2016 PCC Trucks: Race 5: Mansfield
- Press Releases:
- Will Crawford Dominates to Win 2nd Race of Season
Will Crawford took the second win of his PCC Trucks career after leading all but one of the race's 88 laps. This race took place in half an hour in accordance to PCC Trucks rules.
Crawford qualified third, just sixteen hundredths behind surprise pole-sitter Vinnie Lebouef. On lap 2, Crawford took advantage of a mistake by Lebouef, took the top spot, and never looked back. Crawford was consistently the fastest truck on track, while Isaac Michaels, who finished 2nd, kept it fairly close all race, he was never a true threat to win. Hometown hero AJ Murphy cruised home in third, while pole-sitter Lebouef faded late to fourth place.
This is the second win in the PCC Trucks Series for Cleveland, Ohio-based Cleveland Speed Incorporated, who are currently receiving backing from PCC Cup Series team Johnson Racing. This win moves Crawford into 2nd in points, 2 points behind championship leader Isaac Michaels.
Engine Woes for Points Leader Kensington Jr. End Day Early
Coming into this race, points leader Dale Kensington Jr. had high hopes to continue his surprising championship run, as well as gain experience for the PCC Cup race taking place next week. Unfortunately for Kensington, his weekend would not go as planned.
Kensington Jr. qualified thirteenth, half a second behind pole-sitter Vinnie Lebouef. He worked his way up to 11th place early on, but his truck struggled to keep up with the front runners. Just past the halfway point in the event, Kensington Jr. reported the engine had developed a miss, perhaps explaining why his truck was unable to maintain pace with the leaders. Less than five laps later, smoke began to billow out of the back of the #14 Ichabod's Iced Tea Ford Ranger, and he pulled the truck off, ending his day. He would finish 23rd.
With this finish, Kensington Jr. drops to 5th in the standings, 16 points behind points leader Isaac Michaels. Dale Kensington Jr. will also attempt the PCC Cup Series Round of Mansfield, and is locked into the race based on his points position coming into this race.
Jefferies Maintains Title Challenge
After losing the points lead two races ago to Dale Kensington Jr., Ryan Jefferies stated that all his team needed was a little consistency to keep up the title fight. Jefferies qualified fourth at Mansfield, and by the end of the race found himself only two positions back in sixth place. While unable to challenge his closest points rivals, he found himself in a fight for fifth place for most of the race between his former PCC Cup compatriots Barry Juveno and Andy Lambert. Jefferies would lose out to Juveno, but held off Lambert to claim the sixth spot by the end.
Despite this good finish, Ryan Jefferies lost two positions in the points, falling from 2nd to 4th place. However, he managed to cut his gap to the points lead from 5 to 4 points.
Tough Day for Leskinen
The lone Finn in the field, Matteus Leskinen has been hoping to replicate the result that he produced at Las Vegas to start the season.
He'll have to wait another week for that.
Leskinen qualified 22nd, the slowest of the cars considered "legitimate" entries, and struggled early on. At one point, Leskinen even faced a challenge from Mary Sue for position, but brushed off the #999 after two laps. Leskinen then went a lap down after only seven laps, and it took only fourteen to put him two down. The handling and setup were clearly off on the #79 Varillainen Hydraulic Presses Ford Ranger, but Leskinen opted to keep the truck on track. After going a third lap down on lap 21, the tight condition on the #79 caused the truck to drift in front of the #18 Chevrolet Colorado of Jeff Hanson, who spun out the #79. Leskinen would continue on after drawing the caution. Just 10 laps later, after going an additional lap down, Dale Kensington Jr. had enough of being impeded by the slow Finn and put him into the inside wall, ending his day early.
With this last place finish, Leskinen lost seven positions in the standings, falling from 13th to 20th.
