I never really was fan of the guy, but I kinda thought him starting a company of his own while running a mostly one car team in Nascar and running races elsewere while in the current economy was kinda stretching it.

The problem is, if you're sponsoring yourself in NASCAR, you need to be able to race well, because the prize money is what's going to keep you going at that point. Although I'm guessing the lawsuit with ExtenZe didn't help a bit.

I saw this coming at some point. 20-30 years ago, he could of pulled this off reasonably well. Today, you got to have investors, big name sponsors, and some NASCAR talent. That's why Tony Stewart will succeed. He has Office Depot, Burger King, and Mobil 1. He has Gene Haas. The guy had a championship and 33 wins before jumping into the 14 car (granted, it was with a just as good Joe Gibbs team). What does Robby have?!? His own energy drink as a sponsor, pretty much just himself running the team, and only 3 wins, all with RCR.

I'm frankly amazed his team survived as long as it did.

He actually had 2 before joining the 14, in 2002 and 2005. Not trying to seem like a know-it-all, but my OCD was severely acting up. Razz

If the team does change hands via some kind of buyout, it will be the 6th time it has done so.

1986-1992: AK Racing (Alan Kulwicki)
1993-1997: Geoff Bodine Motorsports
1998-first half of 2000: Mattei Motorsports
Mid-2000-2004: Ultra Motorsports
2005-2012: RGM

I never liked Robby, but you never want to see somebody loose their job. Maybe he'll go back to his off-road stuff.

He's just selling the team, meaning no longer owning it. Doesn't mean he won't drive for it anymore.

Not a fan but I do respect his effort to prolong in a multi-car system that requires huge financial backing. he'll most likely hit the roadies and restrictors...i don't see him racing every week if he does indeed continue.

I'd also like to point out that the difference between Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon is that Stewart basically bought out a Hendrick Motorsports B-Team and attached his name to it.

I sure would have never guessed that given their lack of competitiveness prior to the current Stewart-Haas era (at least none that I can remember).

I don't fault him for doing that one bit. Why struggle with a new team and shorten the good years of your career when you can upgrade a decent one into a good one?

^ This ^

It was the smartest thing to do. Get a share of an already established (if mediocre team), get it upgraded, and go out to the track. Smartest thing to do.

If any of the guys in Cup were to want to do this in the future (own their own Cup team), they should follow Tony Stewart's model to a T

Just read on Jayski that Robby Gordon is NOT selling the team, though he is still looking for sponsors and investors.

Someone asked Robby Gordon that same question and his answer was that he felt more satisfied if he built the team up from nothing (or something like that), and that the results would be more satisfying with his own team than if he did it for someone else.

Judging by the number of times he's attempted that (CART and NASCAR), it's believable.

And I respect Robby immensely for that. I just feel like Tony made the better business move. Pride is great, but bills still need to be paid.

...and it's easier to find corporate backing with a champions provisional in your pocket, whether it's needed or not.
