2016 PCC Trucks: Race 3: Carbondale
- Press Releases:
- Will Crawford Dominates to Win
Will Crawford took the first win of his PCC Trucks career after leading every single one of the race's 68 laps. This race took place in half an hour in accordance to PCC Trucks rules.
Crawford qualified on the pole, half a tenth faster than the 2nd place qualifier Andy Lambert. On the start, Crawford took the top spot and never looked back. Crawford was consistently the fastest truck on track, and was never really challenged by Isaac Michaels, who finished 2nd. Will Crawford was in position to win at Phoenix last week, but blew an engine while leading roughly halfway through the event.
This is the first win in the PCC Trucks Series for Cleveland, Ohio-based Cleveland Speed Incorporated, who are currently receiving backing from PCC Cup Series team Johnson Racing. This win moves Crawford into 6th in points, 9 points behind championship leader Dale Kensington Jr.
Tough Day for Points Leader Jefferies
After starting fourth in today's race at Carbondale, PCC Trucks points leader Ryan Jefferies thought he had a chance to capitalize and extend his points lead over his rivals.
Unfortunately, his truck had other plans.
While running in the top-5 two-thirds of the way through the event, Jefferies reported a vibration coming from the right-rear quarter panel. As the laps counted down, the vibration got progressively worse to the point of Jefferies bringing his car into the pits. His crew then discovered that portions of the right-rear suspension were to the point of breaking. The crew attempted to fix the suspension of the car, but by the time any reasonable progress had been made the race had ended.
Jefferies was credited with a 24th place finish. He lost seven positions in the standings to fall to 8th in points, 11 points behind the championship leader Dale Kensington Jr.
Consistency is Key for Kensington Jr.
If you told Dale Kensington Jr. at the start of the season that he would be leading the points, he would have laughed in your face.
After an eighth place finish today at Carbondale though, no one is laughing. Kensington came into the race 2nd in points, and improved his points position by one as he became the only driver to have top-10s in every event this season. Dale Kensington Jr. started the race in 8th place before falling back to 13th early. After the first caution flew for an incident between John Kirkpatrick and Isaac Michaels, the crew of the 14 truck made a wedge adjustment and Kensington immediately began to pick off trucks one-by-one. By the end of the race, he found himself where he started and in the points lead heading into Nelson Ledges.
Cup Drivers have Mixed Results
Both Barry Juveno and Andy Lambert felt they had room to improve by the end of the 30-minute PCC Trucks event at Carbondale.
Andy Lambert, driving his #34 Z-Line Designs Toyota Tacoma, qualified 2nd but quickly fell back to 5th place by lap 5. Lambert continued to stay put in fifth place until he was involved in the second caution of the race on lap 54. Lambert got together with the damaged truck of Zachary Fitzwater and spun him into the inside wall on the frontstretch, losing two positions in the process. In the last green-flag run to the finish, Lambert was able to make up the two positions he lost, passing Vinnie Lebouef and AJ Murphy to get back into the top-5.
Barry Juveno, on the other hand, had much more work to do. Juveno qualified his #65 Sevin Toyota Tacoma 16th on the grid, finding himself out-qualified by drivers such as Cris de Santa and Zachary Fitzwater. However, Juveno slowly picked off trucks one-by-one and eventually made his way up into the top-10 with just 5 laps to go. Juveno's 10th place finish was his best of the year.
After this race, Lambert moves up into 8th place in points despite not running Las Vegas, while Barry Juveno currently sits 18th in points, also having missed a race.
Bizarre Incident puts John Kirkpatrick on Michaels' Roof
This incident occurred on lap 37, when John Kirkpatrick (3 laps down) got together with 2nd place runner Isaac Michaels coming out of the backstretch kink. Both drivers would go on to finish the race, with Michaels holding onto 2nd place and Kirkpatrick finishing 22nd, six laps down.
