The Sportscar Thread/Rolex 24 2017
This is going to be a big year for the Rolex 24, with a new generation of prototypes, some big names in the field, and new GT cars from Acura, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz.
Here are the big stories that have happened in the offseason:
- Cadillac is replacing Corvette as GM's Endurance program, and there will be three of the new prototypes at Daytona
- Mazda has a really sweet looking new prototype
- The Patron ESM team is back in America, with two cars.
- Acura is returning to top level sportscar racing with Michael Shank Racing. The team has signed Katherine Legge, Jeff Segal, Andy Lally, and Oz Negri for the full season, and the team's enduro drivers include Ryan Hunter Reay and Graham Rahal.
- Lexus is entering the RCF and is apparently actually going to race it this time.
- Rebellion Racing is going to be there with a new Oreca for Sebastien Buemi, Nick Heidfeld, Stephane Sarrazin, and Neel Jani
- Jeff Gordon is unretiring for the second time to drive Wayne Taylor's new Cadillac
- Dirk Werner left BMW to join Porsche, while Laurens Vanthoor is leaving Audi to be his new teammate

2017 is the year to start watching sports cars. It's gonna be lit
Re: The Sportscar Thread/Rolex 24 2017
While essentially retired from NASCAR, Gordon did mention before that he was interested in driving in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future, so this isn't necessarily too surprising but very cool indeed! This will be Gordon's second Rolex 24, and his first since 2007.Alpineopossum wrote:- Jeff Gordon is unretiring for the second time to drive Wayne Taylor's new Cadillac
Also, my favorite IMSA team bringing in Graham Rahal to drive at Daytona? This has me even more excited to see how the new Michael Shank Racing Acura's perform, in addition to remembering how amazing that the race was last year!
The only major disappointment for me is the fact that there won't be a Viper on the grid, as Team Riley Motorsports is now wtih Mercedes. I really hope that Fiat-Chrysler puts that car back into production as soon as possible (whether it is given an auto racing program or not); I'm glad that I was able to watch the #33 score the victory in GTD at Belle Isle last year.

DeltaWing isn't allowed to run IMSA races anymore. The new class setups make it unraceable.

João Barbosa has put the #5 Action Express Racing Cadillac on the pole position for the Rolex 24, setting a lap time of 1:36.903 seconds. For NASCAR fans who are interested, the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac (which will be co-driven by Jeff Gordon) qualified fourth.
James French (driving car #38 for Performance Tech Motorsports) was the highest-qualifying of the Prototype Challenge cars, beating Johnny Mowlem (BAR1 car #26) by nearly one full second.
Joey Hand (#66 Ganassi Ford GT) set the fastest lap in GT Le Mans.
Alessandro Pier Guidi (#51 Spirit of Race Ferrari) topped the boards for the GT Daytona class.

For anyone who has the opportunity to tune in for the finish, I highly advise doing so. With 81 minutes remaining there are three cars are on the lead lap and in contention for the win in Prototype, seven in GT Le Mans (including a Corvette, GTs, Ferraris, and Porsches), and six in GT Daytona. And in all three of those classes there are fierce battles for the lead!

Awesome race, the GT race was captivating .. shame Ferrari used Calado instead of Vilander for the final stint, I think it would have been Ferrari toppling Ford if not

Re: The Sportscar Thread/Rolex 24 2017
A quick rundown of the top finishers in each of the four classes:
A fierce late-race battle for the Prototype (and overall) win ends with Ricky Taylor making contact with Filipe Albuquerque and sending the #5 prototype for a spin with minutes remaining. The #5 quickly got going again and nearly succeeded in chasing down the #10, but Wayne Taylor Racing managed to hold on and win the 24 Hours of Daytona! Rounding out the podium is the #90 VisitFlorida Racing Cadillac.
The Taylor brothers win their first Rolex 24 as drivers, Max Angelelli scores his second win in the race in the final start of his driving career, and as mentioned by Luc, Jeff Gordon joins becomes the fourth person in history to win both the Rolex 24 and the Daytona 500, joining Jamie McMurray, Mario Andretti, and A.J. Foyt.
The #38 car for Performance Tech Motorsports won in Prototype Challenge with a margin of 22 laps after an absolutely dominant showing.
The #66 Ford GT (driven by Dirk Müller) held off a fierce challenge from the #911 Porsche of Patrick Pilet to win in GT Le Mans in the program's second year of competition. The #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari rounds out the podium, barely outrunning the #4 Corvette to do so.
The #28 Alegra Motorsports Porsche of Michael Christensen holds off both the #29 Audi and the #33 Mercedes to take the victory in GT Daytona.

Fun race, the cold weather was an intriguing element to the race and the ending in the sun got really fun. Action Express/Taylor contact was on Action Express...bad cut down caught them out.
Meme Team Xtreme (My nickname for them that i made up about 5 seconds ago cause the Taylor's are funny) with the victory, Good to see those guys get their 1st rolex win (I'm actually surprised it's their first, because i swear that 10 car has won at Daytona before)

The #10 team won the Rolex 24 in 2005, but back then the team was called SunTrust Racing, and was used as the Riley Technologies factory team. Taylor split from Riley in 2007.
