Ragan headed to JR Motorsports? Empty Ragan headed to JR Motorsports?

Post by Guest Thu Dec 29, 2011 2:31 pm

From Jayski:

David Ragan and Cole Whitt are the leading candidates to replace Aric Almirola in JR Motorsports' #88 Nationwide team in 2012, sources said. A decision is expected early next week, around the time Almirola's move to the Sprint Cup Series and Richard Petty Motorsports' #43 Ford should be officially announced.

Looks like Ragan is not going to the 71, if he does go to Nationwide. Maybe Reutimann goes to the 71 now?

Everybody seems to forget COLE WHITT is in there. Whitt is much more talented than Ragan.

Yeah, but Dale Jr. isn't known for making good driver decisions. Mark McFarland, Shane Huffman ring any bells? Only pre-Keselowski driver choice he made that was smart was putting in Robby Gordon in the car for Michigan, and Robby might have won if Dale Jr. didn't decide to spin Edwards ...

I'd take Almirola over Ragan any day, because Almirola actually can do something with a second-rate car, whereas Ragan is hopeless in a first-rate car. Cole Whitt is still a bit of an unknown, but I think it'd be a good risk for JR Motorsports to take.

Almorola was blown out of the water by the #6, #2 and #33 teams and the 88 was a winning team in 2010, so he should have at least been on par with them. Not to mention Ragan has better Nationwide credentials then Almorola. Not to mention that Almorola, was outside the top-10 in nearly half the races he finished in, where as Steinhouse and Sadler were only out of the top ten in about a sixth of the race with equal equipment.

The best equipment went to the 7 and Danica...88 was not a high priority.

JR Motorsports aren't as good as Childress or Roush.

Are you sure, they were pretty stout in 2010.

And it's not like Almorola did much in JGR Equipment a few years ago either.

What about Martin Truex, Jr.? Even though his Cup career has been a disappointment, Truex did win back-to-back Busch championships.

I wouldn't exactly call that a bad driver decision.

I'm quite surprised no S&P Cup effort picked up Ragan, since he's in the All-Star Race by virtue of winning at Daytona. Even with a sucky car, the team could still collect last place prize money.

I think he said he'd rather be in a lower tier than S&P way back when they were originally talking about him not having a ride in 2012.

Are you kidding me? Winning team? As I recall, only time the 88 ever won in 2010 was at Atlanta with Jamie Mcmurray. Otherwise, 2010 (as were the years before) was JGR land. You also forget that 2010 was a huge ride swap fest which included multiple drivers.

Mother of Invention wrote:Not to mention Ragan has better Nationwide credentials then Almorola. Ragan's five years in Nationwide as opposed to Almirola's two (and leaving shortly after your team decides to replace you mid-race not once but twice at the same race) is hardly a comparison. And as stated before, Jr Motorsports has hardly been a winning team no matter who drove their cars after Keseloski left (Save that one win) so "Equal equipment" doesn't really sum up that team.

Ragan's probably going to TRG. That's where he was originally going after he was denied the 43 until this happened.

EDIT: Nevermind, just learned that they aren't running.

Lets not forget JRM doesnt have the best stuff, its kinda sad when they have a direct line to hendrick motorsports and Tuner Motorsports is just a customer of Hendrick and they ran better then them all last year including 3 wins. But I like Cole I hope he does well and this leads to bigger and better things.

You do remember how they got all three of those wins though, right? Sure, two of them involved cars that had the speed but even those had luck, too. Brad would have taken Vegas had the Tire not decided to wipeout and Edwards would have gotten the win if Fuel wasn't an issue. And of course, we all know Reed Sorenson never had a Snowball's chance in hell at winning any race and the only reason Road America went to him was due to poor officiating of NASCAR.

Also, lets not forget that Turner Motorsports is essentially Braun Racing, one of the only Nationwide regular teams that could actually keep up with Cup drivers even before they went to Hendrick.

Most of this is true but the fact that they were in postion to luck out and JRM wasnt shows who was running up front more, I can only think of a few time where i thought the JRM stuff had a good chance of winning and that was at Watkins Glen with Fellows and Road America with Fellows and maybe Daytona in july besides thoes two races they were a 10th-18th place car every race. Now them being basically being Braun didnt help them at all, they scraped all of the old braun cars which was very well known to be old and out dated and they added two new teams with the 30 and 31. I think besides keeping dollar general and great clips as sponsors and Reed and Jason as drivers and Trent Owens as Crew Chief on the 32 everything else was different. I wish Rick Hendrick would of kept his NNS team and not merged it with JRM, I havent seen anything postive come out of it.

This isn't KHI, Cole's gonna get a full season.

Anyway, I'm so glad (as a Junior fan) that he decided to put Cole in the 88 instead of Ragan. Everyone is quick to label Junior as an idiot, but he could have easily plopped Ragan in the car. Unlike most N'wide owners these days, Junior will actually give up-and-coming drivers a chance, instead of putting Cup drivers in to pad stats.

Well I mean over a few seasons. From I remember the most, he drove for KHI, Braun Racing, JGR, RAB Racing, and I think maybe had one race with Roush (unless I got them confused with another Ford team)
