Re: 2016 PCC Cup Series: Race 20: Massachusetts
- Post-Cape Cod:
- Juveno falls just short of 20th place benchmark, loses PCC Cup drive
Just four years prior, Barry Juveno went into the Cleveland Grand Prix with an outside chance of claiming the 2012 PCC Cup Series driver's championship and looked more motivated than ever. This weekend, he walks out of a Massachusetts facility more lost than ever in his career.
Less than four years after that breakthrough campaign, the hot-headed Cleveland driver approaching 30 is unemployed and potentially unsponsored.
Stephans Racing gave him an ultimatum this weekend: finish in the Top 20 or you're out of the 65. He ended up falling one position short in what was revealed to be outdated equipment. Frank Azzaretto came across the line not too many seconds ahead, but Juveno only sounded apathetic over the radio. His crew chief simply asked what we has feeling like on the cool-down lap.
"Knew it. Oh, well. Y'all have fun. That's all I'mma say."
The general air surrounding the situation amongst press and fans seemed light, optimistic of Juveno's return to his longtime team and sponsor. However, he refused to report to his team trailer following the race. He rolled his helmet toward his team at the garage stall, tossing his gloves soon after and exited the track via taxi that reportedly took him to a nearby hotel to collect his belongings. There was no reported communication between Juveno and his team, but Stephens reportedly was offering for him to return next race despite his finish.
Juveno is still mathematically eligible to win the title from 35th place in the standings as of the Massachusetts GP, but Accelerator Motorsports teammates Greg Woodard and Dan Foray are the only two drivers behind him who have yet to be eliminated. Juveno has made all 20 races this season, but the next highest driver to do so is Sapphire Anderson in eighth place. Former teammate Preston Bell is a whole ten places up on him entering Grand Detour.
Where the future takes Juveno is uncertain. Jack Daniel's, who has sponsored Juveno for close to a decade, is reportedly unhappy with his lack of results and was thinking of moving on from sponsoring him beyond this year. Sponsorship woes have continued to plague Stephans Racing throughout 2016 as Chris Benson was let go mid-season in favor of John Jefferson and other drivers who have comprised a "revolving door" piloting the 55 car. Bell has even been rumored to lose his Outback backing, but they already have commitments to Griffith Motorsports' 39 car and Bell has obtained additional sponsorship for next year and beyond. Juveno still races in PCC Lites and Trucks part-time, and perhaps he can focus more extensively on those given where his Cup situation is at right now.

Woodard has quiet finish after being bumped off the track by Bellard
Greg Woodard, the driver of the 41 Woodard Trucking and Freight Lycoia, finished in the top 20 after a string of DNFs. Louis Bellard decided to get his revenge on Woodard from the incident at Road America. Woodard was able to save the car from hitting the wall and continued on to finish the race.
Woodard hopes to finish well in the next races of the season, hoping the team's engine builders can also get their crap together in the reliability department.
