Barber Motorsports Park hosts the Verizon IndyCar Series for the ninth consecutive year!

Opened in 2003, the Birmingham, Alabama circuit is one of the newest purpose-built facilities on the schedule (only Iowa Speedway is newer), and since it first hosted IndyCar racing in 2010, it has become a popular stop for both the drivers and the fans. The facilities are often praised for being aesthetically beautiful, including the Barber Vintage Motorsport Museum and a bridge to it that spans across the racetrack over the exit of turn 8. Various artworks and seating areas for spectators to set up some chairs and enjoy the race can be found throughout the well-kept grounds. The track, itself, designed by Alan Wilson, incorporates a variety of flowing corners and longer straightaways into a compact layout with elevation changes throughout. It has produced some particularly action-packed racing, especially in the past few visits to the circuit.

Last year's running of the event saw Josef Newgarden earn his first win as a Team Penske driver, the first of what would be four race victories on his way to securing the 2017 championship. Newgarden also won the 2015 running as a driver for CFH Racing, and having earned the Verizon P1 Award after yesterday's qualifications, it's looking like he has an excellent chance to become the first driver to win three times at Barber. Will Power, who has also won this race twice, will start on his teammate's outside. The rest of the Firestone Fast Six consisted of Sébastien Bourdais, Ryan Hunter-Reay (yet another two-time Barber winner), James Hinchcliffe, and Scott Dixon.

This race takes place one week after Alexander Rossi scored his third career victory with a flawless drive at Long Beach (in which he took over the points lead in the process). The Honda GP of Alabama may only be the fourth race on the calendar, but Rossi and others have already been trying to assert themselves as championship contenders. Others have not gotten off to the best of starts, and drivers who find themselves behind in the points by virtue of various troubles over the course of the first three events will be looking to make up for lost ground.

Impending severe weather has forced IndyCar to move the drop of the green flag to approximately 3:08 P.M. Eastern, right after coverage begins at 3:00 on NBCSN. The race will be declared official after 90 laps or two hours, whichever comes first.

Hopefully we manage to get all of the racing in, but if we do get to race, then it's going to be in the rain!
