Left field? This one came out of an entirely different ball park. I don't think anyone was expecting Rosberg to retire.

Perhaps this was why Wehrlein was not chosen over Ocon at Force India, very definitely a pre-empted decision

Question is now, who takes that Mercedes seat?

What a dumb decision. Guy could've won multiple more titles for sure. I bet Hamilton had something to do with this...

He made the decision so he could spend more time with his wife and daughter, I think it's actually a very cool decision.

Well, this might bring Pascal Wehrlein to Mercedes for 2017 but holy shit I would have never guessed that Nico Rosberg would be the next retiree

Well, he's got more money than he'll ever need, he wants to spend time with his family, and he has his world title alongside his father, so it's not all that surprising to me.
If that's what he wants, I don't see any problem with it. In fact, I think it's well earned.

I could see it being Wehrlein but at the same time i wouldn't be shocked if it wasn't him. He was heavily rumored for a Sauber driver before the bombshell dropped. (Not sure if motor deal Sauber's trying to get out of it or the rumblings about Mercedes being down on Pascal are true)Milan655 wrote:Perhaps this was why Wehrlein was not chosen over Ocon at Force India, very definitely a pre-empted decision
Anyway wow this come out of absolute no where, dude just inked a 2 year deal so it was even more unexpected.
Nico's 2016 was basically the culmination of his career as well, the dude who started as arguably one of the worst drivers in 2006 in 10 years turned it around and turned into one of the sports names for this time period.
Sucks to see him go, but he's going on top and i bet he couldn't be any happier about it.

I'd like to have seen anyone predict that in the 2016 Motorsports Predictions thread.
Probably the most out-of-nowhere bombshell that I've seen in quite some time, but it's cool to see that Rosberg wasn't afraid to turn away the deal that he had in order to be happy. I hope that he and his family enjoy the time that they deserve together.

I backtrack on this statement a little bit, was Toto Wolff not in contact with Verstappen recently?

No way in hell Red Bull are letting Verstappen go now. Same for Ricciardo, Vettel, Raikkonen, and Alonso.
The reason Ocon was picked for Force India is at least partly down to Wehrlein having a reputation for being difficult to work with. Rosberg himself only made the decision on Monday evening, a day after Abu Dhabi.
Really, Mercedes are in a bit of a crappy situation, especially if they can't pry a driver from another team. The obvious targets, considering all the top drivers are off the table, would be Perez and Bottas, IMO, but I don't see Force India or Williams just letting Mercedes walk all over them even then. Hulkenberg would've been a great shout if he hadn't taken himself off the table completely a couple months ago. Grosjean's rep took a bit of a hit this year considering Gutierrez was troubling him on pace, and after that, they might as well go for Wehrlein, or maybe get Ocon back out of Force India. Problem with them is, neither are at all ready for a Mercedes drive - considering their collision at Abu Dhabi, the fact that Ocon hasn't been completely on fire the way Max Verstappen was when he started, and the fact that Wehrlein is apparently lesser rated.
Not hard to see why they've said they're taking their time with this, then.
