the season at wine country in northern California. Carl Edwards won last year's race. Kurt Busch won a raib-shortened Michigan race for his 2nd win of the year.
The race is Sunday at 3pm.
Entry List coming soon.

Re: NASCAR at Sonoma
You know, I know it's a stupid idea and ridiculous, but I would have loved to see a NASCAR and IndyCar double header here instead of Sonoma being the IndyCar finale.

Re: NASCAR at Sonoma
This will be the first road course race in NASCAR in 13 years (2002 Sonoma being the last) where there are no International drivers in the race. Justin Bell (United Kingdom) attempted 2002 Sonoma race but DNQ'd, his only attempt at a NASCAR race.

I was about to post this in the "Did you know" thread until I saw you posted it here as well.Spannerhead29 (Nelson) wrote:This will be the first road course race in NASCAR in 13 years (2002 Sonoma being the last) where there are no International drivers in the race. Couple of road ringers of note: Boris Said in the 32, Justin Marks in the 34, and Alex Kennedy (KENNEDY!) in the 33. Other than them we've got all the regulars.

Well they brought rain tires, will we need them here? Probably not.

AJ Allmendinger wins the pole. Kurt Busch in second, Matt Kenseth gets 3rd, Kyle Larson is 4th, and Jeff Gordon rounds out the top 5 starters.

Truex did try to rattle his cage there and shove him into the grass. As much as it was unecessary for Ragan to return the favor so soon, Truex didn't need to be that forceful for PNotTheLead so soon in the race.

I don't get why getting shoved into the grass warrants ruining someone's race, personally. There was no damage so what's the harm in just carrying on? Truex was over ambitious but I agree with you, Ragan didn't need to do it.

Guess Ragan just got a bit of karmic retribution though.

My thoughts on the Toyota/Save Mart 350K @ Sonoma:
Thank God for Kyle Busch!
Wow, who'd have ever thought I'd say that?
Most of the race was actually pretty boring, especially between the second and third cautions, when there was literally nothing going on. But, in typical fashion, it got a little crazy at the end after a few of the caution flags, but it was looking like another case of Jimmiewinslol, which I'm already sick of seeing this year. A lot of drivers inspire a wide variety of emotions when they're leading or winning. To me, the only thing Johnson inspires when he's leading is sleep.
Thankfully, that last caution came out when Casey Mears' rear axle decided to snap, and everyone pitted for tires while Johnson stayed out. Of course, we've seen this same song and dance before (Kansas and Dover, anyone?), so I was a bit skeptical about the guys on fresh tires making it up to the front. This time, however, you had a very, VERY hungry Kyle Busch come charging through the pack, and it did not take long for him to swallow Johnson up and take the lead away, and I was actually fist-pumping when he did it.
Of course, he also had to hold off big brother Kurt and Clint Bowyer at the end, and Harvick was charging at the end as well, but Kyle pulls off one helluva run and scores his first win in a year, a very impressive feat considering it was just 4 months ago that he had a shattered leg and foot. Major props go to him, and the crowd responded positively to the win as well. Am I sensing a Kyle Busch face turn?
Final rating for the Toyota/Save Mart 350K @ Sonoma:
In all honesty, it wasn't the barnburner of a race that I was hoping for, and the middle portion of it got really boring, to the point of it being sleep-inducing. But, things did finally get spiced up near the end, and the battle between the Busch brothers and Bowyer was pretty fun to watch. Overall, I'll give this race a 5.5/10. A bit under what I expected, but it got good at the end, and for me, Johnson didn't win, so that's a big plus.
Next week, it's July 4th weekend, and you know what that means...
We're going back to Daytona.

I wonder who NASCAR's refusal to install adequate amounts of SAFER barriers will hurt this time?

I don't mind Kyle winning, Kurt needed one more lap, and sad Allmendinger had problems.

I like AJ.....but I'd rather have him win on an oval to get a Chase spot, a track type that actually matters in the Chase itself. I've said the same for Ambrose and Montoya in the past as well (Not on here of course).navycook75 wrote:I don't mind Kyle winning, Kurt needed one more lap, and sad Allmendinger had problems.

He does have a few top tens (an I think a top five or so) on an oval with his current team, but it's uncommon.BooyakaDragon wrote:I like AJ.....but I'd rather have him win on an oval to get a Chase spot, a track type that actually matters in the Chase itself. Great race to see my first Nascar race live in 16 years, Quite the calm race compared to pass affairs but it was still enjoyable.
Busch wins, It's whatevs but it was a great fight at the end. Fun stuff.
