2016 Indianapolis 500
Since 1911, Ray Harroun won the first ever 500 that year. He began a tradition like no other in auto racing at the most famous sports venue of the free world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For over a century, this 2.5-mile rectangular oval has had its fair share of various racing series here at the Brickyard, from open-wheel to stock cars to sports cars to formula one cars, every driver wants one thing at the end of the day: a win at Indianapolis.
This year is the golden race of the greatest spectacle in racing, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. Last year, Juan Pablo Montoya won his 2nd 500 in his 3rd ever start in the race after a thrilling finish. The race is Sunday, May 29th on ABC in the United States.
Numbers for the Indianapolis 500:
187.433: The record-setting average race speed from that awesome race in 2013, which was won by Tony Kanaan.
4: The number the most wins of the famed race all-time, in a three-way tie between, AJ Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser Sr.
6: The number of pole positions that are the most all-time, being held by Rick Mears.
2001: The year that the last time a driver won the 500 in his or her first start, honors held by Helio Castroneves.
202.156: The first ever 200 mph mark at the Brickyard in open-wheel, held by Tom Sneva in 1979 from pole.
237.498: The fastest mph mark in the speedway's history, held by Arie Luyendyk in 1996.
0.043 sec: The closest margin of victory in the 500's history. Al Unser Jr. won over Scott Goodyear.
Entry List TBA.

Re: 2016 Indianapolis 500
Knowing that the Indianapolis 500 is the grandest, most historic, and fastest event in all of auto racing is awesome enough. But to realize that it's the first major automobile race in history to reach the 100th anniversary mark makes it all the more special, and we all get to witness this milestone. It's easy to forget just how recently in world history that cars were introduced.
My grandfather watched the race in it's 33rd and 34th runnings (in 1949 and 1950) live from the speedway, and continues to watch it on television each year. I, however, have only been a fan of IndyCar ("American championship car racing," if you will) for a relatively short time. My first race that I ever saw on TV from start to finish was only in 2011, and it was the 100th anniversary of this very race. That day, of course, we saw the unbelievable finish in which Dan Wheldon won his second Indianapolis 500.
Since then, I've become a big fan of the sport, following the events of every race weekend and even attending a race at Belle Isle in 2014. Perhaps I get overenthusiastic, but I don't think that I have ever anticipated a race more than this!

This is one of the few non F1 races I will watch in its entirety. I have been watching this race since 2003, the winner was Gilles de Ferran and I have been a fan ever since.

First accident of the build up to the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. Spencer Pigot lost control of his car in the middle of turn one, and slammed into the outside wall. Luckily the flaps kept the car on the ground.

Oh, my favorite race of the year and day of the year is quickly approaching. I cannot wait to see the Indycars at the track again. This race is always special to me, but it's even moreso this year due to it being the 100th running. So much history and this event is still going. Beyond excited to watch it. I'll be heading to the track tomorrow and raceday to witness the event.

Hinch on pole. Woah. After where he was last year, this is amazing. Newgarden and Hunter-Reay round out a fun front row.

That whole front row is awesome (Not huge into RHR but will allow it). Hinchcliffe on the pole is such an awesome story and if wasn't obvious he was back it is now.
Fun as hell qualifying sessions over the past 2 days, Probably the most fun i can remember having just watching qualifying.

So that's what the broadcast was referring to when they mentioned Sam Schmidt and his Corvette. What a incredible day that this past Sunday must have been for him.Alta wrote:Also this is a legit cool moment that happened before qualifying.
I intentionally avoided reading up on the happenings of qualifying in order to watch all four hours that I recorded of ABC's coverage from the weekend, and we sure have an appropriately headlining starting lineup for such an historic race. In this instance I am very glad that no more than 33 cars attempted the event, as that saved Tagliani from going home.
I never thought that I would ever get so excited for a qualifying session; I was on the edge of my seat during all four of Hinchcliffe's laps as if I was watching a photo finish! I'm thrilled that he managed to earn the pole, for who he is as a driver as much as his amazing comeback story.

Something about the buildup for this Indianapolis 500 makes me think that there will be a movie or documentary written about it in 20 years...

The 500 is completely sold out, so much so they are lifting the the blackout for Indianapolis.
Might be the biggest crowd (if not up there) for a sporting event in the US (world maybe?)

You what's also crazy about that?
It's the first time ever that the race has been completely sold out.

Re: 2016 Indianapolis 500
That was a spectacular finish in Indy Lights! (Again!) Who would have expected another new record to be set for the closest finish at Indianapolis when the old record was 0.0026 seconds?! I really hope that the car count in that series continues to grow.
On an unrelated note, I found this to be interesting. Here is your guide as to what milk will be presented to the winner in victory lane this year.
It's been an amazing month in Speedway so far, and now it's finally time for the 100th Indianapolis 500. Let's go racing!!!

I guess when you have Sage Karam and Townsend Bell side-by-side, it's not too surprising that one of them crashed.
Bell is being far too aggressive in leaning on other cars for the first half of this race - I don't think this is going to be the last time trouble strikes around him.

LOL
Townsend Bell proving right there why he has no space in IndyCar. No spatial awareness, and hasn't shown any all race. I hope Sage punches that fucker in the face after this is over.

Re: 2016 Indianapolis 500
Alexander Rossi is an Indianapolis 500 champion. A very satisfying 500, fitting for it's 100th running. This race outdoes itself every year.
Somehow I think that Rossi doesn't understand the magnitude of what he's just achieved, either that or it hasn't set in yet. I say this because he was just so collected in victory lane when any other guy would be ecstatic (of course I'm not complaining, I just find that interesting). At any rate, how poetic is it that at the end of last year he was a Formula One reject, but now here he is, having won one of the biggest motor racing events in the world in just his rookie season, in front of a sell-out crowd, on little more than fumes? And to add to that, he didn't just win the Indy 500, he won the 100th Indy 500. The tow truck pulling Rossi around to victory lane ought to be the image of this race. Kudos to Rossi, he's got a big future ahead of him.
Also, Townsend Bell for reject of the race. Caused a collision on pit road, wrecked Sage Karam, caused another collision on pit road that took out Ryan Hunter-Reay, and then almost Lepaged the leaders trying to get his lap back. In general, just drove like an ass all day long.

2016 Indianapolis 500 Review
Where do I even begin with this?
Just the fact that this was the 100th running of the 500 meant that the hype meter was already through the roof. Add to the fact that the last few runnings of the race have been spectacular, and this race sold out, causing the TV blackout over Indianapolis to be lifted, and you have the makings of one helluva show. My only concern was whether or not this race would live up to the gi-normous hype.
Thankfully, it lived up to it and then some.
First off, the fabulous duel between James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay was spectacular. The two traded the lead back and forth more than a dozen times in the first 25 laps of the race. Ultimately, we saw 54 lead changes in this race, 14 shy of the record 68 set in 2013, but still, knowing we had such a competitive race added a nice serving of cheese.
Townsend Bell also looked impressive... early on, that is, until he turned into a massive toolbag during the latter portion of the race, when he wouldn't back off when Sage Karam tried to pass him on the outside, and the pit road schmozzle between himself and his TEAMMATE RHR, and when he was an annoying backmarker when he was laps down. Needless to say, his balls-to-the-wall approach didn't work very well today.
A couple of top contenders fell by the wayside early on, including Juan Pablo Montoya, who lost it all on his own in turn 2, which is pretty surprising, to say the least. Helio was in contention, until contact from J. R. Hildebrande cost him a shot at victory.
In the end, it all came down to fuel mileage, and when Carlos Munoz managed to get out in front of Tony Kanaan, it looked like his race to win. But, shockingly, a rookie by the name of Alexander Rossi, coming to IndyCar by way of Formula 1, somehow managed to stretch the fuel to 36 LAPS and wins the 100th Indianapolis 500 in his first start, which also happens to be his maiden IndyCar Series victory. We didn't see the crazy finish like the Freedom 100 has seen the last three years, but if there's one thing that can replace a photo finish, it's a strategy finish, and not only did we get that, we got what may very well be the biggest upset in the history of the 500. Awesome.
Also gotta feel gutted for Munoz. Finished 2nd for the second time in his career, and you could see the agony on his face afterwards. He really wanted this victory.
Star of the Race: The race itself. Completely lived up to the massive hype. Special mention goes to James Hinchcliffe. Starts on pole, leads quite a few laps and comes home 7th, and after what happened to him last year, this was quite the return to form.
Reject of the Race: Townsend Bell. Already explained above.
FINAL RATING: Easily the best race of the year, IMO, and I expected nothing less. This race deserves nothing less than a perfect 10/10, the third time in the last four years I've given the 500 a perfect score. Awesome stuff, and I'm glad I was here to witness it.
Next up, we head to Detroit for the double-header at Belle Isle.

Woah. That was a fantastic race with a crazy, unexpected winner and finish. Congrats to Rossi and credit to Herta for playing a great strategy. I may have been cheering for Josef or JR to get it done, but I'm really happy for Rossi and that entire team that gained last minute soonsorship and still had blank pit crew uniforms. The Indy 500 is always great and this one was no different. The 100th will be definitely one to remember.

Am I the only one who thought that the Bell/Karam wreck was caused by Karam. Or is my bias against Karam showing again?
All in all, what a 500! I really hope this race kick starts the rebirth of American Open Wheel racing. I hope that this race gets a movie or something made about it, because with all the hype, and all the story-lines coming in, the race handled it perfectly. I already am looking forward to the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500!

That was the best Indy 500 since 1995. Holy shit that race was amazing. I was standing, not sitting, for that whole race.
Townsend Bell needs to retire, because he nearly caused about 5 accidents with his typically erratic driving. He only caused two. Only.

To me it looked like Bell moved up mid-corner and that forced Karam to move off-line and ultimately crash.

Definitely your bias showing. Townsend moved up pretty blatantly, while Karam held his line. Only think you can fault Karam on is maybe not giving enough space, but had it been any of the other drivers in the field, it wouldn't have been a crash.

Absolutely fantastic race that showed 2 very different races in each of the 100 laps. The first 100 laps were slingshot city and RHR and Hinchcliffe going blow for blow, while second 100 were a tad caution filled with strategy becoming the name of the game.
Alexander Rossi! I had him pegged for a tag team but definitely didn't see him winning the thing, Awesome win for the former Manor F1 driver and a great story coming out of the 500.
I also hope this is Townsend Bell's last race, some pretty dangerous driving all day which unsurprisingly bit him in the ass.

Awesome 500 yesterday. Ever since the new chassis came out in 2012, every race at Indianapolis has shown all-time greatness. The 100th though took the icing on the cake. Congrats to Alexander Rossi. I still can't believe he won with very little fuel he has left. Hats off to him and the Herta team on the strategy. As Packer said, a perfect 10/10 indeed.
And Townsend Bell can go fuck off with pleasure. He was a bull in a china shop in more ways than one.
