Qualifying procedure:

- The first qualifying session will lock the fastest 10 cars into the field and set the pole sitter. This will be an open session (running out practice).
- The second qualifying session will lock the next 16 fastest cars into the field. This will be a single-lap session (normal qualifying session).
- The third qualifying session will be an open session to set the remaining 20 cars into the field. This will be another open session.

The reason I'm not setting the grid like I did previously is because NR2003 Save Editor does not like 46 car grids, and the way I set the field at Karjala was really annoying.

Kurt Plissken will run this special scheme (or one very similar!) at Decatur...

Probably this one:

...provided he squeaks onto the grid, that is. It was supposed to debut at the Round of New York City but scheduling issues held up the process. Escape From New York Travel Agency still wanted to be a part of the TM Master Cup series so they worked out a deal to sponsor the #16 car for the season finale at Decatur.

Delgado Embarrassed by Performance So Far

One of the dark horses for the pole when qualifying started, Tom Delgado is still not in the field. The 40-year old Lenard International 3rd driver & reigning ASCC champion has come close, but fallen just short in both qualifying sessions so far. Despite being embarrassed by the number of one-off drivers getting in the field before him, Delgado is intent on using that frustration to propel him into a spot in the race, and a good result to follow.

"As one of the biggest names still not qualified for the race, this is embarrassing for me. I thought it'd be job done and focus on race day by now. These guys at Lenard International are too good to fail, and so am I" Delgado said after Round 2 ended. He did not give us a chance to get another question in as he gently tossed his helmet to one of the Lenard International crew members before quickly running back to his motorhome to presumably have a nap before Round 3.

Relief for Tom Delgado as He Qualifies for Decatur for 2nd Straight Year

Sometimes when you drive angry, you drive with a purpose. That's exactly what happened in 3rd round qualifying, as Tom Delgado topped the charts and secured a spot in the 2014 Round of Decatur. Afterwards, Delgado confirmed what everyone believed was going on: he was driving angry.

"I always have a chip on my shoulder. I always have something to prove, whether it to be to you (the media), the boys and girls in the paddock, or them (the fans). Nobody thinks I'm any good anymore, but thankfully nobody else's opinion matters except mine. I'm still the best in the world on my best day, and now we're gonna get a chance to show that on race day." Delgado said, still looking a bit surly and taking a stern tone with the gathered press. Moments later, when asked about his prospects for the race, Delgado flashed a sly smile.

"We've got a great race day car. Lenard International have really outdone themselves with this one, and I feel I'm going to win. Who better to crash the championship party than the reigning ASCC champion, right?" Delgado said confidently as he showed a little pep in his step by jogging back to the paddock.

Katzev Buying Out Another Entry?

After Yevgeny Kuznetsov failed to qualify for the Round of Decatur in his own #15 car, Katzev Engineering began actively seeking to buy out a car that had made the race. It was suspected that Katzev would have an easy time buying out the #44 Sjöberg Racing entry, as the team was actively using this race to sell off its MA05 cars to prepare for next year. Sjöberg Racing entered cars for Floridian Robert Panko and Swede Erik Bohlender, but with Panko qualifying for his debut, it looked like an easy buyout for the more well-monied Katzev. However, Katzev Engineering team boss Ivan Katzev was turned away from the Sjöberg Racing hauler after a loud exchange with Henrik Sjöberg, nixing all possibility for a buyout.

"Needless to say Robert will not be sitting this race out. Not for people like that, not for anyone... his people bought this car up to race it, and I'm doing my part to help them out." Sjöberg said to local press.

With Sjöberg's #44 car out of the picture, Katzev reportedly began to James Dalton in an attempt to buy out Matt Taylor's seat, as well as Maximum Motorsports, who qualified with Dan Richards, and Team Thunder, who qualified with Bob Stephans. While it isn't known the terms of any of the offers Katzev had made, an unnamed source in the paddock claimed Dalton would only sell if the team ran the Blackbird in the race as well as pay for repairs. The same source claimed that Team Thunder likely made the same demands. If Katzev failed to secure a spot for Kuznetsov in another car, reports are that they would risk angering Carlos Roqueta's sponsors by pulling him out of the race.

Roswell's Last Ride?

The 2014 Round of Decatur may end up being the final race in Dale Roswell's long and storied career -- a career many thought was over after Indianapolis last year. However, the 1989 TM Master Cup series champion kept himself in shape in addition to doing much of Clockwork Racing's testing. A team source indicated that Roswell "insisted" on being entered into the Round of Decatur, and was able to find his own sponsorship for the race.

E.B. Marah Steps Out of Qualified Decatur Car, Davenport to Drive

Edward Baines "E.B." Marah will not be racing the 2014 Round of Decatur despite a stellar qualifying effort from the Cincinnati native. Marah has stepped out of the #75 E.B. Marah and Associates car in favor of Mitchell & Sons regular driver Chris Davenport, who was tabbed to the ride at Marah's request. While several stories of ride buying and driver swapping are often looked down on in the paddock, E.B. Marah presents a unique situation. Marah owns the company that sponsors his efforts, granting him more power to make driver decisions.

"This was a decision that I made myself, and I want to thank the Mitchell & Sons Racing team for understanding that my interest is to see the highest level of performance possible with the budget we put in." Marah said to the press.
"I went up to Thomas [Mitchell] and Randall [Mitchell] and asked them to put Mr. Davenport in my car, because his pace was superior to that of my own in practice over a fuel stint, and I want to give my company the best chance it has of a good result. I'm pleased with my own progress as a driver and with this team, but I'm being realistic with our chances."

Mitchell & Sons Racing acting team boss Randall Mitchell confirmed the driver switch. Since the driver switch took place before the final qualifying session for the race, Davenport will not be demoted to the back of the grid. The car will also carry Davenport's number, 84 as opposed to Marah's number 75. As part of the conditions for the driver swap, E.B. Marah has been granted automatic entry to the Consolation Race as a 24th starter, which he will almost certainly take part in.

Katzev Purchases Maximum Motorsports' Entry, Kuznetsov to Race

While it appeared that Yevgeny Kuznetsov would stunningly miss out on a Decatur start, his team, Katzev Engineering, came to his rescue. After reaching an agreement, Katzev Engineering has purchased the #440 car entered by Maximum Motorsports. Since Maximum Motorsports had no backup car listed, Katzev will race Kuznetsov's car after registering it as the official Maximum Motorsports backup car. Maximum Motorsports's sponsors will appear on Kuznetsov's car as a sign of thanks from Katzev Engineering.

"This was a mutual decision between [Dan Richards] and the team to sell our spot on the grid.  Our team is not in a position to recover from any mistakes that may occur during the race, from our team or otherwise." Maximum Motorsports stated on its Twitter feed.

With these circumstances in mind, it isn't known if they will take part in the Consolation Race, despite being entered as a 25th starter.

Consolation Race Field Set

The Consolation Race will be comprised of the first 19 cars to miss the race, 4 cars drawn at random, and any drivers swapped out of the Round of Decatur. It will not count for points.

  • 07 Anthony Griffith
  • 17 Louis Kingston

Watts Happy with Decatur Qualifying Effort; Opens Up about Recovery Complications

After an absence from TM Master Cup Series competition of about three years, Woody Watts is among this seasons’ entries for the annual finale at Decatur. Watts made his second career start at this track in 2007, scoring his first TMMC Top-10 finish.

“[Decatur] has always been one of my favorite tracks on the schedule,” Watts said, reminiscing with reporters, “I’m confident about what I can do here in a race car.”

When asked about the efforts of his crew, Watts was quick to praise, stating that he “couldn’t be happier” and “we think we have something special here.” He paused for a moment before continuing.

“Actually, it is just really special to even be here today and having this opportunity is a blessing. Everybody on our crew carries their own weight and we’ve been graced by a lot of welcome here in the garage. After coming such a long way it means so much to us.”

Watts was then asked if a comeback served as motivation through rehabilitation. He responded, “Yeah definitely... I mean this is what I love and when I was told I might never race again, my heart sank. I found myself confronted with a new kind of challenge and it stumped me for awhile. I used painkillers heavily and that itself became another issue..... The past three years have been truly some of the most difficult I’ve ever experienced and just to come out alive on the other side as healthy as I can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually is amazing. I’m humbled, grateful, and honored to be here among the world’s best drivers and somehow sorta looking like I know what I’m doing even though I’m here living in the same moment as everyone else.” Woody laughed and smiled, shaking hands with reporters, before preparing to greet fans.
