I think we all have our local tracks that we go have a night at the races every so often, go and see potential future stars of Nascar (Or F1 for our lovely Europeans), and maybe have some fun stories from the track.

Haven't been to a local track in years, maybe this year.

but I will share my earliest memory at Stateline Speedway (one of the nearest tracks near me), where my dad won two Street Stock feature races in a row, and that was his only 2 wins at the track. I think that was 1993 or 1994.

Most of you will remember my 2011 Rockford ARLA car that my namesake drove, that car was based off of our championship winning Street Stock from 2002. We only ran about 5-6 races in 2003 before selling the car so my family could move to Florida.

My dad told me that he's working on a Street Stock for a driver at East Bay Raceway, so when I go down there in the summer I might add on to this topic.

There's a small oval called the Lorain Motor Speedway (formerly Lorain County Speedway) but I've never been there.

Nelson Ledges is a track most of you have probably heard about. It's a two mile road course and it's very fast. If someone put some money into it and fixed the pit buildings, repaved the track, and build grandstands it would be great. My dad ran his first race there in the eighties and was a crew chief and reserve driver for a team that gave Boris Said and Peter Cunningham their break in SCCA pro racing. Nelson Ledges once had SCCA Playboy/Escort Cup (now World Challenge), Trans Am, and some lower level open wheel racing, but now, aside from a 24 Hour race held there every year, it only hosts local racing and ALMS teams who want to test on a track that's bumpy like Sebring.

Mid-Ohio and Mansfield are also within a days distance from me (I live in the Western Cleveland Suburbs).

I saw Denny Hamlin win at Langley Speedway many years ago, I think in 1999. Haven't really been to a local track since.

Tracks that I don't really consider local are the bigger NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. I have been to the Texas Motor Speedway for the IndyCar race last year. Had a blast. I've also been to 2 Truck races and 1 Nationwide Race at Gateway Motorsports Park (formerly known as Gateway International Raceway). Watched Ted Musgrave lead all but 1 lap in once race, and sat through rain for another. It's a shame that NASCAR doesn't go there anymore, but I guess there's a USAC Silver Crown Series race that will be held there on June 1st. That should be cool.

Saw Tony Stewart race quarter midgets in a two day event at the Colliseum in Fort Wayne, which is roughly 45 minutes north of where I live. If I remember correctly, it was just a makeshift track and they now hold concerts and play hockey there. The first night he had an engine issue on lap 2 but on the second night, he started 8th and after lap 2, he was in second. He dominated that race and it was pretty cool to watch.

Gas City Speedway is about 2 miles from my house. If some of you don't know, Sprint Week hold an event here, and USAC runs here as well. I've only been to the track a few times, but drivers like J.J. Yeley and Tony Stewart have run here.

Another local track around where I live is Anderson Speedway, which regularly features street stocks and figure 8 races.

Since I go to Sydney Speedway the most I'll track about that.

Been going there since a kid (Dad used to go all the dirt tracks in Sydney when he was a kid/teenager/young adult, shame that Sydney is the only one left) so it natural that I made my racing debut there in 2008 when I was 14 in Junior Sedans. I even won the my first heat race from the pole, but unfortunetly the night was marred with the fatal accident of Sprintcar driver Scott Darley. Notable drivers to have race there:

Nelson Ledges is within 40 minutes of me, but I've only been there a couple times, and never for an actual race.

I've been to Mansfield before for the 2008 Truck race, and I will talk that race up as the best truck race of the last 5 years until something better comes along and rightfully does better than it.

But the real local tracks that I've been to are Barberton Raceway Park and (on a more regular basis) Midvale Speedway. Barberton Raceway Park is a 1/4 mile asphalt oval down by Akron, and has four divisions: Late Models, Sportsman, Pure Stocks, and Hobby Stocks. Also, I've seen quarter-midgets and go-karts there in the past, not sure if they still run them there.

Midvale Speedway is a 3/10 asphalt oval located smack-dab in the center of Tuscarawas County. I've been to a lot more, and do I have stories from there! Whether it be the guy who trashed his Celica into the wall during spectator drags, a tire flying off of a Pure Stock and knocking down one of the advertisement billboards, or the 25-30 car shenanigan-filled Compact races, there's always excitement every week I go there.

Are all circuits I've gone to watch races at in the past as well as visiting Spa, Rockingham and Curborough but nothing was on. I have filmed at the first 6 and continue to do so today, I rely on them as they are making me money.

Best moments at Mallory (some of this is before I had my camera so I didn't capture all of this):
-Massive start line pile up in the Fiesta series taking out 27 of the 40 cars on the grid.
-One of many brilliant races http://www.thunderroadcars.com/mallory_park.html
- In 2012, 2010 and 2009 there has been an Austin on it's roof at Gerards bend.
-Mark Wright going from the back of the field in 2009 to the lead in 4 laps.
-My father being asked by the circuit officials to remove his coat because the drivers were confusing it for a yellow flag in 2009.(Yes this actually happened!)
-Julian Godfrey nearly winning a rallycross event blinded. (Ryan Lawford also rolled his Suzuki at this event. Earlier this year he rather bizarrely hung himself.)
-BRC Rally Day I met in person: Colin Mcrae, Robbie Head, Mike Bewer and Nicky Grist

Near to me there is only Brands Hatch, Wimbledon Stadium and Lydden Hill. Castle Combe, Goodwood, Silverstone, Snetterton and Thruxton are all easy enough for me to get to as well, but to watch motorsport it's more than likely either Brands or Silverstone.

For Brands Hatch, I think the most memorable moment was when I went to see the 2003 London Trophy Cup and the BTCC were there also as a support series (I very clearly remember seeing Colin Turkington's black and green MG on the back of a truck after an accident). Probably the most enjoyment I've had at Brands Hatch, been to see some F3000 and British TCC/F3 there a few other times but the sounds of those CART's were INCREDIBLE. Would like them to return Smile

At Silverstone, I've been a huge amount of times. Between 2002-2005 I went to see Friday practice in the paddock, which I can tell you is a lot more interesting than actually going to watch the race when in the paddock. I was able to meet Coulthard while he was at Mclaren, and I also have a picture with Kimi Raikkonen when he had just started with Sauber somewhere, signed and everything-would imagine it could sell quite nicely. Unfortunately I accidentally told Coulthard "we hate you", which I didn't mean because my English at the time wasn't strong-I had meant I don't support you, but it didn't work out that way. Doesn't help that he's also a good friend of my dad's Embarassed For the past 2 years I've been in paddock with Ferrari which has been absolutely incredible Smile Also have been to see BTCC, with Fabrizio Giovanardi there as well as the fantastic Alfa's Very Happy

Been to Donington once or twice to go watch F3000, and have been a few times to Thruxton for F3 and BTCC. Goodwood festival I went to for a few years, but it isn't really that much of an attraction.

In Italy my local tracks are Franciacorta and Monza, only ever been to Monza to watch the Formula One between 2011-2012 as I've only just bought a flat in Milan there and have never been to Franciacorta other than to drive.

My post was about a dirt track.

I also saw Erin Crocker win a Sprint Car race at a track called Eriez Speedway. Eriez was a track that I think was owned by the same person that owned Stateline Speedway (the track I mentioned in my last post), and as a result, there were 3 championships for a class, the Stateline championship, the Eriez championship, and the Circuit championship, as far back as I remember, only one driver swept all three. My dad's team won the Stateline Championship and the Circuit championship, I think we finished top 10 in the Eriez championship because we only did about three quarters of the season.

Technically my hometrack would be the Seekonk Speedway in Massachusetts, however I never went there. Here in North Carolina, I've been to two local tracks, Concord Speedway (formerly known as Concord Motorsports Park) and Bowman-Gray Stadium.

Concord Speedway is less than 30 minutes from where I live, but there really hasn't been a point to go there since 2007 because the track has gone down the toilet due to poor management. Last season, even their popular 4-cylinder series only had at most 8 cars per race, and the late models were even more pitiful, with sometimes just 6 cars. They even cut the season short and are not running the 1/2 mile at all this year. Their 1/4 mile however, is still running Bandoleros, Legends, and Street Stocks.

I've been to Bowman-Gray Stadium a few times since 2009. The track runs Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Sportsman, Modifieds, and occasionally a special event such as a demolition derby or a train race. From just the few times I've been there, I've seen some fights, revenge wrecking (driving slowly around the track until the target comes by and run him over), and races that have ended due to time limits or curfew (there's a neighborhood within walking distance of the track). I'm hoping to go there again sometime in the near future.

I've been there four times I believe. Qualifying for the 2008 Grand Prix, the whole 2009 Grand Prix, the 2010 historic F1 and the 2011 WSR meeting.

Time for my story

If you haven't figured out yet. Alta is a short name for username of Altamonteric. Altamont is actually a little short track located in Tracy, California (Middle of Northern California pretty much) My uncle uses to race the truck division as well.

Memories i have from the track:

-For whatever reason my uncle made an enemy with a guy name Ron Barber and every race i would go to Barber would spin him out
-Kenny Ross gets landed on by another late model. While under red flag for the same incident...someone doesn't stop for the stopped cars and causes a three car pile-up
-One of the closest finishes occurs in Big Rig Trucks.
-Troy Shirk, Jeff Anthony, and Aaron Days duels in Late Models.
-Kevin Harvick and Michael Waltrip stopped by in October of 2001 and did pretty terrible
-Tony Stewart won a sprint car race in 2004

On a sad note:

Mark Hutto died after hitting the wall head-on avoiding a pile-up (Though he flipped due to not seeing the madness through the smoke and the cars roof being heavily damaged)

Report from that race:

From one of the people in attendance at the track they said, �On the 5th lap of the AC Delco Sportsman Late Model Main Event, #50 Rick Ruzbarsky blew his motor, and there were a lot of cars bunched up trying to avoid it. At Altamont, the 1/4-mile wall separates the track from the 1/2-mile. Occasionally the 1/2-mile cars will slide into it, but nothing ever like this. #22 Mark Hutto went into the infield trying to avoid everything, and went head on into the wall. You can't slow down in the grass, and there were no skid marks on the asphalt between the grass and the wall, so he never slowed down. So, Mark was going pretty close to full speed. When they got to him, he was unconscious and probably already gone. There were a few ambulances and 2 fire trucks and a helicopter came, but they never took him off the track. They said everyone had to leave first. They never announced to the crowd that Hutto had died. They didn't finish the race. #27 Aaron Days and #2 Brock Monroe were racing for the lead when all this happened, but Aaron was 1st when they put out the red, #28 Rusty Buholz was in 3rd.�

Bumping the thread to tell my stories.

I've been to Michigan International once, but that was for a Busch Series race way back in 2004. The only real memory I have from that day is watching Mark Martin finish 2nd to Kyle Busch.

I've been to two short tracks in southern Michigan, the Owosso Speedway, and Dixie Motor Speedway. I don't even remember Owosso, for it was so long ago, but I've been to the 4/10-mile Dixie twice in recent years. However, I didn't really witness anything memorable other than a tow truck towing a wrecked car into another wrecked car in rather silly fashion.

However, my favorite track that I've ever been to is the 1/3-mile Norway Speedway in Iron Mountain, MI, only a few miles from Wisconsin. My dad grew up watching races there from a tree off of turn 2 (billboards currently block that view) when the track was paved with clay. One driver in particular, Gene Coleman, won many races that my dad watched as a kid. Coleman was inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2008. When I went to the track in 2010 on fan day, he let me climb into his late model, the only one I've been in to date. Later that night, I watched him win his B-main! The other B-Main had a photo finish, in which the margin of victory was 4 thousandths of a second! Unfortunately the A-main was rained out, but that was my favorite night at the track.

I found a picture of that late model (the red #119, I made this my 119th post on purpose). If you look at the hood, it also explains my avatar.

I've seen the Norway Speedway on some ASA Midwest Tour Online Updates on YouTube. It does seem like a pretty neat track. That, and the ASA (now ARCA) Midwest Tour always puts on some great racing. Very Happy

Thanks to you bumping this thread, this reminds me that I will be heading to Eldora Speedway tomorrow night to watch the USAC Sprint Car Series, along with the dirt modifieds and street stocks. I heard a couple of weeks ago that the series had an epic finish at Lawrenceburg Speedway, which is in Indiana, near the Ohio and Kentucky stateline. I haven't been there before but I heard it's a really nice facility. Back on topic, I'm hoping to see some exciting racing when I'm down there. I'm sure they'll upload video highlights for tomorrow night, which will be posted here once it's up.

I believe I will be heading to Brands Hatch on May 20th for the DTM and F3 European Championship, hopefully to see Edo Mortara and Lello Marciello claim victory for Italy. Might head there later this year, hopefully for the BTCC Indy round at the end of the season too.

I also forgot to mention that my late grandfather was a flagman at the track when it was clay. My dad would always talk about how he would stand right next to the track while the cars raced by instead of having a flagstand. When we went to see the races on a Friday night in 2005, not long after his passing, they payed tribute to him over the PA. It was pretty cool.

So remember when I mentioned that I was going to Eldora to watch some races? It got cancelled...because of the sleet they got last night and how freezing it's supposed to be tonight (which is below freezing temperatures. Yeah. I'm not a happy camper at the moment. Evil or Very Mad

I had the same problem with a Donington park event earlier this year. They should reschedule it if possible.

Bumping this thread for a reason that many of us usually do not like to hear about.

Unfortunately, Sprint Car driver Josh Burton lost his life doing what he loved. He was racing in the B-Main at Bloomington Speedway, lost control going into turn 1, and started flipping violently. It appeared that he died from his brain bleeding and injuring his neck. Thoughts go out to the Bloomington Speedway community, his friends, and family.

For those who want to know what exactly happened, someone posted a video of it on YouTube. I'm going to hide the video in the spoiler section for obvious reasons.

I've seen much worse Sprint Car wreck than that before and drivers have survived, so that is such a bad thing for something like that to happen, pretty difficult to watch.

It's hard to tell by the video but I think he's helmet came off during the accident, which would account for his injuries.

I don't know his condition but I hope he pulls through. I've seen one Sprintcar death with my eyes before and it's never a pretty site.

Oh, I'm guessing they did that for organ donation, which is good (the organ donating, not the he's dead thing).

After watching the video, it looks like his cockpit got hit by one of the wheels from the blue car whilst they were both flipping. Horrible day.

Off to Mallory tomorrow to film some MG Metro, MG Midgets, Formula Ford, Jaguar Saloons, Citroen 2CV and best of all the Legends UK championships. I just hope they don't repeat any of the massive crashes they have been known to do before. The entire day's racing is shown on Motors TV and I really recommend watching it especially as the 2CV race is just like NASCAR but in slow motion, closer, the finishes don't suck. This weekend, Eldora is hosting the Dream 100 for the dirt late models. This is the first time they're doing a 3-day show for this event. I got to watch the highlights from last night. That first feature race...holy crap! Surprised

Another thing i didn't add on to my earlier post is that Altamont died in 2008. Most thought it due to fans not being interested in the hot weather in Tracy as well as the high winds (Which in turn caused wanning attendance...But according to a website of a former drifter that raced at the track...this is far from the truth.

The K&N Series have their second combination race of the season this week at Iowa, with a 39 car entry list, and no field limit for this race. Among the field are two very impressive female drivers trying to break the record for best points finish for a woman in a NASCAR-sanctioned series. Drive For Diversity driver Mackena Bell sits 11th in points, while Turner Motorsports development driver Kenzie Ruston sits in eighth. The current record is currently held by Danica Patrick for a tenth place finish in the 2012 Nationwide Series season. Ruston has had four top ten finishes in eight races this year, and three of those finishes have been in the top five. Bell has also held her own with a pair top tens which included her only career top five.

There are 2 local short tracks where I live: a paved 1/3 mile oval called Flamboro Speedway and a 3/8 mile dirt oval called Ohsweken Speedway. Ohsweken is where Tony Stewart barrel-rolled on the Monday BEFORE Indianapolis (ironic that he would be injured the next Monday after rolling his car). I was at the Ohsweken race, pretty wild stuff. I like Flamboro even more. One night, in the late model feature race that I was at, the top 3 or 4 drivers all crashed in turn 3 on the last lap. There also used to be another local oval, called Cayuga Speedway, which my grandfather owned for a short period and where my uncle won two straight late model championships in the late 70`s.
