Re: Race 19: Round of New York
- Spoiler:
- Matthews a flop on Broadway:
Ryan Matthews had high hopes for a good run at the Round of New York. It was a short car ride from his Connecticut home, and he had most of his ARLA team and wife Tiffany in attendance.
But like a mediocre Broadway play, so was his performance on the street circuit. He started nearly dead-last, and improved slightly, finishing in a yawn-inducing 16th.
After the race, Matthews didn't mince words about his lackluster effort.
"I sucked, pure and simple," he said. "I've been junk on road courses this season, and this is just the latest example. It's no wonder nobody's been calling me for a ride next year.
"But I've got to give a call to Melanie on her win. I told you guys she's gonna be an amazing talent, and she's been all that and more. If someone doesn't sign her up for next season, it's a damned shame. Hell, I'd put a deal together for her myself. Book that."
Matthews' next two races are at British Columbia and Decatur: two road courses.
"Don't remind me," he said. "Well, if I'm going to race my way out of the series I can't think of a better way to do it. I said I'm probably going to end my Cup career where it started, and it's looking more like that's going to be the case. But don't think I'm going to lay down, either. If I'm going out, I'm going out swinging."

- Spoiler:
- A Tragic Ride, a Drunken Aftermath?:
The Round of New York did not play out in favor of the Xenos Racing crew. Starting towards the rear of the field, Duff could only manage a 13th place showing out of the 21 total, directly behind his teammate Marcos Leonard. However, the interesting story didn't become public until much later into the evening.
"It's one of those stories that just get funnier the more you think about it," Duff said, chuckling slightly at his recollection of the incident. "I met up with a few long-time friends after the race to catch some drinks and entertainment, a typical night in the Big Apple. At some time during the night, a situation erupted between a few locals and a taxi cab driver, all obviously very drunk by this point. When things got out of hand we decided it was time to split, and somehow we ended up getting dragged into the incident and had to defend ourselves to get out of there. Long story short, my friends and I were eventually escorted downtown by a police officer, where there we were able to explain that we were just innocent bystanders that got caught up by chance. They released the 3 of us without charges and the night continued as normal."
