2016 Italian GP Empty 2016 Italian GP

The 2016 F1 season enters the 2/3 point as we head to Monza. There are a few stories to get to Ferrari try to defend their homeland.

We Have a Drivers Championship

After the round of Spa taken by Nico Rosberg, Nico brought teammate Lewis Hamilton's lead to just 9 points with only 7 races to go. It seems that Nico is giving his teammate all he has in trying to win his first ever drivers championship.

McLaren is Coming

The team that seemed to gain the most on the field was McLaren. Even though Fernando Alonso had to start in the back, he was able to bring his Honda powered McLaren to finish well inside the points. McLaren has made several significant gains this season which could lead to the resurrection of the powerful McLaren team.

Is Manor Going to Catch the Midfield?

Besides McLaren, the other team that is noticeably on the rise is the Manor team. Ever since Manor entered F1 in 2010, they have been the laughing stock of F1 along with the 2 fellow teams they entered with that are non-existant in F1 (aka HRT and Caterham). With the recent edition of former F3 champion Esteban Ocon, they seem to be getting serious about putting a competitive car on track.

The Health of Kevin Magnusson

On lap 7 of the Spa GP, Renault driver Kevin Magnusson had a serious accident coming out of Eau Rouge. His Renault got loose, he over corrected, and slammed the tire wall. Kevin came out of the car limping but it was reported that he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Thankfully, Kevin didn't suffer any injuries.

Alonso only finished as high as he did thanks to the chaos of the start which enabled him to start 4th after the red flag. If he hadn't likely the best he would've finished was 10th. I wouldn't expect a decent haul of points at Monza for McLaren unless something similar happens.

Felipe Massa has announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Massa before Alonso, Raikkonen, or Button. Who would've guessed? In all fairness, he has had his share of injuries.

I'm surprised he's lasted this long, to be honest. I wouldn't have touched him with a 10-foot barge pole after his atrocious start to 2012 (he failed to score a point in any of Alonso's wins, and not due to DNFs). While he's stacked up decently against Bottas, I get the feeling that Bottas is one of those drivers that would perform better against a strong teammate. We've seen that with Ricciardo - he's performing better now with Verstappen to push him than he did with Kvyat. Button or Perez should be able to fit that role well... though honestly if I was either driver, with Williams on the downslide, I'd stick with my current drive.

In this case, who could replace Massa? In terms of junior drivers, Alex Lynn has been quite disappointing in GP2 this year, Lance Stroll has improved in F3 but is still not in the same time zone as ready for F1. I remember Marcus Ericsson saying he had something like 3 options for F1 drives in 2017, and Williams might find some use for his Swedish monies. Alternatively, Mercedes could decide to move Pascal Wehrlein up the grid in exchange for an engine discount. And if Button stays in McLaren, that would open the door for Stoffel Vandoorne, who has stated he may well leave McLaren if he doesn't get a race seat with them for 2017.

Scratch the Button to Williams deal, he's going on sabbatical for 2017. Vandoorne gets the promotion he duly deserves

As for the spare Williams seat, on paper it should be a slam dunk for Alex Lynn, but he's been quite disappointing this season. If I were Claire Williams, I'd give Marcus Ericsson a shot - he has money and has been outperforming Nasr this season.

I've heard Button goes to Williams for a retirement tour in 2017, and replaced by Alex Lynn in 2018.
Well this ain't happening. McLaren announce Stoffol Vandorrne to replace Button in 2017, but Button will stick with the team and I guess a Senior Adviser role of sorts. Some suggestions I've read are Button takes a year off, and simply goes back in in 2018 after Alonso retires.

Another suggested rumour (by David Croft) is that Daniel Kyvat could leave Red Bull and replace Massa at Williams.

I don't think any team boss in the world would hire Kvyat at this stage. Certainly nobody in F1.

To be honest i feel a lot of his heat has moved over to Verstappen, and with all the depressing interview as of late, A move i think would be the absolute best for him

Things to take away from Monza: Daniel Ricciardo is unarguably the singlest greatest overtaker to have ever lived (he pulled one hell of a late overtake on Bottas for 5th), and Alonso somehow set fastest lap at Monza in a McLaren-Honda (he switched to a set of super softs with 2 laps left).

The McLaren has been steadily evolving. They're still meh, but it can do a thing or two in the right conditions.

If Nasr is the only brazilian in F1 by 2019, I expect the interest dropping even more than it has in the last few years. Barrichello was the only thing pulling ratings until 2007, then Massa started going well, 2009 with Barrichello achieving Brazil's 100th F1 win was the pinnacle, after that, the interest just went downhill. Despite not liking Massa, he was one of the major reasons I was still pulling myself to follow F1. Hopefully someone can be the fast hue again.

And considering that Helio is getting near the retirement age in IndyCar... it's gonna be lean times for Brazilian racing unless someone can step it up.
