CRL's TV broadcaster picks up rights to World Series of Ding Dong Ditch

Post by crl on Mon Oct 31, 2011 11:45 pm

Seems they'll put anything on television these days, including the most prestigious competition in a children's game that dates back to 19th Century England.

WSBC, known mainly as the American television broadcaster for the Continental Racing League, has purchased, for a whopping $20,000, same-day broadcast rights to the World Series of Ding Dong Ditch, from 2012 to 2015, with rights to broadcast the event live online and on mobile devices.

Ding Dong Ditch is, of course, the game in which children ring the doorbell or knock on the door of houses, running and hiding before the homeowner can answer.

Not just anybody can qualify for the World Series of Ding Dong Ditch, however. The world's six habitable continents hold yearly qualifying competitions, with the five best players from each continent heading to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the World Series every March. The winner of the World Series of Ding Dong Ditch is the player who can evade the most homeowners in five rounds of doorbell ringing and door knocking.

This Week in Sports Television editor Joe Finch did not mince words on his thoughts about this pickup.

"This might be the dumbest event to put on television, ever," Finch said. "It's adults ringing doorbells or knocking on doors, and running off. It's not riveting television, it's childish."

Former CRL winner and current TM Master Cup Series driver Kraig Mummert, and his wife, current CRL driver Jennifer Putnam, weighed in on Twitter.

"I just got thru watching the REAL World Series, the baseball kind. Why the hell would I want to see this?" tweeted Mummert.

"Seriously? There's a world championships for this? What's the matter? Can't play a real sport that requires real athletic skill?" typed Putnam.

Other CRL drivers have been weighing in on Twitter as well. (OOC: Guys, this is where you come in on this thread.)

As for the CRL, it's not leaving WSBC anytime soon. The CRL has a contract with WSBC until 2017. The CRL is WSBC's third-highest-rated sport, behind Major League Baseball and the NHL.

Chris Winter: It's bad enough we have Jersey Shore, but this is just bullshit.

Robert Leckliter: I fell asleep halfway though...

Tom Delgado, Owner of MRD Motorsports: What on earth is Ding Dong Ditch? Do I look like I'm young enough to know what that is? Oh well, whatever makes the network money so that they can give it away in CRL events Razz
