TM Universe Tropes
Original Replies:Ceej wrote:So, there's this site called TV Tropes, a wiki featuring articles on almost any TV show, movie, video game, etc. that you can think of, and the thousands of traits (known as "tropes") that apply to them.
I thought it would be fun to go through the site and list which tropes apply to the TM universe. Feel free to list those that apply to your characters, storylines, etc., whether they are serious and/or fun.
- Spoiler:
- Alternate Universe: No real-life racing series exist.
All There in the Manual: The various history threads in most of the TM Universe leagues.
Jumping the Shark: Lance Andrews isn't supposed to win, dammit!
Women Drivers: Averted.
Drives Like Crazy: I recall Marcos Leonard being one of the only drivers to smoke his tires going into the corners at the 2009 ARLA season opener.
Not Allowed to Grow Up: Averted; characters age normally, unlike in most works of fiction.
Willing Suspension of Disbelief: Road races always remain green, even after a 20-car pileup that blocks the track.
-Negative tire wear, anyone?
Too Dumb To Live: Do we need to even ask this question?
What the Hell, Hero?: Characters described as reasonable drivers often make some rather... questionable maneuvers.
-Could be used to describe Hiro Matsushita, interestingly enough, but he was never described as a reasonably qualified driver... and could be used in real life quite frequently...
Genre Launch: The 2006 GRL season.
The Good Guys Always Win: If you're a fan of every single character who has won a race, then this certainly applies.
Camera Abuse: Happens whenever the car carrying an onboard camera rolls over or smashes into another object.
Physics Goof: "...and MARSHALL GOES UP THE WALL!!!"
Acting For Two: The TM and ARLA live broadcasts.
Deus Ex Machina: This has influenced the outcome of more than one race.
Dynamic Entry this happens when (mostly on Road Courses) a driver misses a corner or crashes and gives a innocent driver a surprise.
A Child Shall Lead Them: The hopes of most of the one-off drivers that are entered.
Motor Mouth: Dan Mullen. Also [Cynon] in real life.

Re: TM Universe Tropes
One Degree of Seperation: Kevin Monroe is cousins with Chris Johaanes who is dating Allie Riggs who is Leslie's sister who's mother is Monroe's teammate
Quintessential British Gentleman: Alexander Sybilton was designed around this stereotype.
Sibling Rivalry: Leslie and Allie Riggs in ARLA, Rachel and Alexis Rainsford in the TMMC
Redneck Names: Cletus McGuffie, Billy Bob Childers, Billy Bob Bradburn
Mandatory Unretirement: Alan Foster in 2009
The Russian Suffers Most: Lev Vladimarovich in general, Yevgeny Kuznetzov at HLR in 2011

Re: TM Universe Tropes
Network to the Rescue: Other users picking up a league/series that its original owner no longer runs (and in turn airing recaps on their YouTube channels).
Token Minority: Drivers touted as "the only (insert race/nationality here) driver in the field" or "the first (insert race/nationality here) driver ever to make a race in (insert series name here). Tyrone Stanley and Mike Andrews were examples of this in the canon's earlier years.
(Only Ceej will get this)
Discontinuity Nod: "And her name has ALWAYS been Akira Tsukari. RIGHT???"
Audience Participation: The Daytona fan scheme program from last year.
So Bad, It's Good: The performance of about every driver at the 2010 Texas 500.
Billing Displacement: Alexis Rainsford is arguably the face of TMMC, even despite no longer competing full-time.
Ban On Politics: Political organizations have been a banned sponsor probably ever since EFR started.
Fight Unscene: Postrace scuffles between drivers are (understandably) never seen.
Harmless Villain: Doom-O.
Tempting Fate: "And what a fantastic run driver X is having, he's really kept his nose clea-OH NO A LAPPED CAR JUST WRECKED HIM!!!"
Penny Among Diamonds: Team Burr.
Ramming Always Works: Sometimes played straight, and sometimes subverted completely, when on-track retaliation happens; in the latter case, the one attempting to retaliate gets caught up in the crash him/herself and in extreme cases does more damage to his/her own car than his/her rival's.
Captain Patriotic: Tony Durbin and whoever runs the ASCC.
Big Fun: Reuben Vogt and Tom Delgado.

Ratings Stunt: Hanmore World Championships at Texas
Die or Fly: Leslie Riggs coming back from the Daytona accident.
Refining Resources: When National Racing ran a 6 car team.
Big Bad: Doom-O, "supposedly".
You Have Failed Me: Team owners to underperforming drivers during Silly Season.
Speaking Like Totally Teen: Probably Scott Dalitz and Benji Flynn

Re: TM Universe Tropes
Design-It-Yourself Equipment: Pending approval, users can enter whatever chassis they make into certain races.
Viewers Like You: "Many, many thanks to my supporters, fans and to all the spinoffs, trust me, I appreciate the support -- it keeps me motivated."
Parent Ex Machina: Cody Keaton is such a benefactor of this.
Badass Crew: Most PSI drivers.
You Have Got to Be Kidding Me: Dan Mullen actually said this ON AIR after seeing a stupid move in a TM Lights race.
Selective Enforcement: Certain TMMC drivers believe this takes place in regards to the rules.

Re: TM Universe Tropes
I know this is a massive bump...but I have a few
Dead Star Walking: Applies to the recent deaths of drivers and how the canon isn't really that consistent with the timeline (IE: If Master Cup is only a 1/4 done and ARLA is only halfway done)
What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Formula Overdrive at Texas.
Does this make me look fat?: Reuben Vogt
Breifcase Full of Money: How the Russian ARLA race for 2013 came to be.

Re: TM Universe Tropes
Anyone Can Die: In spades.
Determinator: Several. Leslie Riggs, Tom Delgado, and even Derek Dudding to name a few.
Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Marcos Leonard may be a raving madman, but he's a madman who can drive. His daring maneuvers and insanely hard driving must be seen to believe. It's also heavily implied that if you can penetrate his thick nonsense speak, he's actually a very sensible guy.
The Everyman: Most one-off entries tend to be this.

Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: This happens a lot, usually in between seasons.
Screw the Rules, I Have Money: Big teams, particularly Saar, have been accused of this.

Screw the Money, I have Rules!: When people try to pay drivers or teams off to do something stupid or cover an incident up, usually comes with a punch to the face by a potential payee.
Drives Like Crazy: Too many to count...
Women Drivers: Subverted and Averted at the same time...
Badass Driver: Several legitimate drivers can say that they are this, however, there are those who think they are this... specifically Anthony Griffith...

Skippy Rules: These have appeared in the ARLA code of conduct in the past.

Like You Would Really Do It: Averted in the Hanmore World Championships.
Living With The Villain: When Steve Marshall and Ian Cooper were teammates at what was then National Racing.
Art Evolution: ARLA cars have gone through this over the years, and TMMC less so.
Alphabet News Network: OEN.
