I find it funny listening to all the fans bitch over Dillon running the 3! Got great enjoyment out of it. But seriously, they are taking it too far. Some fans are even going out to say things along the lines of, "I can't wait to see the car, head first into the turn 4 wall at Daytona, that will show them for bringing the 3 back." And wishing death upon Dillon. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, IT IS A NUMBER!

It was kinda expected from my opinion. But the fans need to pump the brakes and realize it's just a number. Austin Dillon's not the second coming of Dale Sr. It's to honor him and I think it's a good thing.

Even if the Dillons didn't take it, it would of returned eventually.

Besides, the Dillons aren't that terrible, they may not be the next Dale Earnhardt, but they're pretty good.

Whilst it might be famous because of one driver, it shouldn't mean that no one else is allowed to use it. Just curious, has any number ever actually been retired from competition because of a driver's success with it?

Yes, in Modifieds the number 61 is retired after the success of 9 time modified champ Richie Evans, but from what I heard is the drivers wanted the number to be retired.

This was the worst kept secret in the garage for about 2 months. I used to have an issue with the 3 returning since Childress went back on what he said after Sr.'s death about never running it again, but 12 years is more than enough time to change your mind. Plus, I heard he asked the Earnhardt family about the 3 in not just Cup, but in the lower series as well. Scratch whatever I said about Austin Dillon in 2011. He might have his family backing him, but he's going to be a big talent in Cup for years to come. Ty will probably take an RCR ride in '15 or maybe wait another year if he isn't ready.
