Tom Delgado (Magus) and I at the race today. Some parts of the grandstands (towards start-finish line and the cheap seats in the 100's) right now decently filled, but quite a few sections down the grandstand look horrific. You can count the amount of people in some sections.

Can't blame Graham for being upset over that one. That might be it for his title hopes now.

Yeah, but YOU NEVER SHOULD TAKE OUT A TITLE CONTENDER! That's a big no-no. Doesn't matter who it is, that's just wrong.

Very mature response from Graham as his title hopes nust got much harder. He should've used his helmet as a weapon.

Someone on twitter had a quote supposedly from RHR saying that Wilson was unconsious and unresponsive. I'm don't know what to make of that.

When was the last time an Indycar driver was injured by a debris strike? I honestly can't think of one in Indycar specifically.

Still have to wonder if closed cockpits, or at least some kind of extended protection is the way to go. I realize something like Jules Bianchis crash in Japan would have ended badly regardless, but the stuff like this, Hinchcliffe, Massa... If something gets pushed to move something like that along

I reallyI hope Justin Wilson is doing okay. I know a bunch of Top Fuel drivers in NHRA have been running those enclosed cockpits for the last 2 years or so. I can see at least Indy Car taking NHRA's idea and start using it down the road.

Now I'm worried about the "unresponsive" thing. If it was a layman's "he's unconscious, so of course he can't respond" that's meaningless, but if its an official diagnosis, it likely means "not even automatic reflexes", which means a significant brain injury. I'm desperately hoping that is not the case.

ABC Supply 500 @ Pocono - IndyCar Empty Re: ABC Supply 500 @ Pocono - IndyCar

Post by PackerMan71 Sun Aug 23, 2015 9:37 pm

My thoughts on the ABC Supply 500 @ Pocono:

Wow.

You wanna talk about a race with a lot of ups and downs, this was it. Over 30 lead changes, the most all-time at Pocono, which, unfortunately, ended under yellow when Gabby Chaves' engine decided to let go with four laps to go. Sucks, but it happens.

The racing, especially on the restarts, was absolutely insane, with one restart seeing cars going SEVEN WIDE. That was the WTF moment of the race right there.

The LOL moment of the race goes to the fox causing the 9th caution, and he had some great leaping skills, that's for sure.

The Reject of the Race was Tristan Vautier, no doubt about it. He made an ambitious move going into turn 3, and ultimately took Graham Rahal out of the race, which certainly hurts his championship hopes, but they aren't completely crushed yet, as he still has a shot at Sonoma, with that race being double points.

Of course, our thoughts and prayers are going out to Justin Wilson, who was hit in the head by a piece of Sage Karam's nose cone when Karam crashed while leading. Hopefully, he'll be able to overcome this.

Final rating for the ABC Supply 500 @ Pocono:

One helluva wacky race, with a lot of ups and downs and great racing. This race gets a 9/10, but it definitely ended on a somber note with Justin Wilson's significant head injury. Like I said, hopefully we'll be seeing good news come out from the hospital, because we've already seen enough driver deaths this year, and quite frankly, I don't want to see anymore.

If something gets pushed to move something like that along

Felipe Massa's accident could not have been prevented. If that was a closed cockpit car I guarantee that spring would have gone right through it and still really messed him up.

The cars already have fenders, if you want to go the closed cockpit route, might as well junk the DW12 and the entire concept of open wheel and just run LMP2 cars instead. Then you might be able to prevent Hinchcliffe's accident. But then those wouldn't be Indycars anymore, and it would be so watered-down in the name of safety that it would be unwatchable -- a route way too many categories of motorsport have already gone too far down, to be brutally honest.

This might be a better option.

Ridiculous thing is those canopies are already built in Indianapolis. No idea why they wouldn't at least consider it.

Also, I'm trying to figure out how exactly canopies are a kneejerk reaction. Unless we're going to ignore Hinchcliffe in the Indy GP last year, or Wheldon, or Helio's near miss in the 2012 500, et al...

IndyCar's shown no interest in at least considering massive safety improvements... Unfortunately, I think a lot of that is a result of how stubborn a majority of the fanbase is so stubbornly against changing tradition (Not naming you specifically). I think they're more comparable to NASCAR fans than the "kneejerkers"... Nobody cared about neck restraints until Dale died.

As far as the LMP2 comparison goes, I would be fine with taking off the wheel pods in exchange for canopies. The wheel pods don't work anyway.

For me, safety always take precedent over tradition, "danger", cheap thrills, etc. "Danger" should be limited to the potential to lose a good result, not your body or life.

I'm curious have they even tested those things in a crash scenario? I see all the talk of closed canopies and yet it feels like nobody's trying to attempt to see if it's plausible with a Formula car/Indycar and are just throwing ideas at the wall when a situation like this happens.

The FiA did these tests in 2011.

Bullshit. The ICONIC chassis, which became the base for the Dallara DW12, was IndyCar's attempt to prevent cars from launching off of one another. That was what killed Dan Wheldon. Ever since, we've seldom seen wrecks like that.

I've seen some rather passive reactions to the Justin Wilson accident by people on social media, and to briefly address those people: Yes, motorsports are dangerous, but as far as we've come in safety you expect less of this kind of thing. It's shocking, and don't try to sell me that it's not.

Still, I don't think anything could have been done in advance to save Justin Wilson. He probably wouldn't even know what hit him. I'd like to believe that closed canopies would be a viable option provided you could make them out of a material durable enough to withstand high speed impacts, but then I remember the kind of accident Simona di Silvestro had in the 2010 Texas race, which Ben cited in one of his Tweets. If the car's on fire you can't waste any time bailing out of the car, and closed canopies would make that more difficult than it already is. That said, I agree with the idea Cooper pointed at -- windshields that don't cover the cockpit.

Despite all that I'm hearing about how good this race was apart from the Justin Wilson incident, I think I was fortunate in a sense that I overslept and missed the entire race. All in all, I'm left with an uneasy feeling that I haven't felt since the death of Jason Leffler or the Kevin Ward, Jr. incident. So godspeed, Justin Wilson.

Still have to wonder if closed cockpits, or at least some kind of extended protection is the way to go.  I realize something like Jules Bianchis crash in Japan would have ended badly regardless, but the stuff like this, Hinchcliffe, Massa... If something gets pushed to move something like that along

Just like when rear engined cars came about... And wings on the car... And then cars made of carbon fiber...

Change happens. 65+ years ago, if you'd tell an Indy fan that the cars were going to change around from what they seen, you'd be looked at as insane. Today, we are used to seeing IndyCars like they are. Simple evolution. Just think it's time to seriously consider something.
